THE HATCHETS BOAST A GOOD SEASON The 1958 edition of the “Hatchets” showed an outstanding “will to win” which brought the home team a second place finish in the strong Thumb B Conference. With a completely new backfield, and only two returning regulars from 57 in the line, the “Hatchets” helped Bay City St. Stans dedicate a new field. After a 20-0 deficit at half time, the Hatchets came back to make it a 20-12 victory for the “Stags”. This game ended the losing habit as the Bad Axe team moved on to six straight league victories. High on the list of achievements in these six victories was the power running of Steve Walzak and Bill Lackie, the outside running of Jerome Smith and the fine passing of Fred Barckholtz, quarterback, to Bill Tageson, left end, and Gerald Beaver, left half. Up front, center John Baslock, earned second team all league honors; Barry Eden played inspired ball as did our two outstanding junior tackles, Bob Smithers and “Moe” Holz. Larry Schelke appeared to be the most unheralded member of the team, but did great work - especially as a defensive left half. Big 270 pound John Gucwa was a colorful and consistent performer as a middle guard on defense. Also on defense, Len Golding proved to be near the finest defensive end in the conference. The “Hatchets”, however, would have been only mediocre without the services of All League and All Saginaw Area Guard, Captain Jim Gage. Jim proved to be a continued inspiration to his teammates, the squad’s most fierce blocker, and the leading tackier on the team. Coach Marsh FIRST ROW, Left to Right: P. Kelly, R. McDonald, T. With all die 1957-58 regulars graduated, the Hatchets were left floundering with novice players. However, a spark of satisfaction was felt when this year's team ended up with a better win-loss record than that of 1957-58. The squad owes much to captain Bill Tageson, the season high scorer and free throw trophy award winner. With only seniors Len Golding and Duke Osentoski leaving, the 1959-60 team should be further up in the league standings. The first nine, consisting of 2 sophomores, 3 juniors and 4 seniors, were a well knit group that didn’t crack under pressure. The seniors led the players in hitting, culminated by a .426 batting average for John Blackstock. Bill Lackie was the bellwether of the pitching staff winning 8 and losing 2. John Baslock caught most of the games, while handyman Fred Barckholtz spelled him. Sorely missed in the ’59 season will be the seniors: John Blackstock. 2b; Terry Tageson, lb; John Guigar, ss; Jim Stern- berg, cf.
