Baker 0 Columbus 18 Baker closed its season by being the Baker 14 Hardaway 22 only freshman team in Columbus to Baker 6 Kendrick 6 defeat the freshman Carver Tigers and Baker 6 Spencer 14 barely lost to Hardaway in the closing seconds of a game earlier in the Baker 20 Carver 8 season. 73 Varsity Basketball This year’s basketball team, according to Coach Gresham, has been the best that Baker has had since 1976. They’ve played hard and worked well together all season. The boys lacked height, but they made up for it with team work. As with any sports team, it is most important that the members do not get discouraged. These players kept this in perspective as they battled each opponent and never gave up, even at the final buzzer. Two of the players, Danny Walker and Michael Collier, qualified for the All-City Basketball Team. 74 Danny Walker Michael Collier Girls’ Basketball The Lady Lions’ basketball team had two goals in mind for the 1983-84 season: one, to win more games than last year; and two, to make it to the Christmas tournament without having to play the pig tail game to qualify. Both goals were accomplished. Coach Wojciechowski returned unity and pride to a team who had only two games in two years. “This team does not have a lot of super talent, so we rely on hard work, pride, and giving 110%, win or lose,” says Coach Wojciechowski. Angela Pugh and Mia Bell are two of the most talented players on the team. Angela does the fancy shooting and dribbling from the outside, while Mia works on the inside, getting rebounds and blocking shots. In all, the Lady Lions are on their way up. LaDoris Chappell Angela Pugh Annette Robinson Stacy Edmond Connie Dixon Victoria Watts 77 J.V. Basketball The freshman basketball team worked very hard this year and had great team work. Their record was 5-9. The junior varsity basketball team had an outstanding season. They completed their sub region schedule at 13-1 and were the sub-regional champions. Their overall record, including competition outside the city, was an outstanding 15-5. The players will form the nucleus of next year’s varsity squad. Leroy Scott. Mike Williams. Alonzo Lynn. The girls, directed by Mrs. Linda Gordon, compete with teams from other schools in the city in four events: Uneven parallel bars, balance beam, vault, and floor exercise. Gymnastics requires a great deal of practice and time spent working on routines for competition. Much of what goes into a routine reflects the individual doing the routine. It expresses her personality. Gymnastic Team members must also exhibit sportsman like conduct at all times and maintain the attitude of working as a team. 83 Kim Sanders, Lisa Keplinger. Dona Clover. At the end of the summer, they attended the National Cheerleaders’ Association Spirit Raising Camp for one week. They received four blue ribbons, a spirit stick, and were rated “superior”. The Varsity Cheerleaders have passed unsurmountable odds to acquire a special place in school. They work hard, selling programs and spirit ribbons during the football season. At the same time, they serve as back- ups for the varsity cheerleaders. Goodron Special guests and senior class members proceed to the Library. 158 The celebration included a speech by Dr Foster Watkins, president of Gainesville Junior College and a 1955 Baker graduate. Virginia Pickern Welch wasn't at Baker on Sept. 6, 1943, the day the school opened, but was there four years later. A 1950 graduate, she has memories of more than the school building. Some of the students had to ride a bus for 18 miles.” says Mrs. Welch. ‘‘The bus was so crowded that many were standing in the aisles.” Mrs. Welch, 4246 Ridgefield Court, saw two daughters, Lee and Dale, graduate from the school in the late '70s. Before the present gym was built in 1964, basketball games were played in what is now the auditorium, recalls Richard Brogdon, a 1950 graduate A 1959 graduate. Jean A Redmon, 2922 Avondale Road, said as she made plans to attend the celebration. ‘‘It's hard to believe Baker’s been around that long. I’m proud to be a former Baker student.” 159 ALMA MATER In the pines of dear old Georgia Stands a school we love. We will always keep her standards Towering high above. U S. Secretary of War from 1916 to 1921. The school was built to accomodate the growing number of Muscogee County children in South Columbus, many of whom were the children of servicemen at Ft Benning. Today, Baker has 55 teachers and approximately 870 students. The school was county operated until it merged with the Columbus city schools in 1950 to form the Muscogee County School District. Before the merger, the building housed kindergarten through 11th grades. In 1964, not only was a gym built and the auditorium remodeled, but the track and tennis courts were constructed. Also the varsity gold and tennis teams were organized On March 31, 1971, fire destroyed the auditorium, leaving only the walls. After the fire, the auditorium was rebuilt and is in full use today. That auditorium was the scene of much celebration on December 14, 1983 as Baker students and faculty, past and present, observed the school’s 40th birthday Following the assembly, guests were honored at a reception in the school library. 160 9 ' In 1943, while they waited for their fathers to return safely from World War II, students at the new Baker Village High School made do. They made do in white-framed, temporary buildings and in a library no bigger than a living room. Lunch lines in the tiny cafeteria stretched almost out the door. At times radiators in the classrooms became so hot that windows had to be opened. Once the home for kindergarteners and high school seniors alike. Baker Village High School, now known as Baker High School, observed its 40th anniversary with an assembly at the school at 1544 Benning Road. The celebration included a very special visit from Mrs. G.W Cook, the wife of the first principal of Baker. PRINCIPALS AT BAKER 1 Mr. E.W Cook 1951-1956 2. Dr. Frederick W. Kirby 1957 1964 3. The beat that he walked was a battlefield, too, Just as if he had gone off to war; Though the flag of our nation won’t fly at half-mast To his name they will add a gold star. Yes, somebody killed a policeman today Maybe in your town or mine, While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors A cop put his life on the line. Now his ghost walks the beat on a dark city street And he stands at each new rookie’s side; He answered the call of himself gave his all. And a part of America died 165 SONGS T.V.SHOWS 1.
