SIDE SHOW Bacon shows its spirit! The 1980-81 Student Council, under presi- dent Jane Barch and adviser Colleen Bjorn- bekk, initiated a spirit week of October 27th- 31st. Organized by corresponding secretary of Student Council Val D'Andrea and her activi- ties committee were four special days of inter class competition based on a points system. Each class contributed twenty-five dollars to enter and the winning class received one hun- dred dollars for its treasury. The week consist- ed of a blue and gold day; tee-shirt, jeans and button day; hat, glasses and tie day; and inside out and backwards day. A Costume day was set for Friday of that week, but failed to meet facul- ty approval and was cancelled. A few diehards showed up in exotic garb anyway. Fortunately Mr. Warren took it light heartedly. The National Honor Society sponsored a food drive during the week, which also count- ed toward points in the competition. The Seniors won, followed by the Freshmen and distantly followed by Sophomores and Ju- niors. 6

The community and the school get in touch during Open House. This year on October 2, Bacon Academy opened its doors to the community to show them what we've been up to. Upstairs, our computer was on display in the Math Department. Demonstrated by Diane Hover and students. While downstairs our Eng- lish Department was showing off, explaining to visitors how Bacon has produced students with above average scores on their college boards. Quite a variety of displays drew interest, from the Industrial Arts shop in the Armory to the open rehearsal of the Different Drummer Theatre group in the band room. Counselors Thomas Racine and Jeanette Gregory demon- strated the Guidance Information computer. Even Stef had a few exhibits out. Refreshments and student activity displays awaited and enticed most to the cafeteria. Among the activities were tents and equip- ment from the Outing Club; pompoms and pictures from the cheerleaders; banners and food from the Spanish Club, and layout and theme design from Baconian '81. FBLA and National Honor Society provided student guides for the evening. We tried to communicate with each other and the people of our community to accomplish three goals. We wanted to inform them of what we were doing, we wanted to entertain them through our roles of guide, actor, instructor, and exhibitor, and we wanted to convince them that their investment in our education was money well spent.

Language week is a hit! In a joint effort the Span- ish and French Clubs, under advisors Joan Boudle and Barbara Brown, recognized Foreign Language Week from October 20th-24th with a series of activities. A bakesale kicked off the week, followed, by the In- ternational Dinner held at night in the Bacon cafeteria. The Spanish provided appe- tizers and entrees while the French contributed mouth watering desserts. The food was served family style. En- tertainment was furnished with compliments of the French Club, with proceeds from both activities going to the French and Spanish Clubs respectively. The week ended with a volleyball competition between the two, which is slowly but surely becoming a yearly tra- dition. The French won this year, but the Spanish are all set for a re-match anytime! As a result, the week be- came a definite boost for the foreign languages of Bacon Academy, helping to bring them out into the spotlight.
