The year IS 1967 and the war that had broken out 1n 1964 IS just comrng to a close Amerrca has nsen from e battle as the vrctor but rt 1S a very tlred vrctor that the world sees As I walk about some of the battlements 1n southem Europe I remember that the day 1S May 23 exactly ten years SIIICC my graduatron from Ayersvllle H1gh School I wonder howmyclassmates have survrved these past ten years back home rn the states Before the war JIM HA MMERSMITH had been workrng as a top notch manager of one of the leadxng factor1es the country Undoubtedly he was very successful in hrs work for bus1ness had been boommg durrng the war years Super1ntendent ROBERTA STEVENS and Ass1stant Supermtendent JANET EICHENA UER had gamed renown as nurses at the World Hosprtal rn Ontario Canada Therr servrce to the world was mdeed great for they had d1s covered a cure for the common cold BOB PETERS owner of the Kroger Stores 1n Amerrca was the sponsor of th1s hospltal He consrdered 1t a very worth whrle pro3ect BILL HARADER President of the Murphy Company also had dBC1d6d to 10111 w1th Bob III promotmg th1s proJect B111 had garned 111115 off1ce by the retrrement of the former presrdent In northern Europe I had seen and talked with Colonel LESLIE SMITH He had 1o1ned the army shortly after graduat1on and had dec1ded to make Ih1S hrs career He was enjoymg every leave he could get He had mf med me that GENE WEIDENHA MER and LARRY MEYER were co heads of the expend1tnre department of the Au' For They were on the1r way to England to try and d1scover a leak m the expense budget plan they estab11shed there Workmg m New York as a Secret SBFVICB man for the Presrdent was ED KUNESH I remembered that rn our hrgh school days he had had much experrence rn Ih1S l1ne of work by guard1ng h1s father s apple orchard Colonel Sm1th also told me that MARY JEAN LEININGER and her srster MARLENE were runn1ng a motel IH the state of Flor1da It was a very profrtable busrness for them The name of their famous motel was Aunt Bertha s Dellght Another Classmate MARCIA KUBICA owned a nrghtclub nearby Her featured attractlon was GARY McADOW and h1s Hound Dog Band GARY NEFF h1s featured trumpet player owned a barbershop rn Tampa and often traveled w1th the band when buslness was slack As I traveled on south I dec1ded to v1s1t the Nat1ona1 Laboratory of Chemrsts where famous chemtsts from all parts of the world came to pool their rdeas on research There I recogntzed MARV HOHENBERGER, and by talk mg w1th h1m I leamed that after graduauon from college he had dec1ded to play professronal basketball Srnce there wasn t enough money 1l'l lt for h1m he had turned to Chemrstry He mformed me that workmg as secre tarres for the organ1zat1on were JANICE KENNEDY and LINDA MANSFIELD, two of the most able women tn therr f1eld Both were l1v1ng together m Par1s and were thoroughly enJoy1ng then l1fe there Thrnktng that perhaps they mrght fu.rn1sh me w1th more 1nformat1on I dec1ded to pay a call on them They told me that RUTH ANN GIBLE2 and RUTH ANN FULLER were the Jornt owners of the Shake Rattle and Roller R1nk rn Fort Wayne lndrana They had some very lovely murals on the walls of therr rrnk wh1ch had been parnted by RACHEL MORRIS She was really a successful commercral BIIISI and only d1d th1s for a pastlme Jan1ce and Lmda also told me that ELDENE SCHALL and BARBARA ASHBAC HER had fulfrlled then amb1t1on to become laboratory techn1c1ans They had Just patented a new l1fe savlng serum whrch was supposed to cure the common cold SANDRA BABINGERwas workrng l1'1 the same hospttal asa nurses ard 1n her spare t1me Otherwrse she was very busy manag1ng her hockey nnk MARLENE H01-IENBERGH2 wa trymg to teach mathematrcs to the Eskrmos 1n Alaska and was apparently havmg success Just as I was leavmg Jan1ce and Lrnda a call came for JSHICC from another of our classmates DIANN KEMPER I managed to talk w1th her for a few moments and learned that she was workrng as the head accolmtant for a large msurance flrm rn New York She told me that FAYE WISEMAN who was now a noted ha1r stylrst had just signed a contract w1th 20th Century Fox to des1gn new styles excluslvely for them LARRY GREENLER and JOHN ZIM MERMAN were runnrng a bulldozrng outfrt for the SeeBees They were preparmg at the present t1me to wrden the mouth of the MISSISSIPPI Rxver As I left Par1s I recogn1zed my fellow war correspondent JOE WALDMAN During the war he had lost h1s left arm and part of hrs eyesrght Otherwrse he was 1n very good health We drscussed our old classmates tn an out door cafe and marveled at the success everyone seemed to be havrng Fmally II was t1me to leave and as I walked on down the cobblestone street and boarded the boat that was to carry me back across the Englrsh Channel to England I wondered how well all my classmates would be farrng lll another ten years A l1ce Williams . . . . . . . - th . : . . . . .
