To you, who have taught in Washington, Montana, Idaho, and Oregon, sending an infinite number of students into the world better equipped to meet life's obligations because of the sincere and untiring Way in which you helped them with their problems and ambitions. To you, who made possible the Baker High organization of the Future Teachers of America and through your efforts established it as a permanent club of our school. To you, who is past Superintendent of Schools for Baker County, first Mother Advisor of Bakers Rainbow Assembly and very active in many other civic activities. To you, who although teaching for your last year, will al- ways hold a place of honor in our memories. To you, Mrs. Maybelle Romig, teacher and friend, we, the Nugget staff of 1953, proudly dedicate this annual. Hon. Sam Coon Member of Congress MEMBER ia ions omm SAM COON SECOND Disrmcr onrcom Appl-Qpr q C tl Qfnngrvs-5 nf the Qliluiteh States ?5IJ1I5P of llrpreseiitafibw Illnsliingtnn, QB- CK. To MEET AMERICAS NEW RESPONSIBILTY of world lead- ership, each one of us should know, not only the Three R's of reading, writing and arithmetic, but we should also know how to use our hands skillfully, to observe accurately, rea- son Well, express ourselves clearly, and above all to coop- erate with all mankind for a better world. True education means development and cultivation of the mind, the heart and character. Every person has two kinds of education, one which he receives from his schooling and one which he gives himself. Abraham Lincoln had a steady eagerness to learn, and he never ceased to study and educate himself. He would walk many miles to borrow books and legal volumes from his friends. He also read and studied his Bible regularly. After he became President, he once said to a young man, You cannot fail if you resolutely determine that you will not fail, because success does not so much depend cn your sur- roundings as on your self-reliance. Thus, ours is a two-fold task: To perpetuate our Christian American cultural heritage, and to develop each youth to his greatest potential. There is no more vital task, nor one more demanding of the best efforts of every soul in the community. There is no endingg no turning back. From the heritage of our Franklins and Vffashingtons, of our Ieffersons and Lincolns, from our Emersons and Longfel- lows, our Whitneys and Edisons, and from the genius which is America, must rise tomorrow's leaders of free men. To this task we must be dedicated that free men may live free. IAMES R. EVANS. Mr. I. H. Adamson Principal Q .OvJ??!j,!k-'nv, J Principal's essage ANOTHER YEAR PASSES and students move to different fields or different levels of endeavor. lt has been a good year. The past year the Student Council established the first Parent Night which will be held each year to acquaint parents with the school program. A local chapter of the National Honor Society was reorganized alter many years of inactivity. This is an organization which has a limited membership and every student has a sincere desire to become a member. The election of Associated Student Body officers was held in March using a new vot- ing procedure modeled after the Oregon State System. These and the many other routine duties which confront the Student Council have been carried out very efficiently and the Council has had a busy and successful year. Adviser: MR. BIEDERMANN. By earning money through concessions at ball games, dances and an all- school play they were in a good financial condition by the middle of the school year. The prom and banquet, held May 8, were outstanding in originality and decorations. The theme was Under The Seas, with azure blue carried throughout the decorations. The prom, held at the swimming pool, was the first outside prom in the history of Baker High, An assembly held in late spring gave the Iuniors another chance to show their talent and versatility. The Iuniors of 1953 hope to have left many pleasant memories for Baker High. HE CHORAL DEPARTMENT of Baker High School is composed of the Girls' Glee Club and the Choir. The Girls' Glee Club is new in Baker High School this year and is primarily a training ground for fu- ture choir members. The Girls' Glee Club, however, assisted in the Christmas program, the Spring Concert and combined with the choir girls for the festival in La Grande. Much more is expected from this group in years to come. The choir consists of the selected voices of Baker High School who are interested in singing. lt has a membership of sixty. The choir performed for several different occasions this year such as the dedica- tion of the New Revised Edition of the Bible, the Oregon Soil Conservation Association, Christmas Candle- light Program, Spring Program and, of course, entered the festival in La Grande. The cholr planned and executed a one-day trip and performed for visited schools. They hope to make this an annual affair. There are other special groups formed from the choir each year. This year the Girls' Triple Trio has been continued, a male quartet has been formed. also the boys in the choir comprise the Boys' Chorus for special numbers and entered in the festival at La Grande. With continued interest and willingness of students to sing the vocal groups will continue to grow and improve. HE INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC DEPARTMENT of Baker High School consists of the Band. the Orchestra Choir Business Manager Page 31 The High School Band serves not only Baker High, but during the school year it acts as the official band for the community of Baker. This group has played for school plays, and again entered the annual music festival at Eastern Oregon College. Newly formed this year was the Baker High Pep Band. This group. composed of selected players, per- formed at basketball games. Appearing in flashy sweaters and playing a variety of popular tunes. pep songs. and quick-step marches, this organization was well received by the public. 5.1 ,, ,Ji . ff H4 I Q, we A K fi? if gf - IJ!! Our year began with the annual Get-Acquainted Dance registration day. The services of our club really began with football season. These services were sponsoring pep as- semblies, going to all the games, decorating the goal posts. serving refreshments to the teams after games, doing a formation Armistice Day and serving at the football and basketball banquets. During bas- ketball season these services were continued. The season was highlighted by our trip to Hermiston where we performed during half-time. These formations were prepared and produced by our drill captain. Ioyce Cole, who did an excellent ioh with this big responsibility. The trip was an exchange trip with Hermis- ton's Pep Club, visiting us and staying with our Pep Club members. Baseball season our organization at- tended all the games and backed the team in the usual way. I We ended the year with the annual Pep Club and Lettermen picnic at which everyone had loads of fun, Adviser-Mrs. Scroggs. Page 48 i-f I xCln 1 3' :Km 555, 1 lg! -,fi 254' S 3... One of the big proi- ects the Hi-Y and the Tri-Hi-Y have undertaken was the preparation for the pre-legisla- tive conference which was held here on February 2l. 1953. At this conference we elec- ted a Senate Chaplain. Kenny Bond: Senate Clerk. Dean Masterson. La Grande: and two reporters. We had speeches on different phases of legislation and a very good luncheon prepared by our cooks. The two clubs then prepared a bill to present in the Youth Government session held in Salem in April. The Hi-Y club has sponsored the noon movies at the high school which the students have enjoyed very much. The group also sponsored two dances, and a party was held for Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y members in the cafeteria last Ianuary. ESTOS QUE SABEN LO TODO OVEMBER 1952 dates the organizing of what is now known as Estes Que Saben lo Todo club of which the Spanish students of the classes SZ and SS are the charter members. Aside from the drawing up of our constitution, there was little activity that equalled the preparation and performance oi our skit on Pep Night-the big hull fight-remember? Costumes and performance were repeated by request for the Farm Bureau convention. The evening was most enjoyable and the club wishes to take this opportunity to thanlf Mr. Patton and the F.F.A lor the party given at a later date as their kind expression of their appreciation. By this time Christmas spirit descended on the school with great enthusiasm and the holidays found us all at Barbara Proebstel's to a bang up Christmas party featuring many varieties ot Spanish foods in a Spanish set- ting. The object oi our activities this year has been to acquaint the club members with the Spanish customs and culture. This we have enjoyed and we all hope the club will continue to grow and have the success and tun that we have had. Few people realize the many hours ot hard work that go into the organization of a year book such as this, with students working on their own time as no school credit is given for this activity. No credit can be given to any one person. It takes team work, iust as it does in football, basketball, or any other activity.
