COMMANDING OFFICER COMMANDER JAMES T. MCCORMICK UNITED STATES NAVY Commander James T. McCormick was born on January 19, 1941 in Richmond Hill, New York, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas McCormick. Following graduation from Franklin and Marshall College on June 9, 1962 with a BA in Mathematics, he attended Officer Candidate School and was commissioned an Ensign in the Naval Reserve. He augmented into the Regular Navy in January 1965. Commander McCormick served aboard USS MOUNT BAKER lAE4i as Damage Control Assistant then aboard USS WALKER fDD517j as Main Propulsion Assistant and Engineering Officer and then Chief Staff Officer and Staff Operations for Destroyer Division 122. Commander McCormick's most recent sea duty was as Executive Officer USS FRANCIS HAMMOND fFF1067i which he left in January 1974. Commander McCormick attended the Naval Postgraduate School and earned a Masters degree in Operations Research and following that tour served as Senior Naval Advisor to RVN Coastal Flotilla Five in Nam Can Vietnam. Commander McCormick's most recent tour was with the Operations Study Group at the Center for Naval Analyses. Commander McCormick's decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal with Gold Star and Combat Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal. Commander McCormick is married to the former Brenda Worley of Littlestown, Pennsylvania and they have four children: Terri Jo, Timothy, Peter, and Daniel. Due to his skillful ship handling throughout the battle, he was given much of the credit or e vi ry. Commissioning of the present AYLWIN was held on 18 September 1971 at Pier One on the Boston Naval Shipyard. Appropfialely en0U9nv lne USS CONSTITUTION was berthed at the adjacent pier. AYLWIN, the fourth United States warship to bear the name is outfitted with the most recent electronic equipment for del6Clln9 anger communicating with ships, submarines, and aircraft. Main features include the ship's two sonar lunderwater sound detectionj systemS. l mounted ln the hull at the bow, is capable of gaining surface or subsurface contacts at extremely long ranges. The other has a variable depth capability and is towed astern. AYLWIN's principle armament is the homing torpedo. Placed in the general vicinity of an enemy submarine, the torpedo will seek-out and destroy its target. The three systems installed in the ship to deliver the torpedo include: torpedo tubes, the ASROC lAntisubmarine Flocketl launcher' and the LAMPS lLight Airborne Multi P S .
