CINDERELLA'S BALL ES ,H YH in Tx, The annual beauty contest of Baird High School was recently held on October 28, V 1986, at 7:30 P.M. in the school auditorium. This year's theme was Cinderella's Ball . Twenty-nine contestants competed for the crown of Most Beautiful. The top eleven semi-finalists were Becky Self, Carla Barron, Michelle Self, Kristi Corn, Maribeth Fish, Tiffany Hanner, jammie Jaggars, Lore Brumbaugh, Stacy Hawes, Tammy Rogers and Shannon Mendez. Receiving third runner-up ono runners-up were Stacy Hawes and Chris Gulley. First runners-up were Becky Self and st Beautiful of B.H.S. was Shannon Mendez and Most Hand- h rs were Tammy Rogers and Kelly Corn. Second Danny Bell. Student Life 1 l REME BERI G THE GOOD TIME On September 20, 1986, students and alum- ni gathered in the high school auditorium to participate in the homecoming activities. During the business meeting, the homecom- ing exes nominated and elected the Coming Home Queen, Mary Darby Martin, and the Coming Home King, R. L. Elliott, both from the Class of 1929. The honor class of 1936 had twenty-three members present. There were twenty-five exes from out of state. The earliest women graduates were Naomi Heyser and Maggie Cook both from the Class of 1918. Roland Nichols, from the Class of 1926, was recognized as the earliest man graduate. The night's festivities included a football game between the Baird Bears and the Cross Plains Buffaloes. During halftime of the game, Homecoming Queen and King were announc- eclg receiving the honors of queen and king were seniors Carla Barron and Chris Gulley. With only three retuming lertermen, the Bears had no idea what the season had in store. The first half was all Hawley as the inexperienced Bears could not get anything going. Hawley scored late in the second quarter to take a 7 to 0 lead at half. Baird played a totally different game in the second half with Duncan scoring on an ll -yd. nm in the third quarter. Robinson added the PAT to tie the score. The defense led by Morrison with sixteen tackles held Hawley to 45 total yards in the second half. BAIRD wr. ALBANY. there, 20-14, September 12. Baird again had to play away from home and travel to Albany. Parkhill threw to Com in the first half, but Albany had the lead at half 7 to 6. Baird came back to take a 12 to 6 lead on a score by Duncan and the PAT catch by Payne from Parkhill. Albany came back to tie the score 14 to 14 going into the fourth quarter. The Baird defense rose to the occasion again holding Albany to I5 yards in the final quarter. Parkhill led the defense with nineteen tackles with help from Bums, Williams, Morrison, Robinson and Duncan. Then with 1:49 left in the game, Parkhill scored to give Baird a 20 to I4 victory and a catalyst to the upcoming season. BAIRD ur. CROSS PLAINS here, 42-I9, September 20, HOMECOMING. Baird played host to Cross Plains for the first home game which was also Baird's Homecoming, and the Bears played before a packed Bears Den. After a slow stan in the first quarter, Baird exploded for 21 points in the second quarter on scores by Parkhill, a PAT by Robinson, a pass to Duncan, a pass to Payne, and a PAT pass to Duncan. The offensive line of Baird played well led by Gilliland. Hart, Bell, and Lynn allowed Baird to gain over 400 yards and score 42 points. Second half points were made by Bums and Com with PATS by Morrison. BAIRD W. RUCHELLE, here, 44-0, October 5. After a week off, the Bears opened the 1986 District 8-A season not knowing what to expect of Class A. Baird totally outclassed Rochelle 44 to 0 outgaining them 439 yards to 85 in total offense. Parkhill threw for 137 yards and 3 touchdowns. Payne caught two touchdown passes and Com one. Duncan added two touchdowns, and Bums added another and mshed for 105 total yds. Morrison kicked 6 extra points for a perfect night, and the defense recorded a safety for a total of 44 points. Duncan led the defense with 12 tackles followed by R. Robinson, Williams, B. Robinson, and Gunter with interceptions by Com, Burns, and Gonzales. BAIRD vt. LOMETA, there, 29-0, October 10. Baird traveled to Lometa for the second district game and the defense turned in another good game to record its second shutout to win 29 to 0. Lometa opened the game by having the ball inside the Bears 5-yard line twice, but two good goal line stands kept Lometa out of the end zone. Duncan led the offense with 109 yards rushing and one touchdown. Parkhill scored one touchdown and threw another to Corn, and Robinson recovered a fumble for the first touchdown. Morrison added three PATS, and Corn caught a two point conversion. Robinson led the defense with 22 tackles followed by Williams with 21 and one interception and Com with two interceptions. 