THE Published By THE SENIOR CLASS of B.F. GRADY SCHOOL Albertson, North Carolina 1957 mm FOREWORD That first school bus ride, like that first day in school, was a dream come true. Still, the fulfillment of that long awaited dream was simply the beginning of many other dreams. Among these happy and pleasant dreams, the day of graduation has been a shining objective. Holding fast to it through the years, we know now that dreaming encourages growth, happiness, and success. So may we and everyone on the pages of this bookcontinue to dream and strengthen each other. DEDICATION Parents love, guide, and teach us in many ways. Often, their ways have not been pleasant, but time has shown that we have profited from them. All of our growing years, though, have not been spent with our parents alone, for in time our lives are shared with teachers who love, understand, enrich, and instruct us dally. It is for their sacrifices, their friendship, and their constant efforts to make us better prepared and happier through life, that we, the Senior Class, proudly dedicate this book. to our parents and Mr. Edgar Wells, Jr., our lovable teacher. Our ninth grade was led by two good presidents, Curtis Simmons and Nola Dean Quinn. Serving with them as other officers were: Ray Westbrook and Carolyn Hines, vice-presidents; Carole Jones and Darrell Kornegay, secretaries; Wade Rhodes and Betty Quinn, treasurers; Braxton Grady and Patsy Kelly, reporters. Some wiener roasts and parties were our main sources of fun. These little parties were always fun because the help from our homeroom teachers. Miss Grace Baker and Mr . E . M. Sills , was great. We surely did appreciate all the things which they did. It wasn ' t long before it was barefooted time again. The summer was crammed with work in the tobacco field. Once and awhile Pepsi time was enjoyed. Soon this freedom was over, and sixty-four brown and jolly sophomores returned inAugust 1954 with new pencils, notebooks , and summer true stories. Some of our nervousness and green feelings had worn off during our freshman year. Checking in our homerooms, we found that Miss Mary Anna Grady and Mrs. Lillian Swain were our homeroom teachers of whom we were very proud. During the year parties and spelling matches thrilled our souls. The good spellers or winning side was usually given a party by the losers. Shortly after mid-examinations, grades were averaged for Beta Club membership. Robert Grady, Curtis Simmons, Richard Harper, George Westbrook, Russell Barnette, Wayland Davis, Connie Wells, Carole Jones, Jean Gautier, Ann Houston, Helen Waller be- came new members. One of our homeroom teachers will blushingly re- member a present received from three crewcuts, Edward, Robert, and Wayland. We had many moments to remember. Our officers are unforgettable because Patsy and Nola Dean were presidents; Betty Rae and Robert, vice-presidents; Ann and Anne, secretaries; George and Curtis, treasurers ; A. V. and Darrell, reporters. Too soon the summer stars held our attention by night, and the tobacco patch held us by day. Hurriedly good old summertime passed, and we were once more on the old orange buses bound for school. Fifty-one happy juniors slowly entered the end room to start their busy eleventh year. sold $1940.60 magazine subscriptions. We were proud of our percentage of the total sale. Wayland, Ray, Curtis and Rubylene won watches for their great work. Another one of our important jobs was the pre- sentation of our play, Cornin ' Round the Mountain. Characters in the play were: Richard, Rubylene, Carole, Mary, Lucy, Connie , Wayland, George, Robert, Ray, Carolyn, and Ryan. In March we had our banquet and it was one of the best yet because we put our hearts into it. An Hawaiian cruise was the theme of the colorful event. The Juniors and the Seniors will long remember that banquet in Hotel Goldsboro. Pleasant to recall also were our class officers. George was president; Ryan, vice-president; Carole, secretary; Carolyn, treasurer; Connie, reporter. Our homeroom teacher was Mr. Edgar J. Wells who, we think, is the most wonderful teacher we have ever had. This is not to say that we did not love our past teachers who were also dear. Wiener roasts, picnic s , skating , and going to Greenville filled the year with more memories. After a three months vacation the school doors began to swing open again, and we gladly passed through them once more. As seniors we entered our homeroom the first day of our last year and found to our great surprise and joy that Mr. Edgar Wells was our teacher. Knowing the work ahead of us, we plunged right in and elected our class officers. With Ryan or Robert leading the class meetings, we