TOMORROW WILL COME Th1s IS an occas1on of sorrow and reJo1c1ng An occasion of sorrow because 1n th1s hour we term1nate the pleasures of the years of our scholast1c fellowslnp as a class xn th1s school An occas1on of reJo1c1ng because 1n th1s hour we enter upon a new f1eld of ach1evement For some of us the 1mmed1ate future offers us the advantages of college tra1n1ng for others there w1ll be the entrance 1mmed1ate1y 1nto the world of economxcs Whatever tomorrow br1ngs for any of us th1s we know that th1s our commencement IS a partmg of the ways Today marks the ach1evement of certam resolves wh1ch we have held 1n our m1nds across the last four years Resolves wh1ch were born 1n our m1nds when we began to real1ze the 1ncreas1ng opportun1t1es Wh1Ch were ours 1n this our educat1on These resolves were not so strong nor were they so clear several years ago as they became of late F1rSt they were rather nebulous and somewhat ethereal but now w1th the perspect1ve of the past few years work accompl1shed they have become qu.1te clear So xt IS that today our resolves have come to have a new and meanmgful s1gn1f1cance 1n our th1nk1ng In them we see some of our asp1rat1ons real1zed wh11e as yet there rema1ns a sense of h1gh destxny Wh1Ch 1S ours to fulf1ll m the new world wh1ch IS now open1ng to us We are 1ndeed apprec1at1ve of all of this wh1ch our educat1on has brought to us ln the course of these four years of endeavor of sacr1f1ce of struggle and of test And It IS only too true that 1n the future we shall Wlth an xncreasmng apprec1at1on look back upon these years w1th a very deep sense of reverence Here we have learned to study Here we have learned to laugh Here we have learned to suffer Here we have learned to cons1der our place 1n a great and cont1nu1ng democracy Indeed above everyth1ng here we have learned to begm to l1ve If only the latter were true, It would const1tute the most s1gn1f1cant th1ng ga1ned mn these years Wlthln these halls of learnmg We are assured 1n our m1nds that the ach1evement then of th1S IS what all of you people most des1re for us In f.h1S we not only succeed for our selves but we l1kew1se Just1fy your faxth lh us your sacr1f1ces made on our behalf and your pat1ent encouragement of all our resolves It IS true that we do not know now many th1ngs 1n wh1ch the years w1ll 1nstruct us and lxke St Paul we at present see through a glass darkly However we are conf1dent that what we have now gamned w1ll enable us to better mterpret the th1ngs we shall learn 1n the future Often we have heard the charac ter1st1c democrat1c slogan L1ve and let l1ve But we feel that our task 1n l1fe demands more of us than that and so we ded1cate ourselves to the pursmt of the task whxch IS best 1nterpreted by the slogan L1ve and help l1ve ln the latter motto IS our challenge and the hope of our ach1evement So xn th1s hour of our part1ng we know the certa1nty of the d1rect1on 1n Wh1Ch we are goxng we are conf1dent that our resolves w1ll be accompl1shed and we are assured that our efforts w1ll not go unrewarded but that the success wh1ch we seek w1ll be measured out to us accord1ng to our ach1evements As has been so well sa1d Lwes of great men all remmd us, We can make our lzves subl1me And depart1ng leave behmd us Footpr1nts on the sands of t1me L11l1an Sander s McLemore Valedzctonan o , . . . . . . . 1 . . . . . . . . THE OPEN DOOR Frxends and Schoolmates Truly, in this hour of commencement we are not closmg a door upon what ll now past but rather we are opemng a door that w1ll lead us xnto new areas of l1fe And xt IS xn these new areas of hvlng that we anticxpate practxcmg the very prm c1ples wh1ch we have been 1earn1ng the past four years Now are we ready to buxld the house of character for wh1ch so long we have been lay1ng four-dat1ons The success whxch we seek and the success wh1ch we shall ach1eve w1ll be due largely to our recogmtxon of the mherent values of the truths wh1ch we have learned mn these years of our preparat1on for world cxtxzenshxp Ours 15 the task 1n the world of tomorrow to brmg to fulfmll ment all of the dreams and ambxtlons wh1ch we have held m our mmds and wh1ch we belxeve to be essent1a1 xn enablxng men to l1ve 1n an ordered and peaceful world We concezve of our educat1on as a prwxlege afforded us to become the competent servants of a world 1n wh1ch we feel that we have not only a place but also a destmy to fulfxll As a class of world servants we wzll cons1der no task as ever bexng beneath our d1gn1ty and we w1ll dare to belxeve that every task merxts our absolute s1ncer1ty and challenges our personal competencmes to ach1eve It We w1ll not shxrk respons1b1l1ty but rather we w1ll seek xt we w11l not turn from labor but we w1ll pursue xt Whatever may be the nature of the responsxbllltxes wh1ch come to us we are now ready to assume them and to dxscharge them to the very best of our ab1l1t1es To do less than th1s would be to break faxth w1th th1s our Alma Mater and brmg d1sgrace upon our ldeals of serv1ce To th1s end we pledge ourselves mmdful of the world of wxsdom wh1ch declare that whosoever heareth these saymgs and doeth them w1ll be lxkened unto a w1se man who buxlt h1s house upon a rock and the ram descended and the floods came and the wmds blew and beat upon that house and It fell not for It was founded upon a rock To you, our parents who have made poss1ble th1s our educat1on we thank you to you our lnstructors who have d1l1gently apphed yourselves to the task of teach1ng us we thank you and to all who have made th1s educat1onal pr1v1lege our possess1on we salute you w1th gratltude Lena Panter Salutatorlan ' 1 1 ' ' ' 1 1 1 u 1 . . - 1 1 1 . 1 u - , ' 1 1 . . . . . . 1 p 1 1 . 1 1 I! . , 1 g 1 1 u . . . . 1 1 1 1 1 , .