36 Football X K, , - .sf 5 at 4 OA il -. BAIRD vr. RISING STAR, here, 20-8, October 17. The next district game against Rising Star was a meeting of the district leaders and would tum out to be for the district championship. Baird started the scoring in the first quarter on a touchdown run by Parkhill. Parkhill added another touchdown in the second quarter with Duncan adding another. Mor- rison added two extra points to complete Baird's scoring. The Bears defense turned in another good game with Robinson being in on 18 tackles follow- ed by Gunter, Parkhill and Duncan. Parkhill had a good night throwing the ball with 147 yards to Payne and Gunter. BAIRD w. SANTA ANNA, there, 21-7, October 24. Baird traveled to Santa Anna to play the pre- dictrict favorite in the Mountaineers. Santa Anna played one of their better games of the season giving the Bears all they wanted in the early going. Baird opened the scoring with a pass from Parkhill to Duncan for a 6 to 0 lead. Santa Anna came back to take the lead 7 to 6 putting Baird behind for the first time in six weeks. Burns scored in the second quarter giving Baird a slim halftime lead, Parkhill added the PAT for a 14 to 7 lead. Duncan scored in the second half to close out the scoring with Mor- rison adding the PAT. Robinson led all tacklers followed by Parkhill and Gunter. BAIRD vt. GORMAN, here, 54-28, October 31. For the fifth district game, Baird played host to the Gorman Panthers in a high scoring, very exciting game. Bums open the scoring early on a 78-yd. run, but Gorman came right back to score setting the stage for things to come. Duncan added two scores, Parkhill one, Bums another on a 53-yd. nm, then Morrison added four extra points. Gorman scored their last points with no time left on the clock to make the final score 34 to 28 and a Baird victory. Bums ended up rushing for 172 yds. for his best game of the season, Duncan added 126, and Parkhill 104 for the balanced attack. Duncan led the team in tackles with I7. Eston Fox also had a spectacular interception to highlight the game. BAIRD w. EVANT, there, 21-0, November 7. Baird took the long drive to Evant and was noticeably flat. The defense gave up too many yards in the first half but kept Evant out of the end zone. After some serious discussion , at halftime, Baird seemed to play better in the second half and went on to score 21 points in the second half, Duncan went 69 yds. on the Grst play of the third quarter to give Baird the lead. Duncan added another score with Parkhill adding the last touchdown and throwing to Gunter for two points. Morrison kicked an extra point to complete Baird's scoring. Parkhill led the defense with 20 tackles foUowed by Gunter, Dun- can, Bell, Robinsonhlohnson, and Wfilliams. BAIRD zu. BLANKET, here, 50-0, November 14. Baird played host to Blanket for the last regular season game with an offensive show of yards and scoring. Baird had 514 total yards and scored 50 points. Duncan opened the scoring and added two more later. Bums scored two touchdowns, Parkhill threw ro Gilliland for one score, and joy threw to Payne for Baird's final touchdown. Morrison added six extra points, and the defense recorded another safety to complete all the scoring. The offensive line of Bell, Gilliland, Robinson, Lynn, Hart, Morrison, and Williams had an excellent game. Robinson led the defense followed by Parkhill and Duncan. SAN TO, at Ranger, 20-0, BI-DISTRICT, November 21. Baird traveled to Ranger to compete in the Bi-District game against Santo and came our victorious 20 to 0. Baird did all of its scoring before the half with the first