soon decided to have dances every other Wednesday night in our gymnasium and to use bop, square, and round dance records. Calling cards have already been received and ex- changed, and our invitations have been selected. The class enjoyed a wonderful Christmas party in the school cafeteria. We shall never forget the present that Mr. Edgar Wells received from someone special whose name starts with T. Naturally all of us have loafed a little and others have had narrow escapes, but we have pulled the right trick most of the time to stay out of serious trouble. Two-hour exams have probably caused us the most troublesome headaches. Recently, the bus man came to discuss the class trip to Washington, D. C. and New York. We decided to go both places as well as to West Point on a decker bus. We can hardly wait. We would like to thank Mr. Edgar Wells for all One of the first joys was the selection of a class- his help, patience , and guidance he has given us during ring. We had a mad time selecting the color of the ring. After a long and heated discussion, we made up our minds to get green sets. Everybody was tickled pink. At last the rings came and the happiness of that day will never be forgotten I am sure. Our next enjoyment of the year was the day that we started our magazine sales. Two leaders were chosen and each took sides. The losing side gave the winning team a party at Griffin ' s. After many calls, knocks, and barking hounds stopped, we had made and our happy junior and senior years. We just could not have gotten along without him. Now, the senior play and graduation in white caps and gowns lie just around the corner for forty-eight members. It will be sad to separate and to go our different ways after twelve memorable years together. Still our individual experiences and growth must con- tinue, so let us always try to be good, friendly, honest, and useful as we live today and face tomorrow. Carole Jones Testatrix SMOKES GETS INTO MY EYES CLASS PROPHECY AUTUMN LEAVES Ten years have swiftly passed by and now as I cruise around in my pink Cadillac with my hound dog sleeping lazily beside me, he reminds me of LINWOOD RHODES, a classmate, who used to sleep most of the time . My hound dog sniffed several times and led me to the home of Linwood. He is on a short vacation from his positionas comedian on the Ed Sullivan Show. As I was driving along with my dog, now sleeping soundly beside me, I saw CAROLE JONES and her three children. She, Odell and the children are living in Kinston. I ran into a meeting of a Bachelors Club, where BRAXTON GRADY, LESLIE WILLIAMS, and RAY WESTBROOKare members. They own large farms. I discovered CLYSTIA HOLT was giving a lecture on the art of how to get a wife. She never did marry and is still flirty as ever. As I was on my way to Jacksonville to see SYBIL SUTTON and GERALINE ROUSE, where they are holding positions as telephone operators, I discovered I was speeding when two patrolmen pulled up beside me. I didn ' t get a ticket be- cause they were two of my old classmates DAN WALLACE and JEROME SPOONY PAGE. They ' re still mischievous as ever even though they are trying to enforce the law. I hadalready decided if Ievergotin trouble, who my lawyer would be; MORRIS THIGPEN. He always could talk and now I find him one of the leading lawyers in the eastern U. S. A. BILL HILL and BRYCE WILLIAMS are coaching basketball. Bill is at E. M. I. at Salem- burg and Bryce is at good old Grady. On the way back from Jacksonville, I saw where MARGIE JONES lives. She is keeping house for Leo and their five children. When I came through Kinston, I saw the of- fice that JEAN GAUTIER and MARY HERRING work in. Mary is supervisor over Jean. I ran into CAROLYN HINES, GLADYS MURPHY, and MAR Y E L L E N MARE AD Y . They ' re working at Dupont, and are happily married. RICHARD HARPER is now editor of the Albertson Observer. DARRELL KORNEGAY is his art editor, and he also does commercial art work in Raleigh. ROBERT GRADY and EDWARD HOLMES are in the corn Mill business. RYAN SMITH and W A Y L A N D DAVIS are farming. They ' re both married and rearing children. Louise Gufford is their very efficient secretary. She and her family also live in Warsaw. GEORGE WESTBROOK has his own office in Mt. Olive as a dentist. Everybody seems to like his work. DWIGHT WALKER is a Mechanical Engineer at Detroit, Michigan. He and Elaine and their three children are doing fine. Tired and out of gas, I passed BETTY RAE QUINN, J. W. and their three children, to whom I told a short joke. After a big laugh from an old joke, I collected my four yelling girls who aroused the dreamy-eyed hound dog. I, then, returned to my lonesome husband.
