BAKER HIGH SCHOOL This is Baker . . . where we spent the time of our lives . . . working . . . playing . . . studying . . . through whose portals passed some of our nearest and dearest friends ... a school composed of so many different elements . . . the Army students who come to us from the four comers of the globe and on the other hand those who have attended Baker since the first grade ... all of our teachers . . . our cherished memories . . . Yes, this is Baker, and we are proud of the part you have played in our lives! DR. FREDRICK W. KIRBY Principal Dr. Fredrick W. Kirby came to serve as the head of Baker High School in September 1957. In one short year he has won the admiration of all who know him. Under his dynamic leadership, Baker has undergone numerous changes which have proved beneficial to the student body and to the smooth operation of the school. DEDICATION 1958 Mrs. Ruth Knight Atkinson The Senior Class of Baker High School wishes to pay tribute to a truly excellent teacher. Many teachers here at Baker are worthy of that tribute, but among the group, one person stands forth in our thoughts. Mrs. Ruth Atkinson, through her willingness to guide inquir- ing minds, her insistence on high scholastic standards, and her genuine interest in each in- dividual student, has inspired all who know her. She is not only a teacher, but also a friend, a counselor. Because of her understanding wisdom, many have been able to make sound de- cisions regarding their future—decisions affecting the outcome of their lives, and because of this understanding, because of the important position she holds in each student’s heart, we dedicate the 1958 ARROWHEAD to Mrs. Ruth Knight Atkinson. Yet, we leave the better for having attended Baker ... As we look through our lives, how can we ever forget the laughter the heartaches—the depth and breadth of emotions that come from living, truly living, here at Baker? How can we ever forget the near and dear friends we have made, both in our class and others, the teachers, our guides, who played such an impor- tant part in molding our lives . . . the football games with all their excitement, the smell of candy apples and freshly roasted peanuts intermingled, and all the while, the crowds . . . the band passing by, the roll of the drum piercing the sharp autumn air . . . the deep sorrow at Mr. Cook’s untimely death . . . the enthusiasm with which we welcomed Dr. Kirby . . . the Junior-Senior at last! Girls and boys ar- rayed in their finest, looking their best . . . remem- ber Class Day? and the tears? Wonder who said they were not going to cry! And notv, now we are about to cross that sharply dividing threshhold be- tween childhood and adulthood, reluctantly, yet, eagerly. Reluctantly leaving one wonderful way of life behind, while eagerly accepting the challenge the netv way offers, confident that we are fully prepared . . . How can we ever thank you, Baker, for the Look at Life you gave us? • ABRAHAMSON, DALE GEORGE • ALLISON, SYLVIA SUE • BAKER, GLENN Transfer Student R.O.T.C. Officer, 4. TEEN TONES Gerald Powers, Gordon Barksdale, Larry Kent, and Robert Burnett. The students of Baker are very proud to know that such a fine group of singers originated from their school. Yes, the Teen Tones , now famous throughout the southeast, are a credit to the school from which they come. Their recording of Gypsy Boogie and Faded Love was released January 25 by Nu-Clear Recording Company. The boys were sponsored by W. S. Persons, a local furniture dealer. Speaking on behalf of the student body, the ARROWHEAD staff would like to say Good luck, and we hope you sell a mil- lion. COULTER'S COMBO Frank Thomas, Larry Coulter, Gene Entrekin, Ronnie Seats, Charles Ad- cock, and Ronnie Clark. Coulter's Combo, another Baker first, is composed of two trumpets, drums, two trombones, and a bass horn. The boys have been entertaining us for the past two years at dances, parties, and during chapel programs, playing music that really swings, with Ronnie Seats taking the vocal spotlight occasionally. As of yet they have not made a record, but we arc hoping they will do so in the very near future. Marching for ten cents a step, Myra Thomp- son, Baker's walker, advanced eight miles plus 257 steps, toward Cusseta in the two-day Walk-A- Thon which began at eight a.m., Saturday, Jan- uary 18, and lasted until six p.m. that night. It was resumed on Sunday at one p.m. Keeping pace with Myra was her manager, Johnny Mundy, as well as countless Bakerites who helped gather contributions. The Speech Club, un- der the leadership of President; Ocie Gamble, spon- sored Baker's version of the Grand Ole' Opry ; benefits were given to the Walk-A-Thon fund. The group also appeared on a local television station, WTVM, to advertise the event. The Tri- Hi-Y girls sold crutches and numerous parties were given by individuals at this time to support Baker's team. Left to right are: Kenneth Vann and Ann Alverson, Jordan; John Flournoy, Columbus; and Myra Thompson and Johnny Mundy, Baker. Second Consecutive Year The Beta Sigma Gamma presents their version of the Grand Ole' Opry direct from WBHS in Bakerville, Tennessee. More important than linker s winning, however, is the $5,000 the three Columbus high schools were able to con- tribute to the very worthy polio cause as a result of their undertaking. It is such a project as this that tends to raise teen-agers' esteem in other's eyes. Thank you, Teens Against Polio! Editor Here are some cold-but-enthusiastic Walk-A-Thon sup porters.