touchdown being scored by Duncan on a pass from Parkhill to put Baird ahead. The second touchdown was scored by Parkhill after a spectacular catch by Payne. The two point conversion was good by Parkhill giving Baird a l4 to 0 lead. After another fme reception, this time by Com, Baird was ready to score again. Parkhill went the final five yards for the score and the last of Baird's 20 points. The Baird offense accounted for 320 yds. with Parkhill gaining 226 total yds. for an excellent night. The offensive line tumed in another good game with Gilliland, Hart, and Lynn opening many holes. The defense recorded yet another shut out and was led by Robinson with thirteen tackles followed by numerous other people ro gain the victory. THROCKMORTON, at Breckenridge, 14-27, QUARTER FINALS, December 5. In a game of many ups and downs, the Cinderella season of the Baird Bears finally came to an end ar the hands of the Greyhounds. The Greyhounds opened the scoring, but Baird came back to score 14 unanswered points. Duncan opened the scoring for Baird on a two yard run. Parkhill scored the final touchdown of the season for Baird on a l-yd. rung Morrison added two extra points to complete Baird's scoring. Parkhill led the defense with twenty tackles followed by Dunmn with fourteen. The defense as a whole played well except for giving up too many big plays. Throckmorton came back to score 20 points in the second half and take them to victory by a score of 27 to 14. VALLEY, at Vcmon, I9-7, REGIONAL, November 28. Baird took the long ride to Vemon the clay after Thanksgiving to try to get their fill of Turkey. Baird was the underdog by 14 points and was playing the national record-holding quarterback in Kurt Saul. Saul had thrown 54 touchdown passes up until the Baird game. The first half was a defensive battle on the most part. Baird did move the ball but never could seem to get the ball into the end zone and went in at halftime tied 0 to 0. Baird pulled out all stops in the second half by faking a punt with a pass from Parkhill to Bums to set up the first score. Parkhill went the final one yard to give Baird an early lead. Morrison kicked the extra point for a 7 to 0 lead. One minute later, Bums caught Saul's last touchdown pass for a touchdown for Baird giving the Bears a 13 to 0 lead. Valley came back to score making it 13 to 7. Parkliill threw to Payne for the last points of the game giving Baird a 19 to 7 victory and the f'u'st Regional Cham- pionship for Baird in the history of the school. Parkhill and Bums led the team in tackles, but the whole defense should be congratulated especially Bell and Gilliland for containing Saul. Baird had 439 yds. total offense to 224 for Turkey Valley. Stacy Shanks beat teammate Ferree Foy in the finals 6-1, 6-4. In doubles action Mary Noel jones and Kamie Windham defeated Valeska Schrader and Stephanie Silba 5-7, 6-4, 6-0 to take first place. The whole team qualified for the Region II-A tournament in Abilene on April 29 and 30. They also qualified three for the state meet in Austin on May 15 and 16. Stacy Shanks won the girls' Class A singles title by defeating Dannette Holdampf of Garden City 6-0, 6-0. This was the same girl Stacy defeated for the regional championship. Mary Noel jones and Kamie Windham qualified for the state meet by winning the regional championship by defeating Fry and Bateman of Knox City 6-2, 6-3. In boys' singles, Scooter Morrison placed first by defeating Watkins of Gordon 6-3, 6-4. Chris Gulley placed third in singles by defeating Cunningham also of Gordon 6-0, 6-0. ln the doubles action it was an all Baird final. Richard Payne and Codie Parkhill defeated their teammates, Shane Deel and jim Dyer Windham 6-1, 6-1 to take first place. Morrison and both doubles teams represented Baird at the Region II-A tour- nament in Abilene on April 29-30. Vw Tennis 55 CLARK WINS SECGND AT TATE The Baird girls' golf team captured the district title for the fifth con- secutive year. The young team placed third in regional barely missing a trip to state competition. Seniors Kim Clark and Lori Voigts received medalist honors at various tournaments. Kim Clark was first medalist at district 