Students rounded up their hats and boots, while Disco was outlawed. This year's band of buffaloes appeared in the halls looking more and mere like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Angela Mills and Patricia Hodge threaten to gun it out on Western Day. Students arrived dressed in chaps, hats, boots, and in this case. guns. As winter rolls in, the Baker Country Jam and v estern homecoming doors are only a memory. But who will forget November 21 when the world found out who shot Texas oil man J. R. Ewina? a 3 4 schoa- R M3. PM iNI HT —rr ' l V I Oh Give Me The Dome Where The Buffalo Roam One of the greatest things that happened to our 1980 football team was the game we played in the Superdome. This was an experience that may never come our way again and one the players and coaches will never forget. If you have never had the privilege to see or be in this structure, you have missed a treat. It was an honor to be on the same field where many pros had played, site of a Super Bowl and an NCAA football national championship game. There v as so much excitement. At one point. BHS seemed to be the winner, but tragedy struck, and we were beaten by a field goal. Broadmoor emerged the winner by a score of 9-7. When the game ended and we had lost, spectators still had a good feeling inside — just feeling lucky that we had gotten to play in the Superdome. 5 Homecoming Queen Baker’s 1980-81 homecoming queen was Kim Smith, seventeen-year-old senior. He is the designer, director. and coordinator of the learning environment. It follows then that teacher preparation should inculcate the realization that it is the teacher's responsibility to motivate the student to desire the skills and knowledge necessary to be successful in a learning situation. Therefore, the burden of proof rests with the teacher to work out ways, experiences. and discussions that will build bridges from the things that do seem significant to students, to the things that teachers know that the students actually will need to know and be able to do. It is the teacher's added responsibility to provide a variety of learning methods and activities so that each student can learn and succeed to the limit of his ability and desire. 22 LIN BABB - Health Physical Education CLEVELAND BAILEY English Speech JOSEPH BEZET - Chemistry Physics BLACK Reading CATHY BONDURANT - Algebra 23 lr i HENRY BOUCHER - Distributive Ed. It Requires Sacrifice, Dedication And Self-Denial.” BAKER FOOTBALL 1980 The football season of 1980 was one of the most rewarding for several reasons. First we had a fine group of young men to work with. They had great enthusiasm and were willing to work hard. Secondly, we had an opportunity to play in the Super Dome. This was a first for us and one we shall never forget. We began with a victory over Re-demptorist in our Jamboree. Then we lost to Broadmoor in the Super Dome in the last 26 seconds in a game in which we outplayed them. Next we beat East Ascension soundly in their backyard. Our first home game was with Lee High School, which we defeated without too much trouble. In our first district game we traveled to Boga-lusa, and beat them for the first time in three years. Then came the “Big Game” when we took on Covington at home. This game was played with all the emotion and intensity of any game we played all year. We were defeated in overtime. We had no trouble beating the Hornets.” The Buffs defeated Central by a score of 36 to 6. We came out victorious again against Belaire and Glen Oaks. Because of our successful record, we were invited to play in a post season bowl game against Central LaFouche in Gonzales. We won this ballgame also. If it had not been for the number of injuries that hampered us throughout the season, I‘think we would have made it to the State Playoffs. Corch J.C. Stewart 91 The coaches for the 1980 season: front row-Milton Broussard. J.C. Stewart-head coach, Larry Thomas, Sam Ellis, Earl Langlois, Joe Green, Joe Moock, and Richie Ory. In the Bogalusa game, Bay Tuggle outraced a lumberjack to gain more yardage. The Buffaloes shut out Bogalusa, 17-0. This was Baker’s first win over Bogalusa in four years. Scooter Myers barked out the offensive signals for the Buffs in their 29-8 victory over Scotlandville. Myers also tossed two touchdown passes to Kenny Burton. Richie White takes a much needed break on the bench. 