BUT HE HAS SOMETIMES FAILED. PEOPLE GIVE US INSIGHTS, A TTITUDES We learn a lot from PEOPLE. Whitman said, “There was a child, who went forth every day, and the first object he looked upon. . . that object he became. ” So does every person we are acquainted with become a part of us: our best friend, our worst foe, casual acquaintances, teachers, relatives, and even Old Lady So-and-So. Baker High School is the center of the students' social life. Here they grow by taking a part of everybody they know. The more people they know, the “larger ” they grow, and the happier they may be. PEOPLE give us thoughts, attitudes, and points of view. Baker High School is the center of our thought-gathering process, and the PEOPLE at Baker High are the principal thought-givers. Opening 3 Each individual must reflect his own image. That image can be expressed through music, conversation, or solitude. We all are ttying to “light up our world, ” whether it be by relaxing, studying, or listening; each in his own way contributes to mankind. INDIVIDUALITY IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS. 4 Opening Opening 5 In the beginning, We understand Neither the universe, Nor the world. Nor people, AW ourselves. Blindly, we reach. Eager to realize a togetherness that must Be left forever untouched. We pause to remember the good times, before Movin' on to enjoy, enjoy, ENJOY. 6 Opening We received two types of education at school — academic and social — each as important as the other. BAKER H gh School BUFFALOES Student “77-78 319 We find time to interact with others. Specialized friendships are vital. Opening 7 8 Opening This school term is definitely the most important for us, whether we are Freshmen or Seniors. There are many things that we may wish to hold somewhere in the hack o f our minds. For example, we might not forget the long hours of a school day, 8:07 AM to 3:15 PM, but for some o f us, especially seniors, our day ends earlier than the normal school day. Furthermore, we certainly won 7 forget a difficult instructor, or a visit to the principal's o ffice. Yet some items we do tend to forget: the top local news story of 77, The Tungsen Park. Edwin Edwards scandal, not to mention the tornado drills for which we so diligently practiced. A ll these things combine to produce a Baker High School Student. Opening 9 I Our high school days are some of the happiest days of our lives. With just a little effort we can make these days happy and profitable. School life often helps to determine our careers. Baker offers a curriculum that possibly enables each of us to discover the career that we will make our life's work. The wide choice of classes is influential in getting us prepared for the future. Providing a pleasant relief from studying, which is so often the only thing connected with school', are sports, clubs, and other extracurricular activities that help students become well-rounded individuals. By participating in such activities, students learn good sportsmanship while improving their athletic abilities; we develop good citizenship while helping others; but most important we acquire a wide variety of knowledge while working with many other individuals. Essentially, what it all boils down to is, Baker High School is us, and we are Baker High School. 10 Opening Doors come in various sizes and styles. Some are elaborate and ornate like Ghiberti's carved doors in Florence; some are simple and straight forward like the Quaker styles from Pennsylvania. But they all lead somewhere. Perhaps the doors leading to the most significant “somewhere of all are the doors o f any high school in our land. For the People of Baker, we are the doors of Baker High. Entrance doors of Baker High School are important — through them we enter the auditorium. the lab. the shop, the cafeteria, and — most important — the classroom. In these places we see. we hear, we apprehend, we understand. The “Exit door — graduation — is perhaps even more important. The concepts built up in four years at Baker High are, open upon the arrival of the moment of graduation, handed to each graduate symbolically in the rolled diploma tied with red and black ribbon. And the closing of this “Exit ” door has a meaning: the students of BHS are equipped to open other doors. Anywhere. Any time. 1 2 Opening Opening 1 3 Knowledge Evolves From Things ‘7 will make a list... of lovely things to hold in memory'. ” Baker High School is more than a cluster of buildings on a given plot: it is a typewriter in N-9, a sewing machine in C-2, a novel in the library, a volleyball in the gym, the driver's education car. The professional football, baseball, and track stars of tomorrow spend hours upon hours building themselves up: prospective brides learn the fine art of cake baking through many hours over the mixing bowl; upcoming business executives learn the tricks of their trade at the typewriter, the adding machine, the shorthand pad, the file cabinet; the future scientist is intrigued by potassium reactions and pendulums. Knowledge is gained through experience — experience with typewriters, sewing machines, books, balances, footballs, baseballs and bats, French horns and slide rules. Knowledge is the final product of direct contact with things. THINGS at Baker High School are important. 14 Opening Opening 1 5 gjgn, sign, everywhere a sign blockin' out the scenery messin' my mind CAUT ON! DO NOT BUFFS 1 A teacher is someone who shares his knowledge with students, guides them in their studies and shares their experiences. Cathy Bondurant A teacher is more than just a person who imparts knowledge. A teacher has to have a special relationship with her students so that she can share her knowledge with them. Vickie Spiers A teacher is a person dedicated to guiding and molding the life of another. He experiences no real satisfactionofrom life other than the success of his student. W. J. Rome Faculty 1 9 Mr. Epperson Principal Baker High School has completed the seventy-eighth year of a proud and colorful history. This yearbook has recorded many of the accomplishments and activities of the 77-78 school year, and the student body will be able to refer to this record with pride in the future as fond memories are recalled. I will always remember the pleasant association I had with each student and faculty member, and consider 1977-78 as an important year in my life. Congratulations are in order for the yearbook staff and sponsor for producing such a fine annual for the enjoyment of the entire Baker High School family. Under the direction of Coach Milton Broussard, this year has been no exception. The Student Spirit Council sponsored the caravans to away football games, was responsible for the sign in front of Baker High, and held a parish-wide student exchange. Furthermore, for Christmas and Thanksgiving, the Student Spirit Council made food baskets for needy families. 1977-1978 was indeed a busy year. I learned it’s always a good idea to save and it's even a better idea to do it at Capital Savings Association. They have something for everybody—savings certificates, retirement trust accounts and passbook accounts, the way I started. When you get a little older, you realize how important it is to save money. Going to college is one very good reason to put your money to work in a Capital Savings account. In fact, getting the things you want—A college education, a new car, furniture for your own place—can start with a good savings program. So don't let that money sit around (or be spent!) in your pocket. Start early at Capital Savings Association . . . because earlier is definitely better when it comes to saving! Money is our business and your money is our business, too!
