The Buff Volume XXXIII 1980 Baker High School 3200 Groom Road Baker, Louisiana Spirit Shines Through Spirit comes to mind when one thinks of Baker High School. Whether it be the band, the classes, or the many different teams and organizations, no one can escape spirit fever. Our band gave spectacular performances at every football game, the classes made signs, and homerooms decorated doors for Homecoming, just to show their spirit. Wherever we go, whatever we do, the spirit of Baker High School shines through us all. 3 Students of Baker High have super-spirit. Pep rallies bring all of the students together to back the teams as one. At each school activity, at home or away, the spirit can’t be ignored. Shouts and signs not to mention students, back the Buffs all of the way! 5 Something To Interest Everyone Starting this year at Baker High School the ninth grade class is required to have at least 22 units to graduate. The added classes include an extra year of English and an extra year of math. Students in the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades only need 20 units to graduate. This year Baker High School has a new time schedule. School starts at 7:50 a.m. and ends at 2:09 p.m. Also, students can only take a maximum of six courses instead of the usual seven. There are approximately 1600 students at Baker, and 75 teachers. The curriculum offered here includes 168 courses, something to interest everyone. 6 7 When You’ve Got The Time With a biology test postponed and a 10 page theme finally completed, a free moment couldn't have come at a better time. Locker breaks and lunch breaks provide a precious moment for relaxing. Favorite gathering spots include the concession stand, the parking lot, and the lunch line. 8 You may not think that there is much to do in your spare time at school, but look around — there’s a little of everything going on. Students do homework, or hum hit songs, and a lot more, but most of all they just hang around! 10 Sports cover a large area of extra curricular activities at Baker. We have many fields in which a person can express his or her talents. The competition level runs high. Instramural sports are also just as competitive and almost everyone participates. The sports offered to boys are football, wrestling, basketball, cross country, track, golf, and basketball. The team sports for girls include volleyball, basketball, which was just added this year, cross country, track, and softball. Tennis is offered to both guys and girls. All athletes put everything they have into their sport. Time Capsule As this decade draws to a close, many changes that occured during these past years are still in our minds. Fashions from the past are coming back again. Gold chains and silks are in as the young ladies bring back the styles of the glamorous 40’s wearing pleated skirts and splits while stepping high in “candies.” The guys have gone back to the “ivy league style”, Peter Pan collared shirts with crew neck sweaters and skinny neckties. Baggy pants and pocket watches finish the wardrobe as they step low in “A1 Capones.” On the serious side, there are events taking place that will affect us all • either now or in the future. Certainly no one will soon forget the Iranian crisis, the gas crunch, and inflation. To top all this off, politics looms larger than usual, with this being an election year. A Republican will take the office of governor of our state for the first time in 100 years. 14 Special Events This years’ special events, such as pep rallys and the yearbook assembly, have been highlighted by many appearances by special guests: Brad Bowman spoke at the yearbook assembly. At one pep rally the Golden Knights, a parachute team, performed, and Baker’s mayor, Mike Cross, spoke at another. The Cheap Shots of WFMF also made an appearance to promote spirit. 16 17 .Captured in the pages of this yearbook are unparalleled memo-1 ries of friends, activities, events, functions, and experiences of the past school year. The yearbook staff and advisors have dedicated | unselfish and tireless hours to preserve these memories for you to enjoy during your entire lifetime. You should feel proud to be a| part of these memories that are permanently recorded in the eighty year history of Baker High School. This record will be I destroyed only by the end of time. ______________ Assistant Principals Top Left: Mr. Richie Bullock. Assistant Principal. Bottom Left: Mr. Larry Thomas. Break Even --------------' Coach’s Comments Most Coaches ore very optomistic at the beginning of each season but by the same token. they are realistic. At the beginning of our football season we were of the opinion we could have a good season. After the first three games we began having all kinds of bad luck. Injuries set in and we lost a number of key players because of this. Kelvin Fisher was lost before the season began because of a knee operation. Roger Thompson, and George Cupit had shoulder problems. Our best running back. Richie White, injured his knee and was out for the season At this point we could have just thrown in the towel but we continued to work and make improvements as the season progressed. We opened the season against Redemp-torist and the jamboree defeating them after a lost to Broadmoor. We defeated East Ascension in a hard faught game for the Mayor's Trophy. Lee High was our next oponent and we beat them in the last minutes on a Thriller”. We began our District schedule with three tough losses to Bogalusa, Covington. and Denham Springs. Although we played well against Bogalusa we just did not play good football at all against Covington Kelvin Robinson was unstopable for Denham Springs. By this time we were very low and our morale had dropped considerably, but we came back to get in the win column against Scotland-ville. The next game was the end of the nine weeks and added to the injuries. We were the dedicated underdogs. We defeated Central at their home field. We closed the season against Gen Oaks which was played in the rain at Memorial Stadium In spite of the sloppy field conditions we came out victorious with a 5 5 record. cl! The 1979 Junior Varsity football team promised future success at the varsity lev as they battled through an undefeated season with superb efforts each we i against strong opposition. The junior Buffaloes defeated Tara in the jamboree v ■■ then defeated ten consecutive opponents on their way to a perfect season. Und. the leadership of coaches Joe Moock and Sam Ellis, the J.V.’s scored 255 poin: while holding the opposition to only 51 points. Six teams were held scoreless by; fierce Buffalo defense that did not yield more than 14 points to any one oppe nent. Coach’s Corner Coaching the 12 youngsters this past season has been real enjoyable. I feel that these youngsters have improved by leaps and bounds since August. When we started practice, 1 felt our fundamentals were weak and that we would have to conquer these necessary skills before we could become a consistent winner. Looking back at the season, I feel we gained a good amount of respect from our opponents. I feel that we have laid down the proper foundation for our program in the future. 1 have to admit, I loved every minute of it. The Baker Buffaloes of 1979-80 dedicated themselves to victory through hard work and a non-stop spirit. One of the goals set was to win 20 games during the season. 'The Buffs hustled up a 21-11 record for the year. They won 12 out of the last 16 games played. At one point it seemed they would suffer defeat, but the guys came back strong. With a little hardwork and practice they are sure to hustle up a win ning season next year. Coach’s Corner The art of wrestling is a sport that dates back to the ancient Olympics. The sport matches a young man’s strength against the strength of his opponent, his courage against his opponent’s courage, and his heart against another’s heart. This year's team showed a great deal of heart during the season. They were very competitive and displayed a lot of courage. In closing, 1 would like to express the thoughts of two of our top wrestlers. One said, “In the beginning, wrestling was hard work, but as the months passed the work turned into pleasure and fun.” The other said, “A wrestler has to believe in himself. He cannot go out on the mat thinking he is going to loose.” Stats And Facts In team victories, we won seven out of twelve dual meets. In the city tournament, we finished in fourth place. In our Regional Division we placed third. We also placed ninth in state. Coach s Corner we experience have to be measured in small terms. Baker is considered to be “Buffalo Country”- not tennis country. Hopefully this will change as the community’s interest in tennis grows. This would give students the opportunity to gain experience in learning tennis at a younger age. This year’s tennis team was relatively young, both in age and experience. 1 hope they will all continue to play the game and return next season with their same enthusiasm and interest in learning better tennis. The 1979-80 tennis team returned this year with varsity players as well as some new faces. With Redemptorist, Zachary, Belaire, Central, East Ascension, and Glen Oaks in the Northern district, the Buff swingers were in for it. The team was consoled with Jimmy Anderson going to state. Buff’s with rackets in hand went into action in the Regional Tournament. Just as always, they are preparing to better their swing for the 1980-81 season.
