The game was closer than the 42 to 6 score as Hamlin had to pull out numerous big plays to beat the Bears. The defensive unit of Higgins, Price, Holland, Robinson, Duncan and Scott played very well despite the score. Tumovers by the Bears, eight to be exact, played a big part in the victory for the Pipers. Parkhill threw to Corn for Baird's six points, which were some ofthe few points that Hamlin gave up all year en route to the state quarterfinals. aw . 2, 'iff' .,,. - . - , - 5 L -LQ . . 1 , 'P its 5,34 ' , s so at me ,fr -at , N ,f-the .wx ,ta W ' , . Baird traveled to Cross Plains on the Saturday of the third week of the season to face the Buffaloes. The Bears found the Buffalos very fired up and ready to play, and Baird was able to sneak out with a come-from-behind victory 14 to 13. Parkhill opened the scoring on a 4-yd. run, but Cross Plains scored two quick touchdowns to take a 13 to 6 lead into the dressing room at half. The secondary of Green, Parkhill, Corn and Campbell played well in the second half to shut down the Buffalos. Duncan scored on a 4-yd. run and a two-point conversion catch by Mendez, which gave the Bears a 14 to 13 lead. The Bear defense came through in the end to block a last-second field goal attempt by Cross Plains to secure the victory. BAIRD vs. RANGER. Baird opened the district race by playing host to the Ranger Bulldogs but came out on the losing end 21 to 0. The Baird offense tumed the ball over 5 times giving the Bulldogs numerous opportunities to score. The Baird defense held the Ranger offense to only seven points in the first half, but Ranger scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to spell defeat for the Bears. BAIRD vs. ROSCOE. The second game of the season saw the Bears playing host to the state-ranked Roscoe Plowboys. The Bears played well enough to win by beating Roscoe in every category except the score board which ended with the visitors ahead 19 to 7. The offensive line of Watson, Robinson, Kanady, Price and Holland provided adequate protection and opened numerous holes, but it wasn't enough as turnovers and giving up big plays on defensive spelled defeat for the Bears. Baird opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 38-yard run by Duncan. Robinson then added the point after touchdown. BAIRD vs. WINTERS. The second week of district play saw the Bears travel- ing to Winters to play the Blizzards where they received a cold reception on a night of unusual plays. What appeared to be an early Baird touchdown turn- ed into a turnover and set the stage for the rest of the night for turnovers. The Baird offense piled up over 300 yards led by Green in rushing, but it wasn't enough as Winters won 27 to 6. Powers scored on a 80-yard catch and run from Parkhill for Baird's only score. The catch wasn't enough for a victory but atoned for a bizarre earlier play. v-f in , A zlgr , , , K K. N,gg..1. K . . Q . BAIRD vs. COLEMAN. Baird traveled to Coleman to play the district second-place team in the seventh week of the season. Very few things went right for the Bears as they came home with a loss, 56 to 8. Coleman piled up 42 points in the first half and coasted to a victory. It was one of those nights when everything went right for one team and wrong for the other. The only bright point of the night came on a 2-yard run by Campbell for a touchdown and a run for two points by Parkhill. BAIRD vs. EASTLAND. Eastland scored a quick 28 points in the first six minutes of the game and cruised to an easy victory. The Bears could not managed to score as they were shut out for the on- ly time all year on a night when not much went right for the Bears. Turnovers again plagued Baird as they had 5 in the first half and 4 in the second. Baird tried to come back in the fourth quarter, but they couldn't overcome the deficit. The final score was Eastland 61 and Baird 0. 38 BAIRD vs. JIM NED. Jim Ned came to Baird for a district ball game winless and left Baird the same way. The Bears' defense held the Indians to 73 yards rushing, while rushing for 321 yards themselves led by Campbell with 142 yards. Parkhill threw to Powers for touchdowns of 14 and 8 yards and also for a two point conversion. Campbell rushed for two touchdowns on runs of 16 and 3 yards with Robinson adding two extra points. The defense played .,, well throughout en route to their first shut-out of the year. The final score was 28 to 0. BAIRD vs. ALBANY. The eighth week of the season was pro- bably the most exciting as Baird played host to Albany. It ap- peared to be two different ball games with Albany winning the first half and Baird the second half with the game ending 22 to 18. Scott scored for Baird early and Robinson added the extra point, but Albany took an 18 to 0 lead at the half. Then the game changed tremendously, for the Bear defense only gave up 25 yards in the second half and f-83 yards rushing. The Bears also added 15 points on a touchdown run by Campbell, a kick by Robinson, and a catch by Com for 65 yards from Campbell to complete the victory. Campbell also added a two-point con- version to end the scoring. ...J BAIRD vs. CISCO. The last game ofthe season caught the Bears go- Bears Come out for the last timg- ing to Cisco to play the Lobos. Baird suited up the Varsity and Junior-Varsity as Cisco did not have a JV. The Bear offense had its best showing of the year rushing for 442 yards which was led by Campbell and Burns. The Bear defense had another good game holding the Lobos to I4 points while the Baird offense scored 39. Voigts and Pate also played well in the victory. Campbell scored twice on long runs. Burns scored twice and added a two point con- version. Robinson added an extra point also. Baird's other points were scored by Baird's version ofthe refrigerator as Higgins added a one-yard touchdown run in order to add extra excitement to the game. -- N S 41.
