A f , Warriors Rebuild With Young Talent lt was a rebuilding year for coach Mike Hayes' Warriors basketball squad. Only Otis Booker returned from last season, with the rest of the roster filled out with fresh- man players. Even with a young squad, the Warriors were playing better as a team by mid- season. With three games left in the season, the War- riors' record stood at 12-15, after slipping into a slump that was only broken by a Homecom- ing win over Oklahoma City Southwest. One of the team's main problems was a lack of consistency, a problem Hayes hopes will go away as his team matures. While it may be a sports cliche to say that things may be looking better next season, when the 1981-82 Warriors take the court it should be an experienced group, who knew some success as freshmen. Fellcla Warren mirrors the intensity the Lady Warriors brought to the court. Lady Warriors Basketball Lady Warriors Show Improvement The 1980-81 basketball season of the Lady Warriors was marked by significant and positive improvement, as team and individual performances improved. At the end of January, the Lady Warriors had posted a 2-4 conference record and an overall record of 6-17. An all freshmen team, the Bacone squad was rebounding better, playing with more intensity and court savvy, and most importantly, cutting down on mental mistakes, said coach Nick Durant. Individual performances became evident. Felicia Warren was hitting 91 percent from the foul line and 43 percent. Sandra Sands, shooting at 44 percent, was the Lady Warriors' most consistent player. Sheila Brooks, with a 10 percent per game average, helped con- tribute to a more positive outlook on the team. Tracy Peacock's aggressive play was notable on the boards and with steals. Vanessa Phillips was shooting at 10 percent per game and had 98 rebounds and 54 steals to her credit. Above Left: Tina Matlock and Sheila Brooks defend. Left: Sandra Sands passes down court. After a successful fall scrimmage schedule in which Bacone took on and defeated teams from the district and some four-year schools, the pro- spects for a spring campaign were bright. The Warriors looked to have all the ingredients for a winning team, especially balance in key areas, Leafer said. Our pitching, hitting, and defense should be good. We have quite a bit of speed and a little bit of power, Leafer said. Above Left: Jamie Bear fields a line drive in a scrimmage game against Northeastern State University. Right: Students, faculty and staff sing America the Beauti- ful on the steps of Wacoche Hall. Hostage Release Bell Ringing Signaled End of Iran Crisis The Bacone Victory Bell was sounded to celebrate the announce- ment, January 20, that 52 Americans, who had been held hostage for 444 days by Iranian terrorists, were at last being freed. Students, faculty and staff turned out on the wintry gray morning and watched as Raul Rodriguez rang the bell 52 times, once for each freed dip- lomat. Then the crowd sang America the Beautiful. The ceremony was like thousands of other expressions of thanksgiving made that day around the nation. lt was as if the whole country sighed in collective relief that the long ordeal was over.
