FOOTBALL DEFENSIVE SQUAD LEFT RO RIGHT: Ken Johnston, Bob Ge- bauer, Harold Becking, Roy Chumbler. COMMENTARY The 1955 gridders showed but one regular, Charles Morris, returning from the previous year’s championship eleven. An indication of things to come occurred in the opening game against Bay City when Morris suffered an ankle injury that would keep him out of three games, and two t.d.’s were nullified in a 19-19 tie game. With Haldane, G. Pangborn and Morris out of the lineup, Sandusky » fine line captured the Hatchets off balance and handed the locals their first shutout in seven years. Back on our own gridiron, the tide turned, thanks to an 87-yard touchdown jaunt by Haldane and excellent running by Sommerfeld. Marlette gave Bad Axe a great deal of difficulty for one half, but then succumbed to the bull- like thrusts of fullback Gary Pangborn and a five yard sprint by 270 pound Bob Gebauer. Haldane also turned in a nice 35-yard run for a t.d., but the referee thought Pangborn had been halted back at the line of scrimmage and discounted the tally. Cass City had its hands full before it handed Bad Axe its second loss for the year, 7-0. The team’s finest halfback was put out for the year when Bill Haldane broke an ankle early in the first quarter. Two Sophomores starred in our Cros-Lex game as Dave Laidlaw averaged 20 yards per carry, and quarterback Jim Sternberg passed with pinpoint precision only to have his receivers drop many vital passes. League Champion Yale displayed a tremendous ground attack and snowed under the Hatchets 32-0 and our year ended on a happy note with a 19-14 victory over Caro with Archie McDonald and Owen Sommerfeld running well, and Jerry Brown and Charles Morris performing well on defense.