1915, regional Q90-905 and second medalist at state with scores of 99 and 94. Lori Voigts was second medalist at district 1925, and she was third medalist at regional with scores of 91 and 94. They didn't play well at district and ended up with second place. Kelly Corn shot an 80 and received second medalist. jay Gonzales turned in an 85, followed by Eddie Neal Gunter with an 87. Russell joy shot an 89 and Brad jones closed with a 91. Baird was represented in the medalist division by Tee Barton who brought in a 92. The boys' team went on to regional and played con- siderably better. They were in first after the first day, but they slumped the next day receiving second place. On October ll, the band traveled to Abilene and received a division one in marching contest. Making the All-District band for the fourth time in high school was Carla Barron as first chair bass clarinet. Also qualifying were the following: Julie Dye, second chair contra-bassg Chris Gulley, second chair tromboneg and Laurie McKennon, eighteenth chair clarinet. Five junior high members were selected for the Junior High All-District. They were the following: james Cole was first chair bari-sax, Mica George was first chair clarinet, Lindy jones was twelfth chair clarinet, Mendy Franke was fifteenth chair clarinet, and Billy Parlchill was second chair trombone. On April 22, the band traveled to Sweetwater to compete in concert and sight reading. There they received a sweepstakes by receiving a one in both con- cert and sight reading. QNX , , UIL Literary 77 ONE-ACT PLAY WINS AT ZONE AND DISTRICT Doctor Nostradamusn was presented on March 23, 1987, at Eula High School in UIL zone competition, the one-act play was under the direction of Mrs. johnsie Allen. The play cast won at Eula and then won district on March 26, 1987, at Weatherford junior College. Doctor Nostradamusu advanced to area competition at Hardin- Simmons University on April 4, 1987. Te Howard 37 YEARS OF ERVICE A reception was held honoring Irma Crow on May 24, 1987, in the school cafeteria hosted by present and former school personnel. Mrs. Irma CYoungJ Crow retired from the Baird Schools on May 29, 1987, after having taught business subjects in Baird for 37 years. She was married to the late Frankie Crow and has one son, Richie. A native of Baird and a 1943 graduate of Baird High School, she received a B.A. degree in business in August, 1946, from North Texas State University and began teaching business in Baird in September, 1946. She did not teach from 1947 until September, 1951, when she returned to teach business and biology. Through the years she has also taught speech, served as girls' tennis coach, girls' basketball coach for 5 years, Pep Club and cheerleader sponsor, advisor of the HEADLIGHT staff for 15 years, class sponsor, Q21 years as a senior class sponsorb, BEAR FACTS staff advisor for many years, and coached many winners in UIL contests. Mrs. Crow has been active in Texas Business Education Association and Texas State Teachers Association, serving this year as president of the Callahan County Unit, She has served as Callahan County delegate to several State and National Conventions. 11985 Baird Graduate! M ' The HEADLIGHT staff and its advisor, Mr. larry Riney, designed the page layouts, photographed and recorded numerous school events and activities, compiled and edited the school yearbook for publication. The staff selected the cover design. Individual class pictures were made by Mr. Henry Cole of Cole Studio, Abilene, football and basketball pictures were made by Cathy Kincaid of Abilene. The senior class color portraits and several of the organization group pictures were made by Mr. Ford of Marquise Studio, Enid, Oklahoma. Mt. Wayne Henington of Abilene photographed the favorites at the homes of Mr. and Mrs. Maynard Gulley and Mr. and Mrs. james Paul Shanks, the favorite section is from pages 84-94, Mr. Henington also made our pictures for the Coronation located on pages 8-9. Approximately 275 copies of the 1987 edition of the HEADLIGHT were printed. The yearbooks were published by Newsfoto Yearbooks, San Angelo, Texas. Graphics counselor was Mr. Dick jacks.
