Basketball March 18, 1944, marked the closing of the Babylon basbetball season. Unlike other years, when this day was a day well worth remembering, this day was well worth forgetting, for it was the end of one of Babylon's most disastrous seasons. Because of the war, the entire Panther squad of last year was lost, with Frankie Ferraro, a substitute on last yea1 s squad, the only one who had any experience whatsoever. The rest were all members of last year's second team. Despite their lack of experience and height, the boys always did their best and provided a few thrilling games, although they failed to win but two games. The squad consisted of Capt. Frankie Ferraro, at one forward position, Joe CPorkyj Balcuns and Charlie Moore alternating at the other, Center John Cowie and Wally Brown, jim Shelton and Georgie Klein alternating at guard. Frankie was high scorer, and pretty much the spark plug of the Panther squad. Frankie scored 83 points during the season which was enough to gain for him honorable mention on the All-Section Md Team. Charlie Moore was runner up in the high scoring department scoring 76 points, and do- ing a fine job on defense. Joe CPorkyj Balcuns, gave a fine account of himself with his hook shot which can't be beat, enabling him to score many points on his taller opponents. Jim Shelton, Wally Brown, and George Klein played line defensive balL The substitutes who rounded out the squad were Eddy Frees, Ben Linger, and Dick Van Brunt. As for the games themselves, the scores pretty well tell the story. The most thrilling game of the season, or as a matter of fact of many seasons past, was the Babylon vs. Bay Shore game of Feb. 25. After being severely trounced in the first game of the season with Bay Shore, Babylon really put up a fight for this game, leading Bay Shore by one point, with 30 seconds to go-only to have Bay Shore score a bucket in the last 20 seconds, thus admin- istering a heartbreaking defeat upon the Babylon boys. This was one game which they really deserved to win.
