BACONIAN 1981 THE OFFICIAL YEARBOOK OF BACON ACADEMY Norwich Avenue Colchester; Connecticut Bacon Theatres Life Giving Us Roles To Play . . . THESE WEE ACTIVE VISIT TO CECEECM On the sixth of September, the students and citizens of Colchester hosted a visiting band from Colchester, England, not an ordi- nary band of assorted instruments, but one of widely-ranged accordians and percussion. The Colchester Accordian Orchestra, ac- knowledged to be one of the finest in Great Britain and among the top of such orchestras on the continent of Europe, performed in a concert held September 10 at the Bacon Academy gymnasium. To a standing ovation by the public, the band played compositions especially composed for accordian groups, classical pieces, and Broadway tunes. The Westchester Congregational Church prepared and served a New England supper to the weary guests who returned one even- ing from Mystic Sea Port, the Mystic Aquar- ium, and the town of Essex. The orchestra members enriched the lives of those they came in contact with while they were here, demonstrating their won- derful customs and personalities. After ex- tending a public invitation to the Bacon Academy Band, the group left to visit Col- chester, Vermont. Bacon gets a lift! Why the addition of an elevator? A Feder- al law passed in 1973 requires all public buildings to be accessible to the handi- capped. The project cost between $90,000 and $100,000 and will be paid for by a Feder- al grant. Mr. Warren commented that only the handicapped persons or those with tem- porary disabilities such as a broken leg are able to use the elevator. Bacon should ex- pect some further renovations to improve safety and to make the facility more accessi- ble to the handicapped, such as a ramp to the stage and wider stalls in the lavs. . .. And opportunities to enact our own scenarios. Bacon crew goes to Amherst; bringing back some pizzazz! What's it like to partici- pate in a summer work- shop in journalism? Just ask Kathy Saitta, Jodi Balaban, Adam La- zinsk and Seth Park. They'll tell you that Mr. Norris and they freely moved about the Amherst College campus, laughed at the humor and record- ed the current, novel, and the applicable info pro- vided by the Ohio Uni- versity group. They com- pleted layout designs. created, wrote, and exam- ined statements of theme, journalistic style and ef- fective photography. Not to mention numerous consultations with fellow students, advisers and workshop leaders. Catering to the im- proved production of high school yearbooks and newspapers, the New England Workshop drew one-hundred fifty-five registrants from fifty-eight schools in eleven states. Colonel Savage, affectionately known as Mr. Yearbook, can safely be called the backbone of the workshop. He instructed with incredible perception, clarity, and humor. The community and the school get in touch during Open House. This year on October 2, Bacon Academy opened its doors to the community to show them what we've been up to. Upstairs, our computer was on display in the Math Department. Demonstrated by Diane Hover and students. While downstairs our Eng- lish Department was showing off, explaining to visitors how Bacon has produced students with above average scores on their college boards. Quite a variety of displays drew interest, from the Industrial Arts shop in the Armory to the open rehearsal of the Different Drummer Theatre group in the band room. Counselors Thomas Racine and Jeanette Gregory demon- strated the Guidance Information computer. Even Stef had a few exhibits out. Refreshments and student activity displays awaited and enticed most to the cafeteria. Among the activities were tents and equip- ment from the Outing Club; pompoms and pictures from the cheerleaders; banners and food from the Spanish Club, and layout and theme design from Baconian '81. FBLA and National Honor Society provided student guides for the evening. We tried to communicate with each other and the people of our community to accomplish three goals. We wanted to inform them of what we were doing, we wanted to entertain them through our roles of guide, actor, instructor, and exhibitor, and we wanted to convince them that their investment in our education was money well spent. SIDE SHOW Bacon shows its spirit! The 1980-81 Student Council, under presi- dent Jane Barch and adviser Colleen Bjorn- bekk, initiated a spirit week of October 27th- 31st. Organized by corresponding secretary of Student Council Val D'Andrea and her activi- ties committee were four special days of inter class competition based on a points system. Each class contributed twenty-five dollars to enter and the winning class received one hun- dred dollars for its treasury. The week consist- ed of a blue and gold day; tee-shirt, jeans and button day; hat, glasses and tie day; and inside out and backwards day. A Costume day was set for Friday of that week, but failed to meet facul- ty approval and was cancelled. A few diehards showed up in exotic garb anyway. Fortunately Mr. Warren took it light heartedly. The National Honor Society sponsored a food drive during the week, which also count- ed toward points in the competition. The Seniors won, followed by the Freshmen and distantly followed by Sophomores and Ju- niors. 