The student body and faculty can look upon the 1975-76 school year with a sense of pride as accomplishments were numerous. This yearbook has pictured many of these accomplishments as a permanent record for your future enjoyments. It was a pleasure to have been associated with each member of the 1975-76 student body and faculty and to have felt a pan of the many achievements of each school organization. 46 Faculty Mr. Bullock My congratulations to the annual staff sponsors and members of the faculty for making this a successful school year. Through your hard work and dedicated efforts you have preserved for us something of the Buffalo Spirit of our school and campus life that will always be a pleasing reminder of the past. Memories of your achievements and failures , victories and losses, of heartaches, of hearts gladdened are all recorded in this 1975-76 yearbook. Keep this book and treasure it for years to come. Mr. Banks 1 have made many friends up here in the last six years. When I came here I found a very good school and I hope in some way I have made it a better school. The principal, Mr. Epperson, and the assistant principal, Mr. Bullock, have been very fine people to work with. I have enjoyed our relationship of the past six years. I can’t say enough for the very fine faculty which has been so cooperative and responsive to all the things I wanted to do. It has also been rewarding to work with such a fine student body. Baker High School can be extremely proud of the young men and the young ladies it graduates. Faculty 47 Dean Thomas This year Baker High School has added a new administrative office called the Dean of Students. The man chosen for this job was Coach Larry Thomas, a ten year veteran of Baker High School. The Dean of Student’s duties are primarily concerned with working with attendance, student activities, and also working with students with school related problems. This office will help in the smooth operation of Baker High School. 48 Faculty Guidance Faculty 49 MISS L. JOHNSON My free period seems to be the shortest period of the day.” MRS. M. For example, I have only recently realized the wise counsel of a man whom I greatly respect. He said that the focus of our teaching should be on the student more than on the subject taught. He also said that by listening, not by talking, can wc better learn what a student needs to know about our subject and about how that subject relates to the art of living.” MRS. G. The Buffs downed the Central Wildcats 13-7 in their first grid meeting since 1969. Football 85 r “Football is a game of violence, a spartan game. It requires sacrifice, dedication and self-denial. ” Vince Lombardi Baker 20 — Broadmoor 20 The Baker Buffs called on a little Cajun Power to salvage a 20-20 deadlock with Broadmoor’s Buccaneers in the 1975 Prep-Grid season opener for both clubs at Wedge Kyes Memorial Stadium. The Buffs were trailing 20-8 midway the third quarter when in stepped Hokie Gajan, alias the Cajun Kid , who began a rally that just fell short. 86 Football Baker 6 — Brother Martin 6 Baker High School’s Buffaloes and the Crusaders” of Brother Martin High School of New Orleans, battled to a 6-6 tie on the rain-soaked turf of Baker’s Wedge Kyes Memorial Stadium. The home-standing Buffs and the visiting Crusaders swapped first and second half touchdowns, respectively, in a game that was rain-delayed for an hour and forty-five minutes. This was the first meeting between the two Quad-A powers. Football 87 “Difficulties are things that show what men are. Epicetus Baker 6 — Ixie 20 Lee High School Rebels put the ”D back in Dixie with a resounding 20-6 non-district Quad-A football victory over the Baker Buffs at Wedge Kyes Memorial Stadium. The last time Lee had defeated the Buffs was in 1972, the year the Rebs won the old District 4-A A A A Championship. Incidentally, that was the last time the Buffs were defeated on their home turf in regular season play. 88 Football Baker 40 — Bogalusa 0 Baker opened its 1975 District campaign with a 40-0 win over the Bogalusa Lumberjacks at Wedge Kyes Memorial Stadium in a Woodchoppers Ball. Leroid Jones scored on jaunts of 1, 77, and 2 yards; twin Leroyal Jones scored on a three