The real potential inherent in a person begins to develop as that lite sets its course. At precisely what minute is the light lit to direct the future minister toward his goal? the researcher toward the atom? Which Mr. Chips will kindle the spark? Which Miss Dove will direct the growing thoughts oi the future surgeon? The Maker has not made man clairvoyant that he may know which simple acts of today will aiiect human aflairs tomorrow. That mother who made a place for the boy Lincoln amid the charcoal oi the hearth could not forsee Gettysburg, but her goodness glows yet in that unaymg episode. Such is the shaping of things to be. And verily the education of youth is the surest foundation of happiness, for each dedicated teacher, or parent. or friend has his place, large or small to his own making, in the timeless movement of destiny. Although a devoted teacher or principal works for a time among youth and moves on to the aid of others. his work accomplished carries on through the ages, never stilled nor ever completely measured. We ieel that Baker High School in the past has made an excellent record in this respect. lt is our hope that every student has received a preparation that will make it possible :lor him to go where he has determined he wishes to go with is life. I would like to express my appreciation to the students. student body oliicers and the student body for an excellent year. Part of the success ot this year has been the result of the training ol the student body oliicers received at the council workshop this last summer. I hope that a strong student body organization will continue to make Baker High sudent body one ot the best in the state. My thanks also go to the faculty tor their support and their cooperation in making this an excellent school year. l. H. ADAMSON Paqe Seven Mr. Willard Barnes Mr. I. H. It took many hours of hard work but the fun and sociability of the evenings made up for it. A special thanks to Mrs. Long, our adviser, who attended all our meetings and helped us over the rough spots and to the sponsors who made our annual possible this year. This year two oi our members attended a workshop in Eugene where they received helpful instruction on editing the annual. Anyone may be a member of the Nugget Staff who is willing to work hard for the publication. Page 'fiiirty-Fox.: M147 Every two weeks the high school paper, The Baker Hi Log, brings the students the latest school events and highlights togeth- er with features, such as B.H.S.'s Best, Girl of the Month, and jokes. This requires many workers who should have at least one year of journalism but who can become staff members if they do outside reporting or work for the publications. Two members attended a workshop at Eugene where they learned many helpful things which they could use to improve the Log. This paper would not be possible without the capable and untiring efforts of Mrs. Long, the adviser. Last spring saw Coach Lane field the strongest track squad that has represented this school in many years. The new high school track is being used this season and an even better squad is developing. Coach Compton's 1955 baseball team took second in the league and accomplished one great ieat: Baker handed State Champion The Dalles their only defeat ol the season. At this time, Compton's Bulldogs are in the thick of a good 1956 baseball season. The 1955-56 football team started out strong but six injuries to starting personnel weakened them tremendously. On Armistice Day, Coach Max Lane's squad tied a strong La Grande team to highlight the season. Co h Steve on's basketball team captured the BMC for the third straight year xt a : Pendleton kept them out ol the state tourney.
