SENIOR HISTORY In 1950, eighty-four freshman entered Bad Axe High School.- These freshman took the name of the class of 54 . As we became settled we first elected the following officers: President, Wilford Bowrong Vice-President, Bill Armstrongg Shirley Cook was elected as Secretary, Dick Mason as Treasurer, and Dick Palm as Student Council Representative. Our sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Richard Lynch. ln this year the class of 54 sponsored a Christmas decoration sale, and dances which helped the class treasury greatly. At the close of the school year we journeyed to the shores of Lake Huron for our first class picnic. As we entered school in the fall of 1951, we were Sophomores. Our class election of officers was held with Dick Mason as President, Bob Nichol, Vice-Presidentg Doris Trepkoski, Secretary: and Mary Haller, Treasurer: and Romona Bucholtz as Class Representative. Sponsors for this year were Mrs. Phillips and Mr. Ignash. The first social event sponsored was the party to welcome the freshmen. We had concessions for two home football games, some dances, and an outdoor party, which added to the class fund. Our class picnic rounded out the activities for the year, After entering the Junior year we again took time out to elect the following class officers: President, Dick Masong Vice-President, Jerry Sullivan: Secretary, Doris Trepkoski, Treasurer, Shirley Cook, and Class Representative, Wilford Bowron. This year we were under the guiding hands of Mr. and Mrs. Harley Stoner. A magazine sale that winter proved to be the most successful in the history of the school. Another successful event was the annual J-Hop. The theme we choose was Harvest Moon and a Harvest king and queen were crowned. The Junior play, Mother is a Freshman , acomedy with three acts, was presented with one cast under the direction of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dodge. We also sponsored after game dances and sold refreshments at games. At the end of this busy year we took time out to visit and swim on the shores of Lake Huron at our last class picnic. Entering upon our final year, the last journey of the class of 54 was in view. This year we became known as Seniors. First we sponsored the Sadie Hawkins Dance. Next came our Senior pictures and our Senior play, The Case of the Missing Heirs . Mrs. Pearl Olson was the director, and the play was presented with double cast. This play was a great success and it added more money towards our Senior trip. Again we launched another magazine sale, which helped our class a great deal. Other doings we undertook were checking of coats, selling refreshments, sponsoring after the game dances, and completed our Christmas project for the Chamber of Commerce. Our biggest events of the year was theChristmas Banquet, with Silver Bells as the theme. Our greatest event of the year was our Senior prom held in April. Our last all-wise leaders that were elected in the fall of 53 to guide us through our last year were: Wilford Bowron, Presidentg Jerry Sullivan, Vice-President, Doris Trepkoski, Secretaryg Shirley Cook and Gail Ternes as Treasurers, and Student Council Representative, Dick Mason. Our faithful sponsors during our Junior and Senior year were Mr. and Mrs. Harley Stoner. In June of 54 as school was coming to a close, our class left good old Bad Axe High for our eight-day Senior trip to New York and Washington D. C. We had a wonderful time with you Bad Axe High, and you will live in our memory forever. Graduation came June, 1954 and our class received their diplomas and departed from our four years at Bad Axe High. SUMMARY OF GAMES With one backfield man and two linemen from the 1952 championship team returning, the Bad Axe gridders started off very successfully by overpowering Harbor Beach 55-0. Bob Case scored three times, Tom Rapson twice. Marlene proved to be a rough customer before the locals put them away 24- l. A very spirited CassCity club severely tested the Hatchets but to no avail as the home club won 13-7. Outstanding defensive work was performed by Ron Rogers and Oarie Lemanski. Cros-Lex appeared quite inept against a charged-up Bad Axe eleven, and ended up with a total gain on the ground of 25 yards and one first down. Touchdowns were made by Rogers, 2, and Kervin 2 on outstanding catches. Final score 31-0. A repeat 31-0 win over Yale brought Bad Axe's winning streak to 14 games. This time a weak Yale squad showed little opposition as the entire Hatchet squad played at one time or another. The big game of the year featured a spirited Caro team over-powering Bad Axe 35-18. The local boys were off their usual performance and so ended a fine winning streak. TD's were made in this contest by Rapson and Case. A quick rebound found the I-Iatchets winning a very close battle with Sandusky 13-7. Lemanski completed two touchdown passes to Jim Kervin and Jerry Hynek. The season's finale was an offensive masterpiece for the home town boys as they handled a tough Vasser Squad 37-0. Scorers for Bad Axe were Case, Rapson, Kervin and Chumbler. It was a fine team victory and gave Bad Axe an excellent record for 1953. BASKETBALL FIRST TEAM BACK ROW: Coach Marsh, Tom Rapson, Bob Case, Bill Haldane, Coach Ignash.