yard run; Quarterback Terry Felton got the first of three second quarter touchdowns on a 9 yard run; and safetyman Mike Hutchinson brought back an interception 45 yards for a touchdown. Football 89 “Go Face Them and Fight Them. . . Baker 14 — Covington 21 Quarterback Martin Frost pegged a 23 yard scoring pass to his tightend with 44 seconds left in the game to give the undefeated Covington Lions a 21-14 District 7-AAAA victory over the Baker Buffaloes on the Lions 8h home field. The Buffs were leading 14-7 going into the third period and led still, after the Lions roared back with a touchdown, but the PAT was blocked to withhold the Buffs’ lead by 1, 14-13. The Buffs held the powerful offense of the highly regarded Lions until the last minute. 90 Football Baker 28 — Slidell 7 Baker relied on an old saying, One of a good thing is enough Friday night as Leroid Jones gained 200 yards and scored 24 of Baker’s 28 points to lead the Buffs in a 28-7 rout of the Slidell Tigers at Wedge Kyes Memorial Stadium on the Baker campus. The Tigers were previously unbeaten in district play before the Buffaloe Stampede at Baker. Be savage again. Hamlin Garland Football 91 Baker 48 — Scotlandville 20 Baker and Scotlandville are geographically close, but if the mapmakers had been at the game, they would be hard at work Monday morning redrawing the maps as the Buffs downed a super rally in the second half by the Hornets to take a 48-20 District 7-AAA A victory at Wedge Kyes Memorial Stadium. It was the second win in a row for the Buffs, who had a very slow start. Leroid Jones scored on runs of 18, and 72 yards; and Hokie Gajan picked up touchdowns on runs of 17 and 81 yards to give the Buffs the strong running game they are noted for, but couldn’t find in the earlier part of the season. 92 Football Baker 21 — Hammond 6 The Powerful Baker Buffs, led by slashing runs by run-ningbacks Leroid Jones and Hokie Gajan, stampeded the Hammond Tornadoes 21-6 at Strawberry Stadium in Hammond. It was the Tors’' Homecoming tilt. The Buffs have now won 4 of their last 5 games. 3 in a row. This gives the Buffs a 4-1 district slate. It seems as if the Big Red Buffaloe Machine is finally beginning to work. “Now I’ll but lie down and bleed awhile, then Vll rise and fight again. ” Football 93 Baker 21 — Belaire 6 Halloween found Baker making Belaire wonder witch way was up. That's what a couple of 92 yard touchdown runs can do to you, make you wonder and wish. Although it was the night of witches and goblins, there were no uglies in Wedge Kyes Memorial Stadium this night. Homecoming Queen of 1976, Miss Joni Nelson cheered her team on to victory as the Buffs stampeded a bunch of upset-minded Bengals on the Baker campus. “Danger gleams like sunshine. 94 Football To a brave man’s eyes. ” Eurepedis Baker 28 — Glen Oaks 0 Rivalry time; super bonfire, tree tissuing, etc., are all a pan of it. However, this year was not the rivalry of past years as the Baker Buffaloes stomped the Glen Oaks Panthers 28-0 at Memorial Stadium. It clinched a playoff benh for the fifth of the last six years, four straight, for Head Coach J. C. Stewan's Buffs. Leroid Jones took the opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown, leaving doubt in no one’s mind of what type of an affair it was going to be; a one-sided one, in Baker's favor, of course. Football 95 Baker 14 South Lafourche 21 The Baker Buffs traveled to South Lefourche in search of a big game but came up with a dry hook for the second straight year as the Tarpons speared the Buffs 21-14. The Buffs fought hard, but could not stop the powerful Tarpons. Through dust of conflict and through battle flame John S. Each of the people on these two pages contributed to the success of this book. Some more than odiers, but they all gave something. The planning of this book began in the middle of June of 1975, and from there it's hard to express the blood, sweat, and tears that went into the production of this book. Whether we were successful or not depends on how well the student body likes the yearbook . The staff included: Mr. Green, Mrs. Spears, and Mrs. Peaks, sponsors. JoLeah Fressina, Ted Franklin, Hokie Gajan, Melissa Robin, Denise Curtis, Denise Berthelot, Melva Sanders, Irma Calix, Billy Eckect, Debbie Laird, Rhonda Taylor, Elaine Gajan, and Timmy Hymcl. As you look through this edition we hope you will uncover treasured memories of the year 1976. 