CROSS PLAINS, 29-0, September 4, here, The Bears defeated the Buffs before a large Homecoming crowd. The Bears rush- ed for 132 yards, while holding the Buffs to only 42 yards rushing. ,, I M ,W I V , , I M ua, BAIRD VS. GORMAN, 21-14, September 10, there. The Bears went into the game ranked 140th in the State, while Gorman was ranked 9th in their class. The Bears were fired up and won a hard-fought game. Casey and Graham had two touchdowns each, while Moore and Rhynes led the defensive attack. PAT's were added by Mendez' kick and Tatum's and Graham's two-point conversions. f .r N K wg '- X. . ,sw Casey, Deel and Tatum shared scoring honors. Tatum added a two- point conversion, and Mendez' kick through the uprights was good. Varsity Football 37 BAIRD VS. MERKEL, 14-15, September 17, there. The Badgers kicked a 42-yard field goal with 1:41 left in the game to gain a homecoming victory over the fumble-plagued Bears. After Casey's carries for 5 and 43 yards, Tatum scored from the three in the first quarter. Mendez' PAT gave Baird a 7-6 lead. Deel scored another TD, but Merkel's second TD and FG gave them the win. Although the Bears led with 7:05 left in the first half, the angry Lions roared back with a 42- 12 win for their homecoming crowd. Baird's first 38 Varsity Football TD by Casey came after an 81-yard drive. In the second half, Deel got six more. The Bears, lone score was made with only 40 seconds left in the third quarter when QB Casey hit end Tatum with a 5-yard TD pass. The Bearettes advanced to bi-district at Brownwood where they defeated Junction in overtime, 41- 38. The Bearettes played the area game at Mineral Wells and were defeated by Boyd, 56-30. ln the Cisco tournament, the Bearettes won first place by defeating Ranger, 51-31, in the finals. Mendez, Holland, and Ringhoffer were named all-tournament. ln the Albany tournament, after defeating Merkel 43-22, they lost to Breckenridge, 49-28, and outscored Albany, 43-34, to capture the third place trophy. Mendez was nam- ed all-tournament. The Bearettes defeated Santa Anna, 41-21, in the Eula tournament and then lost to host Eula, 51-34. The girls plac- ed third by overcoming Anson, 39-29. Oddie Freehling, Doug Tuerk, Andy Ash, and Jay Moore all ran a great race at districtg this is the first time a sprint relay team from Baird has gone to regional in over fifteen years. Qualifying for the regional meet were Michael Cerda in the 1600-and 3200-meter run and Te Howard in the high jump. This was the second year Cerda and Howard have gone to regional. In the first round at State, they were defeated by Lake Travis 3-6, 3-6. Other Regional qualifiers were Alan Tatum, singles, Tresa Hatchett, singles, Tonya Tucker and Rebecca Elliott, doubles, and Jill Holland and Paula Fears, doubles. In district competition, Tatum placed second behind Anson after defeating Winters in the semifinals. Tresa Hatchett won the girls' singles title by defeating Vera of Winters, 7-6, 6-l. The finals in doubles consisted of the Tucker-Elliott doubles team and the Holland-Fears doubles team. After a tough match, Tucker and Elliott were the winners with a score of 7-5, 7-5. Kye Corn and Mike Moore placed 4th at the district meet after losing to Winters, 3-6, 4- 6. Karen Hatchett lost a close match to Albany, and Mark Allen finished 3rd after defeating Winters. The banquet was held on May 6 at the Kiva Inn in Abilene. A dance followed the banquet with the music provided by Sierra Light. Emcee for the evening was Kye Corn, president of the Junior class.
