The seizure of Bairoko Harbor on August 5, ,GFTTCIT f? the end of the vicious fifty-seven-day campaign for the recapture of New eorgia. The Bairoko is the ex-Portage Bay of the CVE 105-120 class. The Eesjsej was built by the Todd Pacific Shipyards, Tacoma, Washington. It was launc e anu- Qry 25, 1945, and sponsored by Mrs. J, J. Ballentrne, wife of the then Rear Admiral J. J. Ballentine, USN. The ship was commissioned July 16, 1945, and Captain Harry Brigham Tempel, USN, assumed command. Preliminary shakedown operations were held in the .Puget Sound area and cul- minated in a special air operations exercise, with the Air Group CVEG-28 aboard, on September 1 and a battle problem conducted September 3. Upon completion of the final battle problem, the ship underwent an avail- ability period at the Naval Drydocks, San Pedro, and on October 18 departed for Pearl Harbor. The Bairoko remained in Pearl Harbor two weeks, playing host to thousands of visitors on Navy Day. On November 7, she steamed out of Pearl Harbor and visited Saipan and Hong Kong, China, before celebrating Christmas in the harbor at Manila. On December 30, 1945, the carrier started out for Guam and the United States, and on the morning of January 25, 1946, the first line was dropped over the bollard on the dock at San Diego, climaxing the first cruise of the Bairoko. She departed San Diego for the Puget Sound area for availability, thence to San Pedro, where the Bairoko remained until her return to San Diego on January 25, 1947. On February 18, 1947, the Bairoko departed for Pearl Harbor and exercises were conducted off the Hawaiian Islands. She set her course westward on April 17 for a long cruise which took her to many islands where American forces had waged war with the Japanese. She visited Guam, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Saipan and Kwa- jalein before returning to Pearl Harbor on May 30, 1947, for a few days before she headed Stateside The Bairoko transported aircraft across the Pacific several times, partici- pated in the atomic bomb test at Eniwetok Atoll and engaged in fleet exercises and maneuvers before she reported to the Pacific Reserve Fleet for inactivation on December 15, 1949. The carrier was reactivated and recommissioned on September 12, 1950, at Alameda, California, underwent sea trials and then steamed to San Diego where she operated from with VS-21 embarked. On November 14, 1950, the Bairoko 'headed for the Far East, and until her arrival back in San Diego August 15, 1951, she operated out of Yokosuka, Japan, on Anti-Submarine Warfare training duty with VS-23 on board. The ship under- went availability back in the States and the crew enjoyed leaves, then with VS-25 aboard, she headed for the Orient once more on December 1 1951. The ship participated in ASW duty until early February, then she off-loaded VS-25, picked up the famed Marine ' Checkerboard Corsair fighter-bomber squadron KVMA-3121 at Kobe and proceeded to Korean waters. On February 17, the first actual combat strike in the seven-year history of the Bairoko was launched at enemy targets behind Communist lines on the west coast of Korea. Hogle, USN, Commanding Officer To the Officers and Men of the USS. BAIROKO: Since l took command of this fine ship last August, many events of great importance have taken place, we have visited on the West Coast for a period that perhaps seemed all too short, we have returned to the Western Pacific and oper- ated in the development of the very important anti-submarine tactics, and then we have operated in the Yellow Sea with an outstanding Marine Squadron em- barked. During all these tasks, the officers and men of the U.S.S. BAIROKO have responded intelligently and energetically in a greater measure than would normally be expected. So now, as I am about to be detached as your Command- ing Officer, may l say to all of you officers and men, individually and collectively, it was a great pleasure on my part to be a small member of such a grand team. Goodbye and good luck until we meet again. Sincerely, R. D, HOGLE Qi Commander Malcolm C. M. Dav took the wheel as the first skipper. ' ln 1945, with blood in its eye and loaded for bear, the squadron moved out across the wide Pacific and was quickly swept into the Okinawa campaign Arriving late in the Pacific theater, this was the only large scale operation the squadron participated in during World War ll, but while the campaign lasted the squadron received credit for 60 and a half enemy aircraft destroyed. ln September, 1945, while still overseas, the squadron was issued the new Grumman Tigercat planes, but combat time had run out and the war was over, so there was no chance to use these planes against the Japanese Empire. Returning to Uncle Sugar Able in 1946, a full allowance of a new version of the perennial and versatile Corsair was issued to the squadron. From then until August, 1950, normal peacetime training was conducted with these planes, together with some newly added Grumman Panther jets, while squadron mem- bers basked in the mellow