cuss HISTOliY In August, 1949 , we, the Class of 1 953, made our green appearance in high school. We were not noticeably shy after the newness of the promotion rubbed off. It was not long before many of our members became active, especially in the F.F.A., F.H.A., and other clubs . How well I remember our mysterious glances at the stuck-up Seniors, and how we longed to have their privileges. Under the keen eyes of Miss Dil- day and Mr. Sills, our guides, we soon began to get the high school swing. With Shirley Ann Smith serving as the class president, the year happily passed and we had grown to be lively Sophomores. So many Sophomores were we that the class was divided into two parts; Mrs. Swain (Miss Hofler) and Miss Grady were our advisors. Shirley Ann Smith, Donn Wells, J. W. Waters, Shirley Britt, Annie Lois Grady, Annie Bruce Grady, Nannie Lou Jones, Gwyn Kelly, Robert Hines, Morris Sandlin, Velma Heath and Katie Miller nourished the class as Beta Club members. I ' m sure we all remember the lovely ice cream party, as well as the swim we had at Dudley Beach, which was given by Annie Lois and our respective grade pa- rents. We had a lovely party at Ruby ' s home that year, also. Soon - but not soon enough - we were Juniors. We elected as our officers J. W. Waters, President; Shirley Britt, Vice-President; Gwyn Kelly, Secre- tary; Robert (Ro-bear) Hines, Treasurer; and Laura Alice Bryant, Reporter. We gave our Junior Play, Bolts and Nuts , with flying colors. Of course, this credit goes to Mrs. Davis and the play cast: Annie Lois Grady, Donn Wells, Shirley Britt, Shirley Ann Smith, Annie Bruce Grady, Robert Hines, Elbert Garvey, Ruby Powell, J. W. Waters, Bruce Southerland, Ernest Grady, Joyce Oates, and Lynn Harper. Everleene and Gwyn were equally important as prompters. I think we had more fun at Woodrow ' s Famous Hot Dog Stand than we did at play practice. After the play was over, Woodrow Smith and Syl- vester Tew gave the play cast a dance at Maxwell ' s Mill. Shortly after the play, we had our Jimior -Senior Banquet, with the help of Mrs. Davis, our home room teacher. The theme was A Wedding . We honored Mr. and Mrs. Wells on their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. The banquet was given in the Hotel Goldsboro, Goldsboro, North Carolina. We ordered our class rings and had a magazine sale. We were divided into two sides for the sale. The losing side gave the winners a fish fry at Scottie ' s Pool near Mount Olive. Various mem- bers of the Beta Club that were in the Junior Class went to the State Convention in Raleigh. Annie Lois, Robert, Elbert, Gwyn, Annie Bruce, and William Snowball went to Carolina Beach on a week-end beach party. Mr. and Mrs. Perry Grady were chaperons. And now--we are Seniors! My, it seems that only yesterday we were like lost sheep in the corridors of B. F. Grady High. Yet today, we have ordered calling cards, invitations, caps and gowns, and we have had our pictures made for the annual. Our class has decreased since 1949. There are only forty of us now left in the Gypsy Clan. Mr. Johnson is our Senior Advisor, and our officers are as follows: J. W. Waters, President; Shirley Ann Smith, Secre- tary; Donn Wells, Vice-President; Robert Hines, Treasurer; and Shirley Britt, Reporter. The Overflow, basketball, baseball, and dramatics played important parts during the year. And guess what? ? ? Well, since you can ' t. I ' ll tell you. Our Harvest Festival King and Queen, Lynn Harper and Viola Wilkins, were crowned Mr. and Miss B. F. Grady High in the Annual Harvest Festival! Many things that are important to a Senior are yet to come: Our Senior Play, the Junior -Senior Banquet, Baccailaureate Sermon, and finally (sigh) our Graduation. It makes us very sad to know that this is our last year; that we have walked these corridors with a sense of belonging for the last time. Yet, we are brave and we will be prepared for the future with smiling faces, as a true Gypsy should. Historian: Shirley Britt
