“
What will the class of 1982 be doing at their ten year class reunion other than recalling the scandalous epi- sodes that took place at Great Adventures in New Jersey? Chances are they might talk about the Prom held at the Royal Banquet Hall in Lisbon on May 8, 1981 while dancing to it's theme, Eric Clapton’s “Wonderful To- night . Or maybe they will remember the infamous sophomore car wash held for those members of the class of 1981 going to their prom. And how could anyone forget the Bacon Academy “Chainsaw Mas- sacre in the student parking lot, or the Boys’ Basket- ball Team capturing the State Class S Title? With graduation on their minds they might speak of how the class of 1982 was the first to have to graduate with 21 credits and a passing grade on the math competency exam. Could they, perhaps, talk of how they saw the Roll- ing Stones in concert in October of '81 while the band hired for the evening bursts into a sentimental rendi- tion of “Start Me Up”, the class’ most popular song during their senior year. Will they remember Dudley Moore from the movie “Arthur”, or “Stripes”, their favorite movie? Alan Alda from “M A S'H”, and Mean Joe Green with the kid from the Coke com- mercial will seem to be classics as will the saga of Luke and Laura on “General Hospital”. The look of the '80's will surely be recreated sartori- ally. Someone will show up in the traditional Levi’s garb while others will pull out their old Sergio Va- The Class Of 1982 J lente’a or Calvin’s. Still others will recall and wear the black soled boot forebidden in the hallways at Bacon. Maybe even a pair of Leather pants or Sporto’s might crop up. They will discuss popular issues of the '80’s such as the hostages being released from Iran at the same i time of the inauguration of President Ronald Reagan, I waking up at 6 a.m. to watch the Royal Wedding of , Prince Charles and Lady Di in England, the assassi- nation attempts on the President and the Pope; the launching of the space shuttle, the plane crash in the Potomac, the appointment of Sandra O'Connor as the first female Supreme Court Justice. Reaganomics, and Polish Solidarity. They will remember the important political figures we lost such as State Governor Ella Grasso, State Representative William Cotter, and Egypt's Anwar Sa- | dat. The assassination of John Lennon and the resur- gence of Beatlemania will also be a subject for discussion. Perhaps the 52 persons out of the 82 members of the class that plan to go to college will tell of their j| career plans. Will the class really consist of eight com- puter programmers, seven business persons, four nurses, three lawyers, two commercial artists, and a meteorologist, amongst other things? These and other puzzles can only be answered by the class of '82 in '92. The following lists are the favorite songs and movies of the graduating class. • On The Airwaves • At The Movies • I Love Rock-n-Roll (Joan Jet) Tom Sawyer (Rush) Young Turks (Rod Stewart) Little T A (Rolling Stones) Out Lips are Sealed (GoGos) T-N-T (AC DC) Wonderful Tonight (Eric Clapton) Best of Times (Styx) Start Me Up (Rolling Stones) Tapestry (Carole King) Tomorrow (from Annie ) Let It Be (Beatles) Leader of the Band (Dan Foglebuig) You got a Hold on Me (Eddie Money) Wouldn't It Be Nice (Beach Boys) Teach Your Children Well (Crosby. As head advisor of the senior class we know his headaches have been many. Through bake sales, candy sales, flower sales, and potluck suppers he has supported and believed in the class, putting up with laziness, rowdiness, and just plain lack of spirit. We realize that many of our “typical” class activities such as the Prom, the Banquet, class rings, and graduation paraphernalia would have never been the successes they were had it not been for his no-nonsense manner and guiding influence. Of course Mr. Lander isn't all seriousness; although he is the first person to yell at the class for unsporting behaviour at an assembly he is also quick to make a pun or crack a joke to put you at ease in an otherwise hopelessly uptight situation. He is also famous for praising those who have made an effort to help the class, whether they are successful or not, making either the frustration go away or the sense of accomplishment stronger. With these