6 Language week is a hit! In a joint effort the Span- ish and French Clubs, under advisors Joan Boudle and Barbara Brown, recognized Foreign Language Week from October 20th-24th with a series of activities. A bakesale kicked off the week, followed, by the In- ternational Dinner held at night in the Bacon cafeteria. The Spanish provided appe- tizers and entrees while the French contributed mouth watering desserts. The food was served family style. En- tertainment was furnished with compliments of the French Club, with proceeds from both activities going to the French and Spanish Clubs respectively. The week ended with a volleyball competition between the two, which is slowly but surely becoming a yearly tra- dition. The French won this year, but the Spanish are all set for a re-match anytime! As a result, the week be- came a definite boost for the foreign languages of Bacon Academy, helping to bring them out into the spotlight. Mr. Edward McKenny, our hard working and devoted Su- perintendent of schools. Board of Education: Bernard Park, Estelle Coreck, Rosemary Coyle, Richard Beaulier, Duncan Green, Adam Piekarz, David Tomm, Odessa Turner, Virginia Vilardi and missing from the photo is Ann Fedus. 8 Guidance . . . Contributing to the individualiza tion of learning. Credit is due to our Guid- ance Department, for putting up with the never ending num- ber of students clamoring for PSAT and SAT results, begging for a chance at the guidance computer, and demanding in- stant solutions for their sched- uling riddles. Not to mention the paper work! We know it's not easy being in such demand. Jeannette Gregory, Guidance Counselor Thomas Racine, Guidance Counselor CUE ICiEECTCES I 'V Robert Warren, Principal Owen Collins, Vice-Principal Their technical staff Carol Chemerynski, Guidance Clerk Jeanne Polk, Secretary Instructing us in our need for an identity, with concern, guidelines and recognition. Mr. Warren and Mr. Collins have been keeping themselves occupied this year with numerous school renova- tions, trying to involve the community in more school activities, and improv- ing our over-all student activity pro- gram. Their major headaches though, have been smoking in the girls' lavatory and food fights in the cafeteria. We're sure they'll come up with the answers which might take a lot of work, but if the students made it any easier, where would the challenge be? Being there has never been easy. For one thing, the teacher has to get through numerous pages of printed matter to single out that which is important to those particular students who are trying to get their heads together, their coats off, and to tune in to the latest gossip, which one faculty member calls the social cement of Colchester. All this would'nt be so bad if it could be accomplished from 7:50 to 7:56 AM, but just when everyone has raced through it all and is ready to head for the door, that friendly voice comes over the loud speaker to remind us all that homeroom has been extended, for the distribution of senior candy, band and chorus salethons, taking of senior portraits, and the sale of yearbooks. It's then that we turn around, drop into our seats, shake our heads, roll our eyes and by doing so express to each other that everything is normal. Joanne Bryant, Home Economics, B.S. Gross has been teaching psychology at the University of Hartford fot twenty-six years. Finding any spare time in Doc's life is very hard. He's a consultant in the National Broadcasting Company, and to a television series Off the Wall , and he's also the advi- sor to the Different Drum- mer Theatre group. Not to mention the wonderful new twist he added to the Senior Follies of last year with the dinner theatre type of atmo- sphere. He's been involved in theatre for more than thirty years and in that time he's done hundreds of plays. Many of his former students have continued on to be- come professionals. If Doc ever finds any spare time, he enjoys