cmss PROPH[CV As I sit here during our Class Day Exercises, I can picture in my mind our Class of ' 53 in 1963. I see Shirley Britt and Laura Alice as graduates of Bowman Gray Hospital. Shir- ley has captured her high school dream man and Laura is working as private nurse in Pink Hill. Ernest is a patrolman. As a sideline, he is in a well-known quartet, his own group. Gwyn majored in child education while at East Carolina. She and Snowball are using it wisely, for they have several brats all their own. Audrey is happily settled near Red Hill as a preacher ' s wife and a religious edu- cator. She and Clara Lee Kornegay went to school together. Clara Lee is now a mis- sionary in China. Ida Rouse has established a fine kindergarten school at Albertson. She keeps several of her classmates ' kids while they work, including Mildred ' s and Delano ' s. Mildred has her own TV program at Pink Hill, since she is our latest female Bing Crosby. The new editor of the Outlaw ' s Bridge Times is Shirley Smith, who is now Mrs. Dove lie Outlaw. Robert has established a large tobacco industry near Kinston. He even has a private secretary, Dixie, and a private telephone operator, Velma. Velma ' s high school chum, Katie, works as a secretary in Kinston. Robert says the three girls keep the telephone lines hot. Elbert and J. W. helped out our Uncle Sam a little while. Elbert is making the Gy-renes his career. J. W. is now busy supervising work on his plantation near Watersville, N. C. Annie Bruce and Ruby Powell almost rocked A.C. clear out of Wilson while there. They are both secretaries for bachelor millionaires. Could they be interested in the millionaires ' millions, or does Annie Bruce still fall for black wavy hair ? William Dail is in the Navy. As a sideline he writes those wild stories like he did in high school, for Life magazine. Everleene is cin X-ray technician at Wilson. She coaches the Nurses ' Staff bas- ketball team there. Ruby Grey and Bruce are starring in a hit Broadway musical as a dance team. Bruce still likes his Pink Hill girls, and Ruby her Cadets. John Henry is a lawyer in Duplin County and is in position for the next County Judge. Arbutus and Nelson had a June wedding and she is now one of the outstanding Home Demonstration women for the county. Viola is settled near La Grange with her high school boy friend. She and Lena Bruce work in the telephone office there as operators. Donn is an outstanding music teacher. He specializes in teaching high school glee club. Adrian is still taking Nannie Lou to every show that comes to Mount Olive, but now he takes their little girl along, also. Dulan is choir director of several Baptist churches around here. He has lost the name of Class Baby now. Betty is head ticket agent for the drive-in theater at Woodrow ' s. Margaret is one of the top beauticians of the South. She specializes in hair styling and massages . Now coaching the basketball team at State College, we find our own Lynn Harper. He is doing a fine job of it, too. Irene is head cheerleader for Alan ' s baseball team. Alan says she can yell, too. Morris is playing professional football now and making a real name for himself. Thar on is Jimmy ' s private secretary. They are running service stations in Deep Run. Joyce and Clara Lee Quinn are both nurses in the new hospital at Kenansville. Joyce is day supervisor and Clara Lee is night supervisor. Eugene has an eight -piece band which plays for all the dances anywhere around, since he has taken the Rhythm Four ' s place. Martha Sue is now working in Warsaw and living there. She is slowly but surely losing her bashfulness. Somewhere along the way, I see for myself a rosy future, and hope that it will come true. Prophetess: Annie Lois Grady

cuss HISTOliY In August, 1949 , we, the Class of 1 953, made our green appearance in high school. We were not noticeably shy after the newness of the promotion rubbed off. It was not long before many of our members became active, especially in the F.F.A., F.H.A., and other clubs . How well I remember our mysterious glances at the stuck-up Seniors, and how we longed to have their privileges. Under the keen eyes of Miss Dil- day and Mr. Sills, our guides, we soon began to get the high school swing. With Shirley Ann Smith serving as the class president, the year happily passed and we had grown to be lively Sophomores. So many Sophomores were we that the class was divided into two parts; Mrs. Swain (Miss Hofler) and Miss Grady were our advisors. Shirley Ann Smith, Donn Wells, J. W. Waters, Shirley Britt, Annie Lois Grady, Annie Bruce Grady, Nannie Lou Jones, Gwyn Kelly, Robert Hines, Morris Sandlin, Velma Heath and Katie Miller nourished the class as Beta Club members. I ' m sure we all remember the lovely ice cream party, as well as the swim we had at Dudley Beach, which was given by Annie Lois and our respective grade pa- rents. We had a lovely party at Ruby ' s home that year, also. Soon - but not soon enough - we were Juniors. We elected as our officers J. W. Waters, President; Shirley Britt, Vice-President; Gwyn Kelly, Secre- tary; Robert (Ro-bear) Hines, Treasurer; and Laura Alice Bryant, Reporter. We gave our Junior Play, Bolts and Nuts , with flying colors. Of course, this credit goes to Mrs. Davis and the play cast: Annie Lois Grady, Donn Wells, Shirley Britt, Shirley Ann Smith, Annie Bruce Grady, Robert Hines, Elbert Garvey, Ruby Powell, J. W. Waters, Bruce Southerland, Ernest Grady, Joyce Oates, and Lynn Harper. Everleene and Gwyn were equally important as prompters. I think we had more fun at Woodrow ' s Famous Hot Dog Stand than we did at play practice. After the play was over, Woodrow Smith and Syl- vester Tew gave the play cast a dance at Maxwell ' s Mill. Shortly after the play, we had our Jimior -Senior Banquet, with the help of Mrs. Davis, our home room teacher. The theme was A Wedding . We honored Mr. and Mrs. Wells on their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. The banquet was given in the Hotel Goldsboro, Goldsboro, North Carolina. We ordered our class rings and had a magazine sale. We were divided into two sides for the sale. The losing side gave the winners a fish fry at Scottie ' s Pool near Mount Olive. Various mem- bers of the Beta Club that were in the Junior Class went to the State Convention in Raleigh. Annie Lois, Robert, Elbert, Gwyn, Annie Bruce, and William Snowball went to Carolina Beach on a week-end beach party. Mr. and Mrs. Perry Grady were chaperons. And now--we are Seniors! My, it seems that only yesterday we were like lost sheep in the corridors of B. F. Grady High. Yet today, we have ordered calling cards, invitations, caps and gowns, and we have had our pictures made for the annual. Our class has decreased since 1949. There are only forty of us now left in the Gypsy Clan. Mr. Johnson is our Senior Advisor, and our officers are as follows: J. W. Waters, President; Shirley Ann Smith, Secre- tary; Donn Wells, Vice-President; Robert Hines, Treasurer; and Shirley Britt, Reporter. The Overflow, basketball, baseball, and dramatics played important parts during the year. And guess what? ? ? Well, since you can ' t. I ' ll tell you. Our Harvest Festival King and Queen, Lynn Harper and Viola Wilkins, were crowned Mr. and Miss B. F. Grady High in the Annual Harvest Festival! Many things that are important to a Senior are yet to come: Our Senior Play, the Junior -Senior Banquet, Baccailaureate Sermon, and finally (sigh) our Graduation. It makes us very sad to know that this is our last year; that we have walked these corridors with a sense of belonging for the last time. Yet, we are brave and we will be prepared for the future with smiling faces, as a true Gypsy should. Historian: Shirley Britt
