BAKER ELEME TARY SCHOOL s. -1-.. - i 5 I Ill .ll I : 'll in tn an 1 in 5F: :W!T: ll It a qi I .HJ mr assess! 104, li 14-Y k From 1940 to 1949, under the able leadership of Principal Wedge Kyes and with the co-operation of the Parent-Teacher Association, Baker's first cafeteria was erected. Football, which had been discontinued during the war years, was started again in 1947 with Mr. Perry Angle as coach and Mr. R. J. Aertker assistant. For the first time in the school's history the basketball and football teams won the State B Championships. The newspapers proclaimed Baker's 'B' team victory over class AA Catholic High in football as being one of the biggest upsets in high school foot- ball history. From 1947 until the present time, Baker High has continued to grow. Before the present new high school was added in 1949, classes were held in the various churches of the town because of crowded conditions. ln 1949 baseball was added to the sports calendar, and Baker won the city championship. The school was rated an A school in 1949. The teachers numbered thirty-three and enrollment nine hundred and thirty-six. Mr. Kyes, who worked so diligently for Baker High passed away on November 15, 1949. Baker felt his loss keenly from the standpoint not only of an excellent principal but also of a sincere friend. Mr. Guy H. Sommers became principal after Mr. Kyes' death. This bnings the school history up to the present writing. This year, 1959, an auditorium, a vocational arts building, a home economics building, a new band room, and a complete stadium are being constructed. Baker High, with an enrollment of fifteen hundred pupils, is looking forward to continued growth and success.