it by doing wood carvings, particularly miniature furniture and peo- ple. Doc enjoys everything he does and just plain loves to stay busy. We would like to thank Doc for his very special contributions and in- fluences given to Bacon, may we always be as fortunate as to have such quality on our staff. Mr. Norris directs a literary staff that often needs encourage- ment as well as hassel if the production is to be artisically worth its price while Mrs. Norris so manueveurs the business staff through the sale of ads, the continued appreciation and support of the business community, the sale of books to the faculty and student body, and the billing, collecting, and audit- ing of all accounts for Baconian '81. Sacrificing parts of their prep periods, having their lunch time interrupted, and donating long weekends to proofreading have not gone unnoticed. We of Baconian appreciate the final say and executive deci- sion exercized by our advisors and understand the overall diffi- culty of the job of literary and business production. Class members participated in dramatic and singing groups, the Outing Club, and the FBLA. Freshmen were active in a great many sports: nine boys on the JV soccer team, and two of them played on varsity. Five made the girls soccer team. Six of the seven girls and two boys ran cross country. Three made the varsity Cheer Leading squad, but the entire JV squad was composed of freshmen. Five boys and six girls made the JV basketball teams, and two girls made the varsity basket- ball roster. On the wrestling team, five boys contended in light and heavy weight divi- sions. Why are you looking at me? The Class of 1983 started earning money in their freshmen year. This fact has helped them as a basis for their sophomore year. Their class officers have worked closely with them in designing numerous events for the year. One of their events was the Pancake Breakfast. It was very profitable, thanks to the supporters of it. The Class of 1983 has sold blue and gold pom- pons and mistletoe while showing some of their school and Christmas spirit. They are planning a Pre-Prom car wash, which is becoming a tradition for the Bacon Sophomore Classes. The money that the class is making and hopes to make is going towards various things such as their Junior Prom and Senior Banquet. 30 Sitting pretty You did what last night? Helping a friend Preparation for a class A lost attempt The sophomore class has a wide variety of people. These people are involved in activities throughout the school and community. Some are more out- standing than others. Two outstanding sophomores are Pam Pekoske and Bill Williams. Pam has been the president of her class for two years. She is a member of student council, the Span- ish club, yearbook sales, the Stationary Road Show, and is a varsity cheerleader. Pam received the Hugh O'Brien Award this year, along with previous awards throughout her school career. She has many hobbies such as dance lessons, reading, art, and all sports. Pam helps her family with raising horses as well as showing them. Bill is also an outstanding member of his class. He is in the drama club at Bacon, a member of the Greater Hartford Youth Orchestra and the Connecticut Val- ley Wind Ensemble at the Hartt College of Music. Bill made All State Band this year. Your average answer might be ninety-six students; but, they are more than that. Twenty-one of them drive to school daily. Fifteen boys have their own wheels as do seven girls. Favorite musical groups: Eagles and Queen, the choices of the guys, while Lynyrd Skynyrd and Queen take the vote of the gals. What do the males watch on the tube? Thats right! Benny Hill, and what appeals to the newly liberated? Would you believe M.A.S.H. For those who think juniors don't read, here is some news. The girls are talking about Flowers in the Attic; the boys commenting on the latest in Playboy. The juniors have their romantic side also. The gals chose to date classmates, seniors, and men of the college campus; the guys chase classmates and underclass attractions. The Class of 1982 may be very active, but two juniors top the list. Adam Lazinsk is one of these active Juniors. He became a member of the Bacon Band in his Freshmen year, and a Student Council member. His sophomore year repeated his first, but he joined the staff of Baconian and became the Sophomore Editor. To add to his activities, he was inducted into the National Honor Society. In his Junior year, Adam decided to represent the class again-he became the Junior Editor of Baconian, as well as a business member. Adam also joined the Bacon