128 Activities Yearbook ’76 1. Staff picture taken during workshop at LSU. 2. Mr. Green - Sponsor 3. It was a very proud moment for the fourteen girls as they were escorted on to the football field at half time by their fathers. The name of this year's winner was kept secret until it was announced that Joni Nelson was this year’s queen. She was crowned by Pam Russell Epperson, last year's queen. The football team did their part as they went on to defeat the Belaire Bengals to cap a perfect ending for everyone involved. Cohan George M. Cohan is a musical based on the life of a famous Broadway producer named George M. Cohan, whose career came to a stop when Broadway changed and he could not. Baker High School presented the musical in March. With a cast of 40 people, Tom Jones directing; Richard Bezel, orchestral director; and Debbie Keeblcr, dance choreographer, the musical was a success. Tim Spurlock starred in the title role of George M. Cohan. Also starring were LeRoid Jones, Ms. Randow, Donnie Parrish, June Hines, Linda Merse, Jackie Kllison, and Debbie Keebler. Mr. Jones has presented Baker with other musicals such as, Music Man, Charlie Brown, Calamity Jane,” and The Unsink-ablc Molly Brown. But with all the hours of rehearsal and all the dancing and singing over and over, the musical George M. Cohan was a success and very enjoyable to present. 1 36 Activities Dramatics This year, the Speech Department under the direction of Mr. Bailey, successfully performed three, one-act plays. They were Happy Journey, Amahl and die Night Visitors, and Special Guest. Through projects like this students are able to learn the fundamentals of drama, public speaking, and self-assurance. With this experience behind them, Mr. Bailey hopes to prepare students to meet people more at ease, calmly and coolly. We wish Mr. Bailey well in his endeavors. Activities 1 37 r Humanities Humanities combines American music, art, history and literature. It provides a broader and deeper insight into America's cultural heritage. The course interrelates trends in American philosophy and history with the creative expressions of those beliefs in the a ns. With every unit of study, students must learn the characteristics of thet period and then relate them through activities such as creative analyses, producing art projects, attending music lectures, and by taking many varied tests. Students receive two hours credit; they think they deserve four because of the demands. But, they say they love it and when they say that, their teachers love them. American Studies (Humanities) is the best course at Baker, according to the teachers and their students. 1 38 Activities Activities 1 39 1. •’Now dial we're all here ... 2. Mis. Baker students exchanged and gained new knowledge from the foreign exchange students. Baker High has students from many countries. They include such faraway places as: Brazil, Holland, Sweden, and Ecuador. Baker High will miss these two ladies, however, their contributions to the school and community will not soon be forgotten. These ladies represent a combined total of 45 years of English teaching at B. H. S. Mrs. Caraway began her teaching career in 1934 and came to Baker High in 1950. A native of Norwood, La., she was an English teacher at Baker High School. Mrs. Olmstead began teaching in Baton Rouge in 1945 and came to Baker in 1957. During her 19 years of teaching 10th grade English at B.H.S., her motto to her students was Where there’s a will, there’s a way. We wish them the best of everything in the future and assure them that as their memories are preserved in this book, they are preserved in our hearts as well. 1. Mrs. Mattie Caraway 2. We also received great coo from the Raker High School faculty. Many times we had to get someone out of class, and we appreciated the help they gave us. A special thanks to Mr. Weaver, Timmy Hymel, Djk'id D ke, and Mr. Johnny McCann for their contributions in this area. We also appreciate the businesses that took ads in our 1976 book.