92 L. During the season, Baker defeated Lee High with a score of 21-6. There were two touchdowns in the third period; one was by Cleve Bailey, and the other one was by Richie White. This was Bailey's second touchdown of the game. In the fourth quarter Carl Perot passed a 32-yard pass to Kenny Burton for another first down. The Buffaloes were impressive. Baker compiled 17 first downs to 10 for the Rebels. The Buffs rushed for 279 yards and passed for another 99 to accumulate 378 yards in total offense. 93 Top left-A good defensive tackle by Gerald Coleman helped to keep Glen Oaks from scoring. Middle right-a few of the players have a good time at the pep rally. During the Baker-Glen Oaks game. Baker had six first downs. 100 yards rushing and 44 passing for a total of 144 stripes. The win by Baker enabled the Buffs to finish the regular season with a 7-3 overall mark and 5-2 record in district to clinch third place in 7-AAAA. Bottom right-Troy Nettles springs into action. This year is the first winning season for the buffaloes since the 1976 squad went 10-2. After defeating Glen Oaks. Baker had 99 first downs, 1,719 yards rushing and 460 passing for a total offense of 2.179 yards for an average of 218 yards per game. The Buffs had a very good season all around. 94 Defense is built on a tradition of sacrifice. dedication, and pride. The name of the game is hit. To be a winner on defense you must be a hitter. You must punish the opponent. We have to be mentally ready so as to learn, digest and feel comfortable doing what we will have to do on defense to win. The qualifications to play defense are few. Hit. hustle, have a burning desire not to get blocked, an even greater desire not to stay blocked, and a willingness to pursue and punish a ball carrier. IF YOU BELIEVE. Something seemed to click inside each of them when it came to the nitty-gritty of t producing layouts and articles. Each day they disappeared g through the door of H-22, and they talked in terms of picas and , copy. They cropped and they wrote. They drew and they drew. They hated the word “deadline”. But all in all ... they were f applauded. _ 163 164 165 Fashion Many of the latest fashion items came from different areas of the country. But this year our style came from Texas. 1980 was the year for western clothes. From cowboy hats, to jeans, to boots, many Baker High students were with the times. 166 Local merchants agreed that western clothes were in. What could be more comfortable than a pair of jeans? Whether it be Levis’, Lees, Calvin Klein, Wrangler, Chic or Gloria Vanderbilt ... jeans set the fashion trend. There has also been a lot of interest on shoes. Looks matter, but what they feel like is also important. Converse, Adidas, Nikes, Bass and Candie are just some of the brands seen around Baker. They vary from flat soles, to three inch heels to even clear soles. One thing Is for certain ... Baker High students are on their toes. 167 168 169 Double Trouble You must look at their clothes. If that doesn’t work, try looking at hairstyles. Swallow your pride and call them by name- Sooner or later, you’ll find out who they are-We had our share of twins at Baker High this year- Some looked alike and some you would have never guessed. 170 Myra and Martie Bishop John and Joe Morgan Lori and Laura Lutrick Vincent and Victor Mock David and Carl Dabadie Brent and Brian Berthelot Darryl and Sharryl Rushing Frances and Phyllis Williams George and James Cupit Donald and Ronald Richardson In many respects BHS twins were just like other brothers and sisters. They rode to school together, enjoyed some of the same forms of weekend entertainment. and they often fussed at one another, just ask their parents. 171 The activities which revolve around more than 1,329 students on a campus could be compared to a transit system in a metropolitan area. It was a year of traffic to and from Baker High. Students took part in various activities which scattered them in all corners of the campus and community. 172 6 1 4 s •th Mi 'W' When students at Baker High School start to work they really get involved. They do the best they can, and never quit until the job is done well. Although major subjects are required, students choose electives to suit their interests. Subjects chosen often help students with future plans. These students find their jobs very enjoyable, entertainig. and profitable. For many students, work does not end at school. Myra McCastle and Mary Green were seen working at McDonalds. Mike Mussleman certainly bagged his share of groceries at Winn Dixie. Fred Chappell's happy face graced the new Kroger. Whether in school or community work, Baker High students do their share of work. if: Jxfxfxfx' x{x|x|x4 |_ 4xtxfxfxfx|xfx ?