KACOfflAN 1983 Zhe official yearbook of . . . Bacon Academy under construction in Colchester, Connecticut PIERPOINT BACON was born in Middletown in 1724, and moved to Colchester at the age of twenty-one. He was a poor laborer who worked building houses. After six years of saving twenty cents daily, he bought 800 acres of land in the southern section of Colchester. Pierpoint was an intelli- gent man, active in politics, yet withdrawn. He lived alone on a farm to hide a physical disability. Pierpoint needed a housekeeper, so he married. No children came out of the marriage. Pierpoint did not save his money knowing beforehand that he would donate it towards the building of a school. The idea occured to him a few months before his death. He left over $35,000 so that his name would be carried on. He requested that the school, bearing his name, be close to the church, free to all children in Colchester, and teach reading, writing, and arithmetic. Bacon Academy was built in 1803 and quickly became the best school in New England. Many of the students enrolled were tuition paying and came from all over the United States. There have been many famous alumnus of Bacon Academy: Steven Austin- founder of Texas William Buckingham and Morgan Bulkeley- former governors of Connecticut Lyman Trumbull- former governor of Illinois Edwin Morgan- former governor of New York William Larrabee- former governor of Iowa Morrison Waite- Chief of Justice of the United States Supreme Court Issac Crary- founder of the University of Michigan

You saw teachers 180 days during the year, but did you really know them? Most of the teachers not only stay the required time after school, but also devote time to clubs, organizations, and sports. These teachers really care for their students’ success and will do anything to help them. How can we ever thank them for all they have given us: knowledge, hope, and friendship? The Class of 1983, therefore, has decided to dedicate this year’s Baconian to all the teachers who have helped to make these four years at Bacon memorable ones. A special thanks goes to Mrs. Freedman for everything she went through as an advisor for the Class of 1983. All of the aggravation of waiting for students to bring in their candle money and their ornament money (did they ever?). H e can’t forget the exciting pancake breakfast and the spaghetti dinner! It’s a good thing she was there to show the guys how to boil water for the spaghetti. H e owe her apprecia- tion for putting up with the rowdy class meetings, we couldn’t have gotten anything done if she hadn’t. We thank her for helping in every way to make our prom a memorable event. We know how much she looks forward to her year off after years of being a class advisor, but we hope that the class of 1983 will be one that will be remembered by her as “one of a kind’’. Indeed, we as a class, will always remember Mrs. Freedman not only as our advisor, but as a close friend. 2
