Students majoring in those areas found themselves plunged into a rigorous schedule of study, classes and trips to clinical sites. A highlight of the year for the nursing department was news that it received a full live-year accreditation from the Oklahoma Board of Nursing Registration and Nursing Education. The OBNRNE approved conti- nuing Bacone's accreditation at a meeting Dec. 6, 1985, ac- cording to Billie Tower, chairperson of the Division of Health Sciences at the college. The Bacone nursing program received commendation for its administration, faculty and students. The development and implementation of the Career Advancement for Practical Nurses program, which assists licensed practical nurses in ad- vancing to the associate degree level, was also praised by the board. Bacone's nursing program is the oldest associate degree pro- gram in the state. Last summer, 86 percent of the Bacone of graduates passed state board examinations, according to Mrs. Tower. McAlester Regional Medical Center became the newest clinical site accredited for radiologic technology students from Bacone College. McAlester is the fourth hospital in the region to accept radiological technology students from Bacone. Muskogee Regional Medical Center, Tahle- quah City Hospital and Hastings Hospital in Tahlequah are also affiliated with the program. Students also participate in clinical studies at the Muskogee Radiological Group. Health Sciences 81 M The Division of Humanities and Communications offered studies in art, drama, English, humanities, journalism, music, reading, religion and speech. The Bacone art department has been long recognized as a leader in the education of Indian artists. The department offered students classes in drawing, painting, print making, sculp- ture, and bronzecasting. 82 HumanitiesfCommunications Communications 'M!!! 'M' A3 57 ::vu z:5f:::: . Humanities and religion courses were an important component of Baconeis traditional liberal arts curriculum. This area of study continues the coIIege's commitment to providing a Christian education. English, speech, reading and jour- nalism areas offered students courses in various forms of communications. The journalism department experienced growth in both the print and broadcasting areas. Eight microcomputers, including an IBM XT were installed for students in journalism classes. In the broadcasting area, a radio pro- duction console and other equipment was donated to the journalism department by KAYI QK-1071 radio. The new equip- ment gave radio broadcasting students hands-on experience with the tools of the trade. Computers were also incorporated into the reading program at Bacone. I saw a note on a bulletin board that said positions were available in the Faculty Loan Program, so I applied, Stephen explained. My wife, Pat, is a teacher, so I have been interested in educa- tion for a long time, Stephen said. His wife taught fourth grade at Longmont, which is near Boulder. Stephen was one of several In- ternational Business Machines executives participating in the IBM Faculty Loan Program at colleges and universities nation- 88 IBM Loan Executive wide. Since the program began in 1971, more than 500 employees have been loaned at full pay to 14-0 participating institutions. The experience has been really good, Stephen said. Pat and I have enjoyed it a lot. The neat thing is when a student learns something or seems interested. Stephen taught Introduction to Data Processing, Basic I and PASCAL. Mrs. Stephen was also involved in the classroom at Bacone, serving as a lab assis- tant for her husband's classes and in the Business Division's computer science lab and taught a course in Basic I. The Stephens worked with about 70 students in the com- puter science lab, teaching both morning and evening sections. The diversity of students in ages or ethnic background is one of the things Stephen enjoys about teaching at Bacone. While at Bacone, the Stephens lived in campus housing. At the end of the school year, they returned to their home in Boulder. This has been a very rewarding experience. I have en- joyed teachng and have enjoyed meeting the people here. The students, faculty and staff have been very friendly and out- going, he said. -1- 2 Y I 'rv +1 'my 1. nouc AND PAT STEPHEN IBM Faculty Loan 89 w..,s 5 1. Scott Peck J.R.R. Tolkien Dee Richardson Charles Dickens Shuttle Tragedy Shocks Nation For the overwhelming majority ,of the students surveyed, the most important news event of the school year was the space shuttle Challenger', tragedy. Like millions of other Americans, Baconians watched television replays in disbelief as, again and again, the network newscasts replayed the liftoff. It started out as so many shuttle launches in the pastihave, a thunderous roar, a majestic liftoff, and the cheers of spectators at the Kennedy Space Center. Across the coun- try, school children were tuned in to watch the launch because one of the astronauts, Christa McAuliffe, a New Hampshire school teacher, was sched- uled to teach lessons in space science from earth orbit. Then, a few seconds into the flight, came the explosion. Many of us watched and waited, hoping to see a damaged shuttle limp out of the cloud of smoke and head for a crash landing in the Atlantic. But, that never happened. The Challenger was gone, along with its crew of seven, which included McAuliffe, Frances R. Scobee, Michael J. Smith, Judith Resnik, Ronald E. McNair, Ellison Onizuka, and Gregory B. Jarvis. The nation moumed the loss in a way reminiscent of the outpouring of na- tional grief that followed the assasination of President John F. Kennedy. Investigations into the cause of the ex- plosion at the time this book went to press centered on the right solid fuel rocket booster, and the decision-making process that led to the launch despite freezing temperatures in Florida on launch day. Whatever the cause, the loss was a bit- ter reminder that many times the search for knowledge has a very high and ex- acting cost. 96 Challenger 1. LOCAL newspapers told the tragic story. 2. Dedication 1 1 1 Memoriam David Williams David Williams, well-known artist and alumnus of Bacone College died Nov. 8 at a Tulsa hospital. Williams, a full-blood Indian of the Kiowa, Apache and Tonkawa tribes, was one of the Hrst induetees into the Bacone College Hall of Fame in 1 983 . He attended Fort Sill Indian School and Bacone. He began his career in art under guidance of Dick West. His depictions of the Plains Indian brought him worldwide acclaim and many awards. Williams was very active in the Indian community. He was especially fond of working with young people, teaching Indian songs and customs. He was welcome at the drum at Indian gatherings where ever he went. Williams was always willing and ready to help the Bacone Indian Club and the Native American Student Association at Northeastern State University, and he was ohen called upon for advice and guidance. Not only did the world lose an artist with a special and irreplaceable talent, but also an enthusiastic and caring teacher of Indian ways. 1 12 In Memoriam 13 As the year ends, each of us are reminded of the happy times that made 1986 special. We spent time talking in the student center, pulling pranks, going to ball games and dances, and overall we had fun. Oh sure, we spent many late night hours studying for tests and finishing homework assignments, but we usual- ly managed to have a good time. Wt '. o Q , fr wg l V 'em i e f v W- ?