Chorus. He has a big interest in student government and is the Junior Class President, a position he strived to achieve the previous two years. Carol Costello is another active Junior. In her Freshmen year, she was on the girl's softball team. Her sophomore year was a little more hectic. She was inducted into the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society. She became a member of Peerpoint Press and she was in the Stationary Roadshow. Finding that she was interested in more, she joined the Spanish Club and was voted president. She also became a secretary of Baconian. Her Junior year became more active. This year, she is a Student Council member, a member of the Outing Club, a member of the Baconian Constitution Committee, People Editor of Baconian. She is still a member of Peerpoint Press, both Honor Societies, and she is active on the Junior Prom Committee. Once again she was member of the Spanish Club and was voted president. 44 The look of innocence 0 Dawn Greg John Sandee Cheryl How can this be?! And The Team Erik Randlov Troy Gardner Dan Gardner Matt Tallman Dave Daigle John Shea Brian Goodwin Steve Labonosky Paul Withee John Young John Turner Merrick Alpert Coach Dave Shea and his varsity Bobcats did more this season than anyone at Bacon Academy had dreamed possible at the start of the season. The team jumped out to an 8 and 0 start, winning the Ellington Christmas Tournament, and placing three men on the Tournament Allstar team. Then the dream bubble burst. Three straight losses to Portland, Cromwell, and East Hampton dimmed the Bobcat's outlook. They knew they would have to win the remainder of their games to get a piece of the C.O.C. crown. Coach Shea took the team aside and told them that he believed that they could win, but that they had to believe in themselves. Well, believe they dial The Bobcats ended their regular season with a 17 and 3 record and half the C.O.C. title which they shared with Cromwell. The Bobcats then entered post season play, run- ning up five straight wins over Cogincnaug, East Hampton, Portland, Cromwell and Griswold to get themselves a spot in the Class S State Champion- ship finals. The Championship game, the best one of the year, was played before 1510 fans at Central State College. The Bobcats started out strong. At one point in the game. Coach Shea called a brief timeout just to settle the Bobcats down. The glorious moment came as the buzzer sound- ed. The fans and players were ecstatic for the 1981 Bobcats had done something no other Bacon basket- ball team had. They became state champions. The sports pages of The Norwich Bulletin, The Hartford Courant. The Middletown Press, and The New London Day highlighted the action of the tour- nament in photo and word which proclaimed the championship form, condition, and the play of the 1981 Bobcats. Are you willing to alter your eating habits? If you've answered no to either, you'd never make it through a season with the Bacon wrestling team. Coach Bill Paradis schedules practice everyday at 2:15. To warmup, the wrestlers do leg raises, take down drills, windmills, reversal drills, neck bridges, spinning, mat drills, pullups, and running up two flights of stairs forty-five times. After their warmup, practice begins. At this time, they do 360 pushups, 250 situps, and five miles of running through halls and the cross country course. The wrestlers also have to carry 1500 pounds of mat to central and after their hard practice, back to Bacon. After this, the wrestlers work on the tech- niques of wrestling: speed, agility, and bal- ance. The season is twelve weeks. Wrestlers practice everyday (except when a meet is scheduled), and this includes Christmas and February vacation. An average wrestler is ex- pected to lose twenty five pounds during a season. A few of these dedicated wrestlers in- clude: Andy Walker (Captain) and Ed Vachon who received the most valuable awards; Tom Atkins who received the most desire award, and Mike Thurber who received the most improved award. Yes! Dramatic? No! Perhaps our most interesting productions are staged everywhere except upon the stage, and oddly enough they all carry the same title. Most of us simply refer to them as dating. Where do these lovers and their high school students spend their time? The freshmen and sophomores have limited activities for transporta- tion is usually not available. The juniors are an- other story. With their new licenses and dads' cars, they are ready to trip to where the music is, but since many of them do not work and can't afford anything beside McDonalds, most of them spend