AJ' If-L-------' - Just as a farmer must be constantly alert as to what is going on around his area which might affect his opera- tions, present or future, so must the Captain of a carrier have available such information for the proper con- duct of his ship. The four sections of the Operation Intelligence Division are the eyes and ears for obtaining and retaining the necessary facts. The Sonar group is skilled in under- water sound detection-a function im- portant to the protection of a ship- particularly a carrier. Forewarned is forearmed. The Radar group is schooled in the operation of radar equipment. lt is the function of this section to afford radio detection and range and to know ---' at all times who or what is in the im- mediate area within horizontal limits. These items are im- portant to the farmer and vitally so to a ship at sea. The OR Division of the Bing Ding works twenty-four hours a day copying the fleet broadcast from which it obtains valuable information with re- gard to enemy movements, friendly movements' and weather data, all of which are of immediate concern. The Bing Ding is the flagship of a carrier division, therefore the work of the OR Division greatly increases while in the operating area, since all information re- ceived or sent via radio is handled by the OR Division. Despite a heavy opera. tional schedule, time was found by this division to copy additional circuits in order to obtain press news for the daily paper. Aboard ship, the arrival of the daily paper is anticipated with the same interest as it is on the farm, as in both cases it is contact with a world apart. ' Left to right, front rank: R. D.
