B.3. Qt dy Hi gh Softool Albertson, North Caroli? Gransifion . B. 3. Qvdiiy 0 V e r ) 1 o For thirty-three successful years the halls of B. F. Grady have echoed the laughter of high school students. As each year has passed, the fashion circle has revolved bringing with it the present-day trend in clothing. Therefore, in this the final edition of THE OVERFLOW we have tried to depict on the division pages these changing styles. During this time there has grown an intimate relationship between student and school. Now comes the time when we are looking eagerly toward greener pastures. Nevertheless, in look- ing forward, we also pause to look backward. Always we shall cherish the wonderful memories Grady has left with us. It is with sentiment then, that we say Au Revoir to GRADY, and with anticipation that we say Bonjour to EAST DUPLIN. w Students Raising Flag 2 High School Monument A u Revolt ei Bonjour Contents Page DEDICATION ... 4 ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY 5 CLASSES 11 ELEMENTARY GRADES 33 ACTIVITIES 45 ATHLETICS 55 FEATURES 59 ADVERTISEMENTS 77 Proposed East Duplin High School 3 Dedication For many years of watchful care, service, and understanding, we, the Senior Class of nineteen hundred and sixty-two, proudly dedicate this volume of THE OVERFLOW with love and gratitude to you OUR PARENTS 4 Administration and 3aculty Administration Stic Principal MR. EFFIE OUTLAW Appalachian State College 10 First Grade Classes 11 Class History After the summer of 1958 ended, a class of green freshmen entered high school at B. F. Grady. Mrs. Alice Davis and Mr. Alton Whaley were our sponsors. Class officers were elected as follows: Presidents, Blythe Bell and Donald Grady; Vice-Presidents, Nellie Waters and Shirley Smith; Secretaries, Lynda Westbrook and Carole Malpass; Treasurers, Jewell Adams and Carole Malpass; and Reporters, Helen Herring and Jo Ann Barnette. Many of the freshmen joined the Future Homemakers of America and Future Farmers of America. Other activities were wiener roasts and skating parties. Our freshmen were also seen on the basketball court and in the baseball field. The summer passed quickly and soon the doors w ere thrown open for us as sophomores. The year began with the election of the following officers: Geri Wiggins and Donald Grady, Presidents; Nellie Waters and Aaron Smith, Vice- Presidents; Joe Harrell and Lynda Westbrook, Secretaries; Murial Jones and Donald Hill, Reporters; and Carol Smith and Barbara Smith, Treasurers. Homeroom teachers were Mrs. Edna Ward and Mr. Larry Stewart. A group of the sophomores were tapped into the Beta Club. They were Geri Wiggins, Scarlette Hill, Murial Jones, Ruth Rhodes, Donald Grady, and Joe Harrell. Some of the sophomores went to the State Fair and ate so much they got sick and had to miss several days of school. Before we could really get accustomed to being sophomores, we were juniors. This was a year of wild confusion, work, and play. Our sponsor, of whom we were very proud, was Mrs. Alice Davis. Our officers for the junior year were: President, Larry Davis; Vice-President, Carol Reardon; Secretary, Lynda Westbrook; Reporter, Joan Westbrook; and Treasurer, Adrian Grubbs. Next it was time to topple the goal in selling magazines. We had two teams headed by Larry Davis and .Carol Reardon. The losing side had to give the winning side a party. Everyone enjoyed a barbecue supper at Griffin ' s. Then, it was time to select class rings. After a tough decision the class decided on Carolina blue with an old English G embedded in it. We have certainly enjoyed showing them off. The Junior Class also presented a three act play entitled Mama ' s Baby Boy. We had our Junior- Senior banquet at Hotel Goldsboro. Our theme for the banquet was Cinderella. It was revealed that Katherine Dunn and Robert Smith, seniors, were Cinderella and the Prince. The highlight of the banquet was their crowning. A sad occasion during our junior year was the retirement of Mr. H. M. Wells, our principal. Nevertheless, everyone welcomed our new principal, Mr. William D. Thigpen. Many changes have taken place since his arrival. Suddenly summer came and we began our vacation. Vacation ended and we started the year as the seniors of 1962. We found our school had been equipped with an in- tercommunication system. It was a surprise for us, but we soon became acquainted with it. Our senior sponsor was Mr. Edgar Wells. The seniors elected these officers: Charles Jarman, President; Joan Westbrook, Vice-President; Nellie Waters, Secretary; Lynda Westbrook and Donald Grady, Treasurers; Gwen Bishop, Reporter; and Burma Stroud, De- votional Chairman. Selling ads for the 1962 edition of the OVERFLOW was the next big undertaking of the class. Our other money-making projects at the present are bake sales, dances, suppers, and selling dish clothes. The class is looking forward to calling cards, invitiations, and caps and gowns. Now everyone will be waiting for gra duation day, when we shall sadly leave B. F. Grady after four joyous years.
