KACOfflAN 1983 Zhe official yearbook of . . . Bacon Academy under construction in Colchester, Connecticut PIERPOINT BACON was born in Middletown in 1724, and moved to Colchester at the age of twenty-one. He was a poor laborer who worked building houses. After six years of saving twenty cents daily, he bought 800 acres of land in the southern section of Colchester. Pierpoint was an intelli- gent man, active in politics, yet withdrawn. He lived alone on a farm to hide a physical disability. Pierpoint needed a housekeeper, so he married. No children came out of the marriage. Pierpoint did not save his money knowing beforehand that he would donate it towards the building of a school. The idea occured to him a few months before his death. He left over $35,000 so that his name would be carried on. He requested that the school, bearing his name, be close to the church, free to all children in Colchester, and teach reading, writing, and arithmetic. Bacon Academy was built in 1803 and quickly became the best school in New England. Many of the students enrolled were tuition paying and came from all over the United States. There have been many famous alumnus of Bacon Academy: Steven Austin- founder of Texas William Buckingham and Morgan Bulkeley- former governors of Connecticut Lyman Trumbull- former governor of Illinois Edwin Morgan- former governor of New York William Larrabee- former governor of Iowa Morrison Waite- Chief of Justice of the United States Supreme Court Issac Crary- founder of the University of Michigan You saw teachers 180 days during the year, but did you really know them? Most of the teachers not only stay the required time after school, but also devote time to clubs, organizations, and sports. These teachers really care for their students’ success and will do anything to help them. How can we ever thank them for all they have given us: knowledge, hope, and friendship? The Class of 1983, therefore, has decided to dedicate this year’s Baconian to all the teachers who have helped to make these four years at Bacon memorable ones. A special thanks goes to Mrs. Freedman for everything she went through as an advisor for the Class of 1983. All of the aggravation of waiting for students to bring in their candle money and their ornament money (did they ever?). H e can’t forget the exciting pancake breakfast and the spaghetti dinner! It’s a good thing she was there to show the guys how to boil water for the spaghetti. H e owe her apprecia- tion for putting up with the rowdy class meetings, we couldn’t have gotten anything done if she hadn’t. We thank her for helping in every way to make our prom a memorable event. We know how much she looks forward to her year off after years of being a class advisor, but we hope that the class of 1983 will be one that will be remembered by her as “one of a kind’’. Indeed, we as a class, will always remember Mrs. Freedman not only as our advisor, but as a close friend. 2 Graduation is rapidly approaching Where have all the years gone? It seems just yesteryear That we were freshmen entering Bacon. As freshmen we had to memorize the Baconian Or we could have brushed up on “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star It was a good thing for many of us That the initiation wasn’t carried out. We then started our first big fund raiser By selling candles. In our sophomore year we put on a pancake breakfast. Some of our chefs went overboard and ended up Peeling batter off the ceiling of the home-ec room. Our spaghetti dinner was a big success because By that time we had some good cooks. As the juniors prepared for their prom, We “cleaned up ” for our car wash. Many of those cars went to the prom Looking as good as new (maybe even better!). That next year, we became juniors and Eagerly awaited our prom. The prom committee made the decisions on the Place, the food, and the band. Our prom turned out to be a memorable event For most of us. No one can forget our group of talented Dancers and singers, nor our beautiful queen. As seniors we begin to count Down those final days to graduation. We started our senior year by selling Christmas ornaments, which went rather well. We had the traditional candy sale with hopes To cut the cost of our senior banquet. No one will forget the time when it was Finally our chance to go to Great Adventure! Our Banquet was sure to be one of the best- We have our officers and advisors to Thank for that! These four years at Bacon Academy will always Bring back fond memories of the happy times We've shared together as a class. -Sheryl Cameron favorites Of Zhe Class Of 1983 I 1. Pink Sloyd 2. Dublin is the capital city, located on the east shore. He comes from a small family and he has one brother. While here, Karl is staying with the Shea’s. John will be going back with him to Ireland during the summer. Karl enjoyed his first Thanksgiving at the Shea’s. In Ireland, Karl attended an all boys Christian Broth- ers Academy. This would be like our grades 7-12. To enter this Academy, Karl had to take an entrance examination. Karl enjoys the courses and activities he is participating in. Karl’s courses consist of: pre-calculus, U.S. history, American Literature, sociology, and computer math. While attending Bacon, he has been on the soccer and basketball teams. When people see Karl, they can tell he is unique. We are fortunate to have the opportunity of his company and to learn about his culture. He enjoys the United States and would like to attend college here. But, of course, he misses Ireland, his family, and the social life. Brian Dawson flantes D. Bacon ended in second place in the COC with a 9-3-0 record and was ranked 8th in the state ending with an over- all record of 11 -3-0. Having defeated every team they faced at least once, they hosted 24th ranked Suffield in the state tournament. Bacon played a very hard game against Suffield, which ended in a 0-0 tie. With the game still not being de- cided after two five-minute overtimes, and one sudden-death overtime peri- od, a shoot-out was necessary. Suffield outscored Bacon to win the game 1-0. The team is losing three fine players from the starting line-up: center for- ward, Lisa Vi lardi; center fullback, Sue Ferling; and right halfback, Pam Senus. 109 no in ff+til STAY AWAY! w k r . j: Everybody was kung fu fighting, “Don’t talk to the ball Tom, kick it!' . 