IAHDBMH 3 'PF X' fix. 1 Members of the Class of 1929 who attended the homecoming in September were Willard Kelton, Lucibel Mitchell Manion, Glenn McGowen Wylie, Edith Hammons Hunt, Donna McGowen Leon, Thelma Boatwright Smith, Leotis Bennett Meadows, R. L. Elliott, Ir., Harry Dunlap, Curtis Sutphen, Beatrice Green Deal, Bill Wright, Fonda Hughes Brown, Stephen Warren, Dr. Weldon Varner, Vermon Iohnson, and, not pictured, Dorothy Barnhill Parsons. The custom of publishing a year- book for Baird Schools began fifty years ago. The first staff in 1928-29 headed by Vermon Iohnson, editor, and Weldon Varner, business man- ager, hoped to establish an unbro- ken chain. However, there were no yearbooks published during the depression and war years of 1932, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1937, 1938, and 1943. THE HEADLIGHT was selected as the name of the annual in honor of the railroad, the city's former great- est asset and builder. The Texas and Pacific Railway selected Baird as one of the railway's division ter- minals, which led to the establish- ment of Baird as the county seat of Callahan County. In 1929, THE HEADLIGHT was dedicated to Mrs. W. C. White, a teacher of history for many years in the Baird Schools, and to Miss Win- ifred Camp, teacher of English and the first sponsor of THE HEAD- LIGHT. The 1979 HEADLIGHT staff salutes the Class of 1929 on this fifti- eth anniversary. l Above: Maude McGowen Cunningham, Class of '29, looks approvingly at her grandaughter, Lydia Hardwick, Class of '79 and a cheer- leader at Baird High School. Left: Principal Gerald Iennings accepts a copy of the 1929 annual from Vermon Iohnson, edi- tor of the first yearbook. Looking on is Ben Stephenson, 1978 president of the Exes' Asso- ciation.
