Bnard nf Education HIGH AMONG THE SERVICES that man can render to his fellow men must be ranked the work of School Board members. Theirs is the responsibility by law to establish and maintain an adequate school system so that students and faculty together may part the dark curtain of ignorance, and eliminate the bias and discrimination which have no place in a society of free men. Early in our nation's history it was recognized that our society could not exist without an enlightened citizenry. The job of education was established as a function of the state, and by the states was referred to the local communities where voters elect their rep- resentatives to serve without pay in the vital function of educating the youth. Two-fold is the function of education: to perpetuate our democratic wayof life with the heritage of culture on which it is based: and to train the youth to individual competence for participation in our type of society. To open the door of opportunity for youth is the function and service of the Board of Education. I. H. EVANS E 5 MR. IAMES H. ADAMSON Principal Principals Message THE YEAR 1953-54 IS GONE. Seniors HROUGH THE AMERICAN PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM, we have been trained to encounter our future more intelligently. fThe Class of '54 is expressing sincere gratitude to the community for the opportunity that we have had. under competent faculty and fine facilities, in better adjusting our- selvesl. The Class of '54 is the first class which will complete the three year high school in the new building. The wonderful moments of our school life will remain indefinitely in the memory of every one of us. We are very proud to be graduates of Baker Senior High School. Both in academic and extra-curricular activities the Class of '54 has shown capability for fine achievements. We were the nuclei of various organi- zations and athletic competition. The top event of the year was the class banquet and dance which were held on February 16. Altogether it was a great satisfaction, and it was the direct result of the fine cooperation of every senior. The class of the lilac and of green and silver will continue the struggle for the betterment of ourselves and of our society. We are very confident in meeting our future with our inspiring motto: What we do today is for tomor- row. -By KEN ENG WS---v t 5 -qv , T57 L .-f' 3 K- ' JC 1 if eff , , Q , if , ,I f ' x . f' a-4 .7 '25 ii' 'Q L' -9.- , NCQ- . The football and basketball squads have both won the Blue Mountain Championship. Both teams started the season poorly but managed to win the important games. particularly the La Grande series. The track and baseball seasons, at the time of this writing are still sev- eral weeks away. Under the leadership of such a fine senior class, good teams are also expected in these sports. With every member's cooperation and hard work the I.R.L. managed to raise a sum of money to finance eight delegates and an adviser to the state conference at Eugene in February. This conference was attended by the students from all high schools in Oregon and some foreign exchange students, and it was a great success. In fact, the trip itself was worthwhile. THE PURPOSE of the F.T.A. club is to interest high school students in public school teaching as a vocation. Here the students having a common interest may listen to teachers or other members in the school system and get questions definitely answered on specific subjects. Observation trips this year were taken to E.O.C. and to the Baker grade schools. The club members assisted with the Reading Readiness tests given all first graders, and they took charge of different rooms while teachers were in conferences. Library books were read and outlines placed in scrap bool:s which were kept by each member. Reports were given by the various members on observations and readings. Money was added to the club treasury to pay for the bus to La Grande and to help a senior from Baker High in this club to go on to college next year. This scholarship fee was a new aim for the club.
