cuss UlSIORV In August 1950, seventy-eight eager youngsters entered the high school halls of dear old Grady. Everything at first seemed so odd and different, but we soon became active in many mem- orable ways. With Shelby Southerland and Lester Britt as class presidents and Miss Thelma Dilday, Miss Margaret Smith, and Mr, Morton Sills as our able guides, we had a most success- ful freshman year. Our sophomore year was filled with more parties as well as adventures for the sixty -six of us that returned. Miss Mary Anna Grady and the grade mothers honored her section with a Christmas party in the homeroom, Mrs. Lillian Swain ' s section was also favored with a party at the home of Norma Allan Smith, Betty Smith, Jo Ann Grady, Peggy Grady, Shelby Southerland, L. G. Kornegay, Gerald Simmons, Mary Louise Waters, Alfred Thigpen, and Nellie Faye Parker became members of the Beta Club. With Betty and Gerald serving as class presidents along with our guides. Miss Grady and Mrs. Swain, the year happily passed. A summer filled with work and a little play soon passed too. Fifty-five tan juniors were together again. This year held many pleasant surprises. First among these was picking our class ring, and second, selling magazines. We chose a ring with royal blue sets around which is the name of the school. Before selling magazines, the class was divided in two sides, Betty Smith was leader of one side; L. G. Kornegay, leader of the other. When the sell-race was over, L, G ' s side had won, and it was given a party by the losers. Our play, Just Ducky , was a happy success. Before our long awaited Christmas holidays began, we had a merry Christmas party in the home of Lou Gene Smith, Everyone had loads of fun. Later came the one big thing in 1953 we all had lived for--the Junior-Senior Banquet. It was beautifully given in Hotel Kinston, Kinston, North Carolina on March 27. This colorful event we will never forget or will we forget the work done by Mrs, Alice Davis, our homeroom teacher and excellent guide. It was not long before the ninth month of school ended, and we were at last seniors. When school opened August 18, there were forty-eight lively and dignified seniors some of which still have sideline chairs on the window side. Everyone was tickled to get away from to- bacco and together again. At first we all were in the Battle of the Gnats, but this year will have been filled with greater as well as unforgettable experiences. After the class officers were elected, we decided to sponsor a square dance every other Wednesday night in our gymnasium with music by the Rhythm 4 plus 1, We have had overflow crowds and good dances. Calling cards, caps an ' gowns, and invitations were ordered. Already we have exchanged calling cards. The homeroom will long remember those wild minutes. Two members of our family, Norma Allan Smith and Edwin Hill, won the Harvest Festival race for king and queen, and they were crowned Mr. and Miss B, F. Grady. Ideas, disagree- ments, and hands came up many times before we decided about our trip this spring. Plans have been made to leave on May 14 for Washington and from there to New York. We can hardly wait, folks. Names were drawn for our Christmas party which was at Betty Smith ' s house December 21. Everybody had a wonderful time playing, bunny hopping, eating, and opening presents. We are holding hands, putting heads together, and burning a bit of midnight oil to meet our annual deadline, January 20. It is bound to be good. Still we await our Senior Play, the Junior -Senior Banquet, our Baccalaureate Sermon and white gowns, and Graduation. With the wonderful help and guidance of Mr. Ralph Gurley and Mr. Edgar Wells, I feel and believe that each one of us has accomplished something of good. What we will do and where we will go in the future is yet to be seen, but I am sure that God will continue to keep everyone on the right track for happiness and success so that one day we will meet again after death. Historian: Shelby Southerland