contributions in mind we wish to thank Mr. Lander for his untiring efforts for the Class of 1982. u cS o p u cd S 5 A Quick Look Back James MacDonald The race is not always to the swift but to those who keep on running. The first morale booster of the year was a Spirit Week from September 28 through October 2. The week was a competition between the classes with each paying a fee of $25.00 to enter The recipients of the $100.00 prize were the senior clas9 followed closely by the extremely spirited junior class, the freshman class, and finally the sophomore class. The week also featured a penny drive that contributed $200.00 to the Student Council treasury. The money from the penny drive was contributed towards an assembly for the student body featuring The History of Rock and Roll which combined music commentary and over 280 slides that spanned almost thirty years of rock and roll. After the show the host. Gary James, quizzed the audience and awarded Beatles Albums tor correct answers. The Spirit Week was preceded by a dance featuring the band Aura. The dance was a big success and the band was invited back for a dance later on in the year. There was another Spirit Week just before Christmas that featured a decoration competi- tion as well as a regular class competition Honor Society Wanda Bod6n. Adam Lazinsk. John Shutt. The team worked very hard under Coach John McKiernan, and were very optimistic about the year. The Bobcats opened with a home game against Lyman. The team had several close games during the season which could have gone either way. Summed up you could say that every possible thing that could have gone wrong did. The season was highlighted by a tie with St. Bernards, an expected loss, and a win on the final game of the season against Hale Ray, which knocked them out of the tournament. Trophies went out to KennV Stevens for Most Valuable Player, John Green and Darrel Taggart for Most Improved Players, and Chris Hageman received the Coaches Award. The team would like to give special thanks to the fans, manager Dan Hageman, and scorekeeper Bernie Phillips. The team is looking forward to next season and hopes to have your support. 87 Girl’s Soccer Back Row: Coach D. Johnson. Carolyn Moss. Amanda Leyda, April Davis. Lisa Vilardi. Cheryl Blecha. I'm late, l m late, for a very important 91 The Bacon Academy girls soccer team had an outstanding season this year finish- ing with a 10-5 record. Ranked 3rd in the C.O.C. the girls proved to many that they were not to be taken lightly. The Bobkittens entered the State Tournament in 13th place and played their first game against 24th ranked Housatonic. After Beating Housa- tonic 1-0 they got the opportunity to meet 1st ranked E.O. Smith. This game proved to be a constant challenge to the defensive players and ended in a 3-0 loss. The teams success was largely due to the skills and teamwork of many of its’ players. Most valu- able player went to Sophomore Janet Frosti, who was named to the C.O.C. All- Star team as halfback. Most improved play- er went to Senior Cheryl Holt, who proved to be a major factor in determining the out- come of many games. Cheryl was named to the second C.O.C. All-Star team as goalie. Best Novice went to Freshman April Davis. Defensive awards were given to Pam Small and Junior Sue Ferling. Sue was also named to the second C.O.C. All-Star team as a defender. Overall the girls team dis- played the kind of teamwork and ability not often seen in a second year team. 92 Don’t worry, girls, you’re only down by 10 goals! Didn’t you o your jumping jacks before the game. Pam? I “Girls Cross Country” The girls’ 1981 cross country team had an excellent turn out this year. There were four freshmen, ten sophomores, and four juniors compared to the six freshmen and one senior of last year. The team’s record wasn't out standing, but it was nothing to be disappointed about. There were eight wins six losses in dual meets, and the team was third in the C.O.C., and eleventh in the state. Of the eighteen team members, six received their letters and three were C.O.C. All Stars. To receive a cross country letter, you must be in the top ten of two thirds of all the meets. Tanya Davis, Nicole Damar- jian, Gail Guarnaccia, Maurya Purcell, Valerie Wozniak, and