“The most manifest sign of wisdom is a continual cheerfulness: her state is like that of things in the regions above the moon, always clear and serene—MONTAIGNE. ■ V It7hen the doors of Baker High School opened in September, 1943, you found among its faculty members one, who through this first decade of Baker s history has shown a keen interest in the school’s activities as well as in the individual student. In appreciation of the devotion and understanding shown to us through our high school years, we take pleasure in dedicating our 1953 ARROWHEAD to MRS. ELIZABETH HOLLIS CHILDS i Umvss W ' ' ' VA n V V In commemoration of the tenth anniversary of the founding of our school, we have chosen to bring forth and portray the achievements of our school during its first decade. It is our sincere desire that this hook will serve as a pleasant reminder of our sojourn at Baker. These past ten years have served as stepping stones to higher and greater achievements. May these achievements serve as beacons to those who cross the threshold of Baker and may its light so shine that peace and harmony dwell in the hearts of each and every one. The Baker gridiron machine engineered by quarterbak Jimmy Lee and thrust forward hy hard-driving fullback J lines Ward ended the season with an impressive 5-5 record. The roaring Lions also enjoyed their best basketball s.ason as the Baker courlsters chalked up a 14-4 count be- hind the able efforts of Capl. Robert Burgess, Sharpshooting Jimmy Lee, and hook-shooting Carlton Garner. Stocky James Ward was probably the outstanding athlete of the year as he was named “Back of the Year”, Most Valuable Player”, and “Most Popular Player”. James, who plans to attend the University of Alabama was an im- portant factor in the Baker grid machine is accredited with a big chunk of the Baker scores. Sharing the limelight with James is cool-headed Robert Burgess who was an important spark of the hardwood squad and was selected as “Most Valuable Player” in tint category. He was also chosen along with Jimmy Lee and lanky Carlton Garner to the All-Region team. cTComsl jd£ fompkisL GRAPHIC ARTS SERVICE COMMERCIAL PHOTOGRAPHY PHOTO ENGRAVING FINE PRINTING PUBLISHING OFFICE SUPPLIES Columbus Office Supply Company 1335 6th Avenue PHONE 2-4478 P.
