ON 4 NOVEMBER 1979, THE AMERICAN EMBASSY IN TEHERAN, IRAN WAS SEIZED BY STUDENTS SUPPORTING THE REGIME OF AYATOLLAH KHOMENI. THE CREW OF THE AYLWIN EMPATHIZED WITH THE AMERICAN HOSTAGES AS THEY PATROLLED THE WATERS OF THE PERSIAN GULF. FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE CRISIS AND THROUGH TWO LONG EXTENSIONS THE CREW MAINTAINED THEIR VIGIL IN THE GULF. AFTER THIRTY-FIVE CONSECUTIVE DAYS ON PATROL AT SEA THE AYLWIN WAS RELIEVED ON STATION AND WAS ABLE TO RETURN HOME3 THE HOSTAGES WERE NOT. THEREFORE IT IS ONLY FITTING THAT THIS CRUISEBOOK BE DEDICATED TO THE HOSTAGES IN IRAN IN THE HOPE THAT THEIR FREEDOM MAY SOON BE SECURED. L.. W,.,a,SAM.4a.Amaw4uxm'amxms-. . +..4..a.m. .aa -L
