. .. And opportunities to enact our own scenarios. Bacon crew goes to Amherst; bringing back some pizzazz! What's it like to partici- pate in a summer work- shop in journalism? Just ask Kathy Saitta, Jodi Balaban, Adam La- zinsk and Seth Park. They'll tell you that Mr. Norris and they freely moved about the Amherst College campus, laughed at the humor and record- ed the current, novel, and the applicable info pro- vided by the Ohio Uni- versity group. They com- pleted layout designs. created, wrote, and exam- ined statements of theme, journalistic style and ef- fective photography. Not to mention numerous consultations with fellow students, advisers and workshop leaders. Catering to the im- proved production of high school yearbooks and newspapers, the New England Workshop drew one-hundred fifty-five registrants from fifty-eight schools in eleven states. Colonel Savage, affectionately known as Mr. Yearbook, can safely be called the backbone of the workshop. He instructed with incredible perception, clarity, and humor.

Bacon gets a lift! Why the addition of an elevator? A Feder- al law passed in 1973 requires all public buildings to be accessible to the handi- capped. The project cost between $90,000 and $100,000 and will be paid for by a Feder- al grant. Mr. Warren commented that only the handicapped persons or those with tem- porary disabilities such as a broken leg are able to use the elevator. Bacon should ex- pect some further renovations to improve safety and to make the facility more accessi- ble to the handicapped, such as a ramp to the stage and wider stalls in the lavs.

The community and the school get in touch during Open House. This year on October 2, Bacon Academy opened its doors to the community to show them what we've been up to. Upstairs, our computer was on display in the Math Department. Demonstrated by Diane Hover and students. While downstairs our Eng- lish Department was showing off, explaining to visitors how Bacon has produced students with above average scores on their college boards. Quite a variety of displays drew interest, from the Industrial Arts shop in the Armory to the open rehearsal of the Different Drummer Theatre group in the band room. Counselors Thomas Racine and Jeanette Gregory demon- strated the Guidance Information computer. Even Stef had a few exhibits out. Refreshments and student activity displays awaited and enticed most to the cafeteria. Among the activities were tents and equip- ment from the Outing Club; pompoms and pictures from the cheerleaders; banners and food from the Spanish Club, and layout and theme design from Baconian '81. FBLA and National Honor Society provided student guides for the evening. We tried to communicate with each other and the people of our community to accomplish three goals. We wanted to inform them of what we were doing, we wanted to entertain them through our roles of guide, actor, instructor, and exhibitor, and we wanted to convince them that their investment in our education was money well spent.
