CROSS PLAINS, 34-6 September 4, there The Bears scored 20 paints in the first quarter, scoring the first three times they had the ball. Grant scored an 66-yard TD on the first play of the game. Grant ran in a 44-yarder for another six. Casey raised the score another six on a seven- yard keeper. The Bears did not score again until the fourth quarter when Norman picked off a Cross Plains' pass and ran it 41 yards for a TD to wrap up the scoring. BAIRD VS. CISCO, 13-6 September 11, here Baird looked great, amassing 22 first downs and 334 yards rushing. In the first half, Baird took the ball inside Cisco's five-yard line three times, but were unable to punch it over. The first score came in the second half when QB Casey scored on a five-yard keeper. The second score came with 3:20 left in the game when running back Deel scored on a 15-yard run. Offensive standouts were Grant, Casey, and Deel, while the defensive stan- douts were Norman and Mendez. BAIRD VS. HA WLE Y, 22-7 September 18, there Baird won the first 1961 district 8AA game by defeating Hawley. QB Casey ran for a nineyard TD in the first period to begin Baird's scoring. Casey also passed to end Norman for a six-yard TD in the second period, and Grant ran in the two-point con- version. Grant got a six-yard TD before the half ended, and Mendez' PAT made it 21-7. Baird's on- ly score in the second half came when running back Deel ran in a four-yard TD. BAIRD VS. MERKLE, 33-7 September 25, here Merkel recovered a Baird fumble and scored four plays later. Casey scored two touchdowns and threw for two more to take the lead. Casey passed 8 yards to Norman for a TD. Later Casey teamed up with receiver Freiman for a 32-yard TD pass to give the Bears a 27-7 halftime lead. Baird's final score was by Grant. BAIRD VS. ALBANY, 31-27 October 2, there The lead changed or was tied seven times dur- ing the offensive contest. The winning TD came when QB Casey passed 7 yards to Freiman with 3121 left in the game. Perhaps the key to the game was Albany's turnovers. Baird picked off three errant Lion passes and recovered two Albany fumbles. Three of these miscues were turn- ed into points by the Bears, Late in the third quarter, Baird executed a trick play. As Baird lined up to the ball and pretended to be having an argument, Grant sneoked out on a pass pattern to score a TD. 52 Varsity Football BAIRD VS. JIM NED, 13-20 October 9, here Baird's flrst score came on an attempted fleld goal when Casey caught a pass from Grant. Mendez added another three points to the scoreboard when he kicked a 26-yard fleld goal. Baird let Jim Ned score two touchdowns to put them ahead 13-12. Mendez successfully kicked another FG to put the Bears on top, 15-12, .lim Ned drove the ball down the fleld after the klck off and scored again, but this dld not stop the determined Bears. They drove the ball down the fleld only to have the clock run out on them. BAIRD VS. WINTERS, 20-49 October 23, there Baird started the game slowly, allowing Winters to score first. Baird came back on a 16-yard pass from QB Casey to end Norman, and Mendez kick- ed the PAT. Winters scored one more TD, then Casey came back and scored another in the first half. Middle ways through the third quaner, Casey scored as he broke 56 yards on a keeper. Baird was unable to score again, allowing Winters to win the game. BAIRD VS. HAMLIN, 6-48 October 30, here The Bears played a hard-fought game against the fired-up Pied Pipers, who rolled past the Bears 46-6 to retain the district lead for Hamlin. Two Bear fumbles were costly. Baird's only score came on a 42-yard run by Grant with six minutes left in the third quarter. Defosses, Rhynes, Mendez and Griggs worked hard defensively. BAIRD VS. ANSON, 7-12 November 6, there The Bear's first score came at the end of the se- cond quarter when Casey passed 14 yards to Grant for a TD. The kick by Mendez was good, and the score was 7-0. The Bears led until the fourth quarter when Anson scored with three minutes re- maining. Defosses had 28 tackles, and assists to lead the defense, while the offensive leaders were Grant and Casey. BAIRD vs. Romlv, 6-45 November 13, here Baird had another tough time with the Yellowhammers. The Bears were unable to keep up with them. Baird scored on a 51-yard pass from quarterback Casey to Grant in the third quarter. Baird tried for a two-point conversion instead of an extra point attempt and was successful.
