THEME Long before the whxte man settled on the banks of the Chattahoochee the Muscogee lnduans a tribe of the Creeks hunted and fmshed along the stream Though the lncllans are gone from our Georgla scenes there are manv thlngs to remind us of the heritage they left The rhythmlcal beauty of such names as Nacoochee l-llwasee Cherokee Muscogee and Chattahoochee us glven to us by that race The waving flelds of sulky corn and golden tobacco are more tanguble gxfts of our predecessors plows of farmers often turn up arrowheads that once felled the deer ln appreciation to the race that gave us our land the Seniors of l945 have chosen these vanquished but gallant people as the theme of our flrst yearbook 1 1 ' 1 ' 1 1 1 1 1 f

VI-l When Amenca went to war nn 1041 many changes and adlustments were thrust on her cxtuzens Out of the un unng chaos there was born un Muscogee County an unstrtutuon not dedicated to war but to the development of future generatlons For years educators of lvluscogee County had dreamed of a central hugh school for thenr youth but wxth the rountx s scattered populatuon and un suffncuent resources had been unable to reuluze nt Wnth the nnflux of greater army personnel and war workers at Fort Bennnng un 1941 there arose a demand for better housing facllltle Tne l-l us ng Authority of Columbus under the leadershup of Brown Nxcholson m t th demand wnth the construc tion of Newton D Baker Vullage A communntv as large as Baker Vnllage could not exist wlthout a school for nts youth Plans at furst provided for tempora y wooden buildings to be used through the duratnon Here Mr Cl nton Moon and other county offlcnals safv a chance for the realization of thenr dream Why not make the school at Baker Village a coun y wlde hugh school and a permanent lnstltutlonl After several traps to Washnngton ccunty offlcuals re elved federal approprla tuons wnth whnch to bu ld a modern fureproof structure valued at over half a mullnon dollars J W Blgge s F F Lockwood and E D Smith drew plans for the bJlld year Its doors were opened to tudent Mr E W Cook a leadlng educator n the Muscogee County S hool was eected prnncnpal A staff of ff I fu r was ca efu se dare tclasses and actnvntues Modern buses were secured to transport studerwts from all corners of Muscogee County So out of chaos and the darkness of war there arose a lnght a 1 ht to erase Ignorance from youth s rnunds to bunld st ong healthy bodies and to gunde hearts ln the paths of honor and peace 1llll m ' - ing whnch was finally completed in August, 19-43.
