In his first year as a quarterback, he pi- loted his team to seven wins and one tie, completed 15 of 51 passes and gained 18 yards in 92 tries. Halfback Ron Rogers gained 470 yards in 44 tries, averaging 7 yards per try. Fullback Bob Case gained 1,132 yards and had a ten yard per try average. Halfback Don Ney, 451 yards in 36 tries for a seven yard average. Ney missed a game and a half because of an injury. He was voted the most improved player by his teammates. All boys are seniors. Bad Axe defensive t e a m. Combined efforts of all the H a t c h e t s' opponents gained but 795 yards on the ground against this team. FOOTBALL Larry Essenmacher, 6'5 , 230 pound cen- ter. Essenmacher was a unanimous choice for the Thumb B All-Conference team. He was voted four All State honors. Es- senmacher was voted to three All State teams, class B division, in polls held by the Detroit Times, the Associated Press and the Detroit Free Press. He received honorable mention in the United Press poll. Coaches: STANDING, Left to Right, Coach Erv Ignash and Oarie Lemanski. Lemanski, a Senior, helped coach the team this year. In front is Head Coach Claude Marsh. Both Coach lgnash and Coach Marsh have been coaching at Bad Axe for six years. During the six years, Coach Marsh's teams have won 35 and lost nine. They have two ties. Coach Marsh's teams have never finished lower than fourth place. They won the championship twice, finished second twice, took third place once and came in fourth in the league one year, Robert Case, Hatchets' hard-running full- back, gained 1,132 yards on the ground, aver- aging ten yards per try, He was voted the Hatchets' most valuable player and received the Robert Reid Memorial Trophy for leadership, sportsmanship and scholastic ability. He was voted the team's most improved player in 1953, Case was a unanimous choice for the Thumb B All-Conference team and was voted All-State back, class B division, in the United Press poll.