Southern California sun and lived fatly and pleasantly with their wives and families. Then into the placid pool of training, liberty, and housekeeping.5chores came the electrifying news of the North Koreans' attack on South Korea. As a part of the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, the squadron was ordered to duty beyond the seas, arriving at Kimpo Airfield at Seoul, Korea, on 19 September, 1950. During the see-sawing military situation that existed in the ensuing months, the squadron changed location several times, flying a wide variety of missions and shooting down three Communist aircraft, with an additional probable. When the 1st Marine Division made its immortal withdrawal from the Chosin Reservoir, the squadron delivered everything it had. As a result of this action, the squadron was awarded the Army Distinguished Unit Emblem. This made the second decoration awarded the squadron during the Ko-rean conflict, the first being a Presidential Unit Citation for participation in the lnchon landing earlier that autumn. From the time it was commissioned, Marine Fighter Squadron 312 was known as the Flying Bulldogs, but at some time during the few years of peace or at the outset of the Korean hostilities, the squadron assumed the name of Checker- board. With the brightly distinguishing checkerboard pattern painted on the engine cowlings, close air supported ground units came quickly to recognize the squadron aircraft. One incident widely reported throughout the Korean area tells of the Forward Air Controller, who, after thanking the flight which had just ren- dered signal service by way of close air support, heard the flight leader reply la- conically: Happy to be of service! Courtesy of the fabulous Checkerboard. At the time of this writing, the Checkerboard squadron, fabulous or not, has received national recognition for its support of the United Nations effort in Korea. Besides operating from land bases in Korea, the squadron has flown from U. S. Navy carriers off the Korean west coast, the latest flattop being the USS Bairoko CCVE-1151. On March 1, 1952, the squadron was redesignated Marine Attack Squadron 312 CVMA-3121. MAME ArfAcKScwAo.oN BIZ Lieutenant Colonel Joe H. Y ,Aa l Nil' dn ti-Submarine Squadron Twen ty- ?iaJe NIA ton, Air Antisubmarine Squadron Twenty-five was originally commissioned Com- posite Squadron Twenty-five with Lcdr. J. G. Williams appointed Commanding Of- ficer aboard the U. S. Naval Air Station, San Diego, California, on l April l949. At that time the squadron was equipped with TBM Avenger aircraft. From the commissioning date until the commencement of Operation Miki which was the first full-scale, post-war Army-Navy-Air Force operation in the Pacific, the squad- ron was undergoing intensive Antisubmarine warefare training both ashore and afloat. ln October of i949 the squadron embarked aboard the USS BAIROKO CCVE-ll5l and exercised its ASW mission in the defense of Hawaii against the aggressor submarine of Operation Miki. A high state of readiness was achieved during this period. In early l95O the squadron personnel was seriously depleted by the release of a large number of reserve officers and men and was forced to recommence an- other intensive training cycle. With the outbreak of the Korean War in June, l95O, the squadron was again approaching a condition of optimum readiness and was anxious to be made available for an active role with the United Nations Forces in Korea. However, the squadron was then being groomed for a more necessary role which became apparent with the arrival of the first AF Guardian aircraft on the West Coast later that year. During this entire period the squad- ron participated in various ASW and Hunter,fKiller exercises both ashore and afloat. In October of l95O the squadron received its first Guardian and immedi- ately began a program of evaluation and training with the new aircraft. Lcdr. A. J. Kelly who reported to the squadron in May of i950 as Executive Officer became Commanding Officer on 24 January l95l. Familiarization with the new equipment of the aircraft resulted in improved tactics and techniques of Air Anti- submarine Warfare. By June of l95l the squadron was ready for HunterfKiller work. The first carrier qualifications, and, later, Hunter,!Killer exercises were conducted from the USS BADOENG STRAITS and the USS BAIROKO. ln late fall of l95l the squadron was in all respects ready to move forward to bring the latest ASW equipment and tactics to the Far East Naval Forces. On l December l95l the squadron embarked aboard the USS BAIROKO and sailed for the Far East. Under ComCarDiv l5 the squadron conducted six highly success- ful war time level Hunterfliiller operations during the period, December l95l to May l952. Three of these operations were conducted from the USS BAIROKO, and three were conducted from the USS BATAAN. With its mission accomplished, the squadron departed from the Far East for the Continental United States on 26 May i952 aboard the USS BAIROKO. 3 -i ,,, w if X Lieutenant Commander W. A.
