The Bing Ding sometimes has work for a windmill too. The officially named Detach- ment Five of Helicopter Squadron One, the men of this Division are usually referred to as The Windmill Boys. Members of the Division are resigned to the good-natured heckling they receive. They know that Clementine, as the helicopter is affectionately called, can be worth her weight in gold. The safety record of VMF 323 left no opportunity for Clementine to dem- onstrate her air-sea-rescue ability while in the operating area. Administrative and utility work occupied her time. The man-hours saved in the transfer of personnel, U.S. Mail, and spare parts through the use of the windmill contraption was a small cog in the smooth running efficiency with which the Bing Ding performed her operational tasks. These items are im- portant to the farmer and vitally so to a ship at sea. The OR Division of the Bing Ding works twenty-four hours a day copying the fleet broadcast from which it obtains valuable information with re- gard to enemy movements, friendly movements' and weather data, all of which are of immediate concern. The Bing Ding is the flagship of a carrier division, therefore the work of the OR Division greatly increases while in the operating area, since all information re- ceived or sent via radio is handled by the OR Division. Despite a heavy opera. tional schedule, time was found by this division to copy additional circuits in order to obtain press news for the daily paper. Aboard ship, the arrival of the daily paper is anticipated with the same interest as it is on the farm, as in both cases it is contact with a world apart. ' Left to right, front rank: R. D. Dn the farm, self pres- ervation is won by constant vigilance against predatory animals, planning for every possible contingency and by careful inventory and intimate knowlu edge of the tools of the land. On the Bing Ding, the Gunnery Department has the two-fold function to perform -to fight the ship and to utilize their particular skills of seamanship so that the ship is ready to fight. Within the framework of the Gunnery Department are four distinct divisions. The F Division is composed of Gunners Mates and Fire Controlmen who maintain the ship's fighting tools and have charge of the magazines and armory. The other three divisions are made up of Bos'n Mates and men striking for Bos'n ratings. To these men go the duties relating to seamanship. They perform the thousand and one jobs connected with mooring the ship, re- fueling at sea, handling of small boats, transfer of personnel at sea, the gen- eral cleanliness of the ship, and the care of Iifeboats and rafts. .-1.-Q--,Q:g,.-L13f.fc41f'..:2gae,LF4,','i '-'iv-fl-1i'H-'L M rv .pf 4 l 9 i l is lo l l X F' 9 0 X b v ET' F gf . I-leufenunf lbclf U-s-N- Man's conquest and control ot disease has always been one ot his greatest challenges, calling torth every diagno-stic, analytic and inventive slcill. Moving steadily toward the great goal ot the obliteration ot disease, Medical Science has used a three-way approach to achieve its ends: llj preventive medicine, l2j proper and adequate treatment ot in- juries and illness, l3j constant research. Since we live in a controlled community aboard the Badoeng Strait, the Medical and Dental Departments have had an unusual o-pportunity to exercise preventive medicine through sanitation control, edu- cati-on and innoculation. Through their su- perbly trained medical and dental statts and the best ot tacilities, proper and complete treatment ot injuries and illness is assured, and through the laboratory aboard ship, valuable data tor research is constantly collected, analyzed and disseminated. That the above is mo-re than theory is demonstrated by the tact that during an extremely ditticult and hazardous op- erational year the ship has not had a single epidemic, not o-ne death trom in- jury or illness suttered aboard shi and F9 an amazingly low record ot man-days lost through illness. The health and well being of all living things on a farm are one of the primary concerns of the farm operator and one on which he must rely upon the assistance of trained personnel beyond the confines of his boundaries. On the Bing Ding, the skilled services ofthe H Division are valuable. The division, though small, is composed of trained medi- cal and dental technicians, who assist the Doctor and Dentist. The men of this division keep the health records of every man on the ship, assist in caring for patients in sick- bay, the giving of innoculations and vaccinations, and in the administer- ing of anaesthetics when required.