their time in their cars driving, sitting, park- ing. .. . The seniors are the ones constantly on go; they regard it a crime to stay home or even to be seen at home. They must go out, anywhere. May- be they'll see a movie, go bowling, rollerskate, or barhop. Or even better, they'll drive around all night trying to top their last bit of excitement. In any case, it is rare for a senior to cast himself at home on a Friday night with mom, dad, and-the TV. It is not only their friends who confuse them, it's also their teachers and relatives. One has pierced ears, one has a deeper voice, but otherwise they look alike. When they're bored with their lives, they change places and few notice. The same is true with two juniors: Karen and Kathy Saitta. One has darker hair, one sometimes wears glasses, but otherwise they look and sound the same. Two other seniors who are twins are Belinda and Sandy Straker. Debbie Freshman Year Mr. Aloia The Class of 1981 has four advisors: Diane Hover, Kenneth Roy, Carol Carson and Frank Aloia. Although there are four advisors, only Frank Aloia and Carol Carson, chief advisors, have guided this class through its four years at Bacon. In their Freshmen year, things didn't look so well. They tried a few bake sales and attempted a booth at Bacon's tag sale, but things didn't go too well. Their Sophomore year, things picked up. They realized the need for some money for their Junior Prom, so they sold candy bars twice during the year, had numerous bake sales, and even sold popcorn. They won the Christmas Spirit Week prize of seventy-five dollars. Their spirit started growing along with their bank account. Mr. Aloia and Mrs. Carson suggested that the class collect dues once a week. Their Junior year was even better. They wanted a different, but Hard at work 122 Thank You! Mrs. Carson exciting Junior Prom. Therefore, they sold candy bars in school and at all the soccer games; they sold posters and calanders. They had numerous bake sales and a pancake breakfast. Dues were still being collected each week. The class of 1981 won the spirit week prize again. Mr. Aloia and Mrs. Carson suggested a Prom far away so friendly seniors and underclassmen would not crash the dance. The class of 1981 on May 9th, 1980, had its Prom in Lisbon, Connecticut, at the Royal Ball and Banquet Room. It was a different location from previous dances and no unwanted visitors addended. Helping the class to decide how to raise money, how to spend it wisely, how to be individuals, and how to have fun, the class advisors have not only been leaders, but have also been friends. Source: John Hastford Our special bouquet of roses is presented to Mr. Stanley Stefanowicz All those here at Bacon Academy are about to lose a wonderful teacher, colleague, and friend. Stanley Stefonowicz, affectionatly known as Stef to us all, will be retiring at the end of this year after twenty-five years of teaching. He will be greatly missed. It seems Stef has always been here to teach and to talk to. He began his teaching career with Bacon Academy in 1956, before which he was a draftsman and a construction worker. He found teaching favorable and saw it as doing what he liked to do and getting paid for it as well as enjoying involvement with the students. Stef taught the first art program ever at old Bacon in the Day Hall building and was one of the ten teachers there. When the Arts and Sciences building was put up, Stef moved there and then finally into the present Bacon Academy where the first art classes were held in the present band room. n has always appeared gruff on the exterior, not a day went by when there weren't a few gangsters or jokers lurking about or goofing off, not to mention the numbers of dizzy females. And Stef's criticisms of any artistic endeavors always seemed just a bit harsh ( That's ugly! ) but nevertheless constructive. But when he did give out his approval, it was one of the biggest compliments anyone could receive. Stef has that certain personality that no matter how harsh he tries to appear on the outside, his warm smile gives him away, and everyone can tell he's a big softie. We, the Baconian staff, would like to dedicate this year's yearbook to Stef because we feel a special member of our Bacon family is departing and would like a chance to let him know how much we appreciate him. So thank you, Stef, for all the guidance and compassion, and good times. We sure are going to miss you. 130 General Index Adamski, Stephanie 18 Adkins, Doug 65, 32 Adkins, Jennifer 74, 90, 121, Advertisements 94-115 Albert, Carl 36, 42, Albert, Janet 74, Allen, Helen