113 114 Cross Country Recently, Jack Long’s Girls Cross Country team won their 100th meet, thus Long became one of very few coaches to muster 100 wins in four sports. But, that’s not all he has done at Ba- con Academy. At Bacon, Long has initi- ated Boys Cross Country in 1966, both Girls Cross Country and Track and Field in 1972 and Bovs Track and Field in 1962. He stepped down from coaching Boys Track and Field in 1979 after com- piling a record of 128-74-1. Long knows that its been more than his coaching that has won for Bacon. “Bacon’s been blessed with plenty of good athletes’’, he said. Long, looking to the future, hopes to continue the quality program that has been established at Ba- con. Long’s most recent honor is per- haps his biggest. The National High School Athletic Coaches Associa- tion has selected him as the nominee from Connecticut for the Coach of the Year. From that plateau he can re- ceive national honors and recognition, (condensed from “The Standard’’, article by Corky Sawchuk) kCQ (left to right) Front row- Elyse Park, Lisa Anilowski, Hit a Drenga, Ronnie Bradshaw. They also seized third in the C.O.C. and eleventh out of twenty-two in the state. 1'here was also a show of outstanding individuals. Bon- nie, Nicole, Rita, Gail, Elyse, Maurya, and Valerie received letters. Out of these seven, Nicole, Rita, and Elyse were named C.O.C. all-stars. The recipient of “The Most Valuable Runner” was Gail Guarnaccia. She holds the second fastest time on Bacon’s course. Gail ran seventeenth in the State Class S” which qualified her for the State Open. The “Most Improved Runner” was Elyse Park. She placed in every meet of the season and came in thirteenth overall in the C.O.C. 16 118 The boys cross country team finished third in the C.O.C. and qualified for the State Class “S”. Their record was eight and five. Letter winners were Doug Adkins, Darrin Eisman, Tim Hardy, Berkeley Parsons, Jeff Small, Robbie Sylvester, and Randy Willson. The All-stars were Doug Adkins, Darrin Eisman, and Tim Hardy who was the “Most Improved Darrin is this year’s “Most Valuable Runner Since he was a Freshman he has broken records every- where. He has won the C.O.C. individual title three years in a row. He qualified to run in the State open, and as an All-state runner. 120 Iik Back Row: Coach Shea, Mike Martingano, Don Hanover, Dave Olson, Karl Butler, Bill Gagnon, Andy Shoop, Alan Damarjian, Todd Tamburri Front Row: Bob Gagnon, Wayge Smith, John Shea, Paul Withee, Jon Turner, Ron Lefebvre W 121 Considering the small size of Bacon Academy, it has had a surplus of athletic talent. This year’s graduation marked the farewell of one of the most talented. John Shea has left a trail that won’t be easily followed. Selected as an All-Stater in basketball during his Junior and Senior years, John’s most noted for basketball but is equally gifted in baseball. Athletically, he started his Senior year in superb form. Scoring 51 points in Bacon’s opening game to break the existing school record of 48, John went on to win the area’s scoring title for the second year in a row. His average of over 34 points per game was also tops in the state. Nineteen eighty-three has been a durable class, John is certainly one of the established reasons for that persistency. Class ‘S’ hadn’t seen such a powerful team in years. The Bacon Bobcats earned the respect of every team that challenged them and many that they didn’t have to face. It’s a rarity, especially for a Class ‘S’ team, to have had a perfect blend of speed, ball control, shooting and depth. The man in charge, coach Dave Shea, had his team qualified for the state tourna- ment in the minimal number of games. From there they remained undefeated for the duration of the regular season and helped coach Shea notch his 300th career win during the second half of the season. The team itself was a showcase of grace and talent. In the middle of it all was co- captain John Shea. Shea, along with leading the state in scoring, proved game in and game out to be one of the best all around players in Connecticut. Co-captain Paul Withee showed he was one of the best point guards in the area. Then, there was the lad from Ireland. Karl Butler adjusted to the American style of basketball and we found as well as refreshing. Don Hanover and Jon Tirrner stayed' reliable throughout the year to help round out a ------ Charter Oak Conference. 123 Qirls basketball Varsity Team Captains: Lisa Vilardi and Cheryl Blecha Coach-Jim Robinson Assistant coach-Ann Robinson Rita Drenga Janet Frosti Kim Thurber Sally Hutchins April Davis TraceyLindstrom Jeri Casler Sue Gorreck Sue Bittman After a dismal 1981-1982 campaign, the Bobkitten’s roared back with a new coach and came out winning. Posting a 11-7 regular season record, the girls greatly improved the 2- 18 mark of a year ago. Being led by senior Lisa Vilardi and junior Cheryl Blecha, Bacon had an excellent first half. Lisa and Cheryl’s supporting cast included junior Janet Frosti, sophomores April Davis and Sally Hutchins, and freshman Sue Gorreck. In regard to the seasons first half, the rest of their schedule was split between wins and losses. One loss that hurt wasn’t a game. Janet Frosti left at the season's mid- point to become an exchange student in Belgium. It was an enjoyable season to all who witnessed the games, rhe contests were exciting and showed great promise for next year. Toss up. Do like the navy does: sink it! Graduation, this is our year. The year that ends our high school career. We be- gin to reminisce about our years at Ba- con. We also look to the future and won- der. There were many good times and bad through our four years. Each year was special. Our class slowly moved up the scale to be seniors. We tried to be like no other class before us. As the years went on, the future snuck up on us. Our last year had begun with dreaming, dreaming of the future and what it held for us. For some this would be the last year of schooling. For others college would be the next step. Time seems to pass too quickly. Some go onto college, others enter the working world. Which ever road we take, we will never forget the friends and experience from our twelve years of education, espe- cially our four years at Bacon Academy. As we come to a closing of the 1983 yearbook, we have ended a chapter in the senior class’s life. What is in our future no one can tell, we have but to live it. 135