Rita Drenga all received letters. The C.O.C. All Stars were Nicole Damar- jian, Gail Guarnaccia, and Rita Drenga. The recipient of “the most valuable runner” was Rita Drenga. She showed outstanding running ability for her first year on the team. She came in the top ten of all meets and many times she was in the C.O.C., only one second away from the second place finisher. Also, receiving “best novice” was Tanya Davis. She worked hard and improved her running ability throughout the entire season. By the end of the season she was Bacon’s fourth runner. Tanya finished fourth for Bacon in the C.O.C. and third for Bacon in the State. The “most improved runner” was Nicole Damarjian, who finished seventh in the C.O.C. and thirty- first in the State. The girls on the cross country team wish to thank coach Jack Long and coach Mark Lander for putting in their time to help and guide them through this season. 1981 Girls Cross Country Record Woodstock 31-24 Cromwell 18-37 Portland 30-25 East Hampton 32-27 Lyman 30-27 Holy Family 20-40 Putnam 30-25 Coventry 25-34 St. Mary's 29-26 Coginchaug 26-29 RHAM 17-42 Rocky Hill 17-42 East Windsor 17-41 New London 22-35 wins The 1981 Girls Cross Country Team Tanya Davis Lisa Anilowski Maurya Purcell Ellen Jacobi Suesan Nyack Colleen Watson Ginger Rowe Diane Molocko Bonnie Bradshaw Nicole Damarjian Jennifer Willwerth Gail Guarnaccia Rita Drenga Becky Bradshaw Elyse Park Michell Wetmore Valerie Wozniak Alison Phillips Boys Cross Country The 1981 Boys Cross Country Team Bill Vachon Steve Bourassa Darrin Eisman Ed Vachon Jeff Small Pat Keegan Drew Debowsky Randy Wilson Doug Adkins Dave Wilson Darrin After a disappointing season last year, the cross country team, under coaches Mark Lander and Jack Long, rolled to an 11-3 year and second place in the C.O.C.. The team, in the Eastern Sectional meet, went from 15th place last year to 5th place this year. They finished 12th in the State. The success was due to a lot of hard work on the part of the team and its very special individuals. One such individual was Darrin Eisman who smashed course records every- where he ran. He won the C.O.C. Individual title for the second year in a row. He led the field of runners in the Sectional meet and finished a strong second in the State. He also qualified as an All-State runner by finishing 20th in the State Open. Dave Wilson, Pat Keegan, and Doug Adkins along with Darrin qualified for the C.O.C. All-Star positions. Letter winners were Darrin Eisman, Dave Wilson, Doug Adkins, Pat Keegan, Jeff Small, Bill Vachon, Ed Vachon, and Randy Wilson. Coach: John Long Coach: Mark Lander Girl’s Basketball Back Row; Coach Mary Shonty. April Davis. Sue Ferling. Janet Frosti. Sally Hutchins. Jackie Towne. Front Row: Cheryl Blecha, Lisa Vilardi. Cheryl Holt. Kelly St. Peter. = - The Bacon Bobkittens had a rebuilding year this year with the help of coach Mary Shonty. Coach Shonty took over the team a week be- fore the first game. It was a challenge for both the coach and for the team. We hope to contin- ue to improve in the years to come. Boy’s Basketball Co-captain Steve Labonosky and fellow senior co-captain John Young teamed with junior John Shea, the lone returning starter for the State Championship squad, in the frontcourt. Junior Paul Withee was point guard and seniors Ken Stevens and Ahmad Davis shared the other backcourt spot. Senior Robert (Boober) Webster who played basketball for his first year, was also a key contributor to the team. “I was expecting a lean season, said Coach Dave Shea, “but it's been a pleasant surprise. The determination of our two senior Co-captains has been a key, they’ve given younger players excellent leadership. There’s a lot of teamwork- this is a very unselfish team, each player knows what his role is.” One person who has not had much of a problem with shot selection this year is John Shea, who is the area’s leading scorer- averaging just under 30 points per game. Last season Shea was a guard for Bacon, but due to lack of height this season he was moved up to play a forward-center position, a transition that’s not easy to make. The Bobcat program has been a winner statistically for quite some time and has always had one thing regardless of what kind of talent or numbers it had — CLASS.