}?}?{?! ttt« xfx jWv Ijtet xfxfx If Mhm xlxfxlxlxixfxf 173 Faces Expressions seemed to vary greatly at Baker High. Moods were detected by looking at facial expression. Moods were created by time, environment, and other stimuli. Some faces seen, really made people wonder- 174 Lunch time was the perfect time to find happy faces. Clowning with friends was a perfect pastime during lunch and between classes. Clowning often did not stop after the tardy bell sounded. When discipline was necessary. teachers changed students moods quite readily. Often times, frowns of frustration were found when teachers gave tests. Among the crowds of tested students. we saw serious looks, bewilderment and some signs of delight for those who studied. Teachers moods also varied from day to day. Coach Nissen went from a P.E. coach to a “deer” person. We uncovered many moods ... but BHS students seemed to survive them all. 175 Current Events 1980-81 was certainly a year to remember- It was a time of reawakened pride and patriotism. On January 20. the U.S. hostages were set free. This event contributed to the fall of Jimmy Carter’s presidency and began Reagan’s presidency with optimism. 176 Whether it be school news, local, state, or national news. Baker High students were in the show. Again Baker High Art students participated in the annual parish art show. Our cheerleaders were selected for the 1981-82 school year- They were: Kay Southall. Melanie Naquin. Tori Taylor, Skipper Courtney. Michelle Wright. Dana Burris. Irma Bell. Toni Marionneaux, and Jena McKenzie. On March 30. 1981. President Reagan was shot by an attempted assassin, John Henckley. Again our patriotism was reawakened. During April, 1981, tf e spacecraft Columbia made a successful launch from a launch pad and a successful land on an air strip. Look around........BHS students are proud of their heritage. Truckers have loads of pride. Some admitted to the fact that they felt a bit “superior because they rode higher than most motorists. 178 We saw more and more truck enthusiasts in the 1980-81 school year. Trucks were easy to customize, and many drivers enjoyed attaching bumper stickers such as “COWBOY CADILLAC . “REDNECK.” “SKOAL. A PINCH IS ALL IT TAKES.” and “PASS WITH CAUTION, DRIVER CHEWING TABACCO.” Weather did not seem to bother these truckers. In fact, many truckers enjoyed “mud riding” when it rained. This year proved the fact that there was a little cowboy in a lot of us. Several truckers enjoyed playing chauffeur to groups heading for the nearest swim hole-No longer were truckers displeased with the attention. They held their heads high. 179 Jack And The Beanstalk Baker High School presented a children’s musical version of Jack and the Beanstalk April 27-May 4 which included a Saturday night performance for the community. The play lasted approximately forty-five minutes long. The members of the cast and Mr. Jones (director), received multitudes of letters, cards, and pictures from students showing their appreciation for the performance. 180 fa'- •r©) gjD)ii.r© Characters: Giant: Karl Pittman, Jack: Scott Moak, Jacks' mother: Susan Muller, Baron: Tim Tillman. Oh well, where’s the scissors? I We have made castles, fountains, south sea islands, and many other things to decorate the theme of the year-but maybe, just maybe, this year will be the best ever and everyone will be satisfied with the look , “the theme. and the music.” Yes. it was a bit of madness, glamour, and loads of work rolled into one- Eight hours of work for just four hours of dance and its all gone ... forgotten. But maybe not, by glancing at these pictures, the best of 1981 can be remembered. 183 184 18S The Last Round-Up I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone's shadow. I learned it's always a good idea to save and it's even a better idea to do it at Capital Savings Association. They have something for everybody—savings certificates, retirement trust accounts and passbook accounts, the way I started. When you get a little older, you realize how important it is to save money. Going to college is one very good reason to put your money to work in a Capital Savings account. In fact, getting the things you want—A college education, a new car. furniture for your own place—can start with a good savings program. So don't let that money sit around (or be spent!) in your pocket.
