Moultrie fought unsuccessfully Lion touchdown drives of 55, 62, and 80 yards. Jimmy Payne scored from the 3, and John Bolles racked up two short T.D. jaunts from three yards out. Charles Horne engineered the moves with expert care, getting great help from linemen James Crowson, Herb Smith, John Preston, Ronnie Ogletree, Jerry Buchannan, George Langworth and Nick Haick. In the first period, they moved to Baker’s one-yard line, but a holding penalty killed the drive. Again in the fourth stanza the Poets powered their way to just 36 inches shy of paydirt, but Ceorge Langworth bauled Lanier’s quarterback to earth at the line of scrimmage on a fourth down play. The win ended Jordan’s local domination in football, having failed to lose a single Bi-City game in the last two years. Also, the win gave Baker its first three-game winning streak in any one season. An intercepted pass, a runback of a punt, and a loose ball in the backfield accounted for the winning margin. Corky Owens gathered in a punt at his own 46, and galloped 54 yards for the first Baker touchdown. George Langworth picked off a Jordan aerial at their own 30, setting up a score by Jimmy Payne. The final Baker score was accounted for when Jimmy Payne took the ball away from Jordan’s quarterback and stepped off 55 yards for the third touchdown. Baker quarterback Charlie Horne then “loosened-up” his throwing arm, accounting for two touch- downs. George Langworth hauled in the first pass and scored, concluding a 61-yard march. With only seconds left in the first half, Corky Owens pulled in the second Horne touchdown aerial, a 32-yard affair. The Lions ended their season upon region foes by trampling the Warner Robins Demons 40-6. Richard Ligon scored twice. Charlie Horne. David Harman. Paul Ferguson, and George Langworth each posted six points. The Lions piled up 22 first downs, 416 yards rushing, and 69 yards passing, while holding the Demons to five first downs, 121 yards rushing, and zero yards passing. The only bright spot in Warner Robins’ output was their punting average of 40.4 yards, and they had plenty of those to handle. The Lions erupted for six wins and three losses and gained the reputation of a South Georgia powerhouse. The Lions kicked off the season with Valdosta, and the Wildcats almost kicked us out of the competition. Richard Ligon broke his arm, and Baker seemed mighty crippled after meeting the nation’s number one team. But Baker fought back after losing to the slate’s number two squad, Willing- ham, by six bare points. They plastered Central, up-ended the state ranked Moultrie Packers in the campaign’s most inspired performance, slugged Jordan, ran over highly touted LaGrange, and bombed Albany. All this occurred with the part-time absence of Ligon, Marion Short, Mike Purtle, and many other bone-weary ballplayers. The Lions shuffled most of the load on graduating seniors “Big John” Preston, Charlie Horne, James Crowson, Herb Smith, Mike Purtle, Richard Ligon, Jerry Buchannan, Neal Chesser, Nick Haick, George Langworth, Vic Garvey and Marion Short. These athletes racked up so many awards, it is hard to find a place to begin. John Bo lies, Ronnie Ogletree, Jimmy Payne, and Corky Owens all played brilliantly as underclassmen. The fact remains true that here was Baker’s finest, playing their hardest schedule with many heart stopping moments. Next year’s brigade may challenge this ’63 version, but they have a long road to haul to equal its performance. Now the season is over and the excitement has died down, but Baker still may never forget this team. Yet there were many times when the Lions showed the championship form evident in many past Baker combos. In the first game with Central, the Lions ran “rough-shod” over the Red Devils, using to perfection the “shuffle” form offense made famous by Coach Ball. Scoring on many lay-ups, the Lions won the battle by a score of 67-45. Baker won second place in the Christmas tournament, losing only to Columbus, 53-41. The Lions had previously beaten Valley and Opelika before losing to the Blue Devils in the finals. Bill Denny, Phil Cofer, and George Miller were chosen to the All-Tournament squad, with Bill also gaining Most Valuable Player. Near the end of the season, Baker won the title of “giant killer” after knocking off two state-ranked quintets. First, the Lions bounced Albany, number one in Georgia, 39-36. The following week they bombed third ranked LaGrange, 44-32. With men returning next year, plus other prospects from the B-team, Baker is hoping the Lions will return to its position at the TOP of basketball circles in the state of Georgia. Members of this year’s squad graduating in June will be Phil Cofer, George Miller and Robert Davis. Returning next year will be Bill Denny, Steve Davis, Warren Bowland, Jimmy Friese, Neil McLean, Eddie Miller, Glenn Seawell, Warner Wilbourn, Tommy Bassett, Milton Caffey, Paul Ferguson, and Terry Howard.
