The Annual Staff hopes that everything has been portrayed exactly as you the students see it. Qedie tetl To The One l l e Love During the past four years, the students of Ayden High School have met a teacher who is most probably in a class all her own. She has led us in the classroom, and has given her spare time to make each student a vital asset in our school. She is a teacher, a counselor, and most of all, an inspiring person. The Annual Staff dedicates the 1969 Wheel to Mrs. “O.” Smith. 2 iiujk Sdooi Hodi tmlJm UoL XXXOSS 5 6 8 9 AYDEN 73 0 Gaston 40 0 Knapp 41 6 Swansboro 20 0 North Lenior 25 0 Camden 1 24 Farmville 27 12 Greene Central 40 0 Bath 12 13 Pamlico Countj 19 6 Mantco 47 9 RobersonviUe 22 21 Weldon 14 13 Red Springs Coaches: Thomas Speller, Assistant Coach; Coach Bill Kluttz, Head Coach; Charles Dunn, J.V. Plagued by injuries, the Ayden Tornadoes battled their way to a 14-13 win over Red Springs to capture the State Class “A” Championship. Although there were disheartening defeats to FarmviUe, and Pamlico, the Tornadoes gained a Play off berth via the Tidewater Conference and went on to win. This was the first year Ayden has been hurt so badly by injuries. Every Starter was hurt at least once during the season. In spite of this our team settled down and continued the winning tradition of Ayden High School. Hill, Short, Gibson, Eason, Oakley, Wilson, McLawhom, Booth, Smith, Loftin, Harris. The throne was backed by a series of red curtains, and the bandstand was decorated as an English pavilion. Ayden’s Homecoming for 1968-196 9-one certainly worth remembering. 31 Honeeonia Qaeen HOMECOMING QUEEN 1968-69 Jackie 32 Junhi ' Seniof 68 Our 1968 Junior-Senior was held at the Greenville Country Club. The theme of “Romance in Venice” was depicted by a flower- filled gondola passing under a bridge covered with ivy. Music for the evening was provided by “The Inmates” of Raleigh. Honored as King and Queen were David McGlohon and Judy Corbett, although both of them were rather hard to find. A typically American incentive in the minds of ’69 graduates today is the chance to get aliead. You may have worked particularly hard in one course to acquire extra knowledge, or you may have practiced many hours to become a member on a school team. If so, you were actually doing “something extra” to get ahead. It is our hope that you will continue to prepare yourself, through additional education and the application of your personal attributes, so that you may achieve personal satisfaction in your future endeavors. The 1969 Wheel staff does not feel so. We give equal respect to aU classes, hoping that they may honor each other. This year’s Wheel staff hopes the annual has successfully preserved the memories of the past school year. Within this book is the tangible proof that we are a unified school. One that works together to keep it in a class of its own, in a golden age. From the very beginning of the school year the staff has worked diligently to give you the 1969 Wheel. I am truly grateful and very fortunate to have worked with such a wonderful group of people who taught me and learned with me. Without them I would have been lost. Many thanks go to my business manager, Ann Miller, who really worked hard to give this annual the financial support it needed. I must also give thanks to my advisor, Mrs. Noble, who gave me the drive to push forward, and to my parents, who gave me courage and understanding when 1 needed it the most. Working as editor of the 1969 Wheel has been the most rewarding task I have ever undertaken. To the 1970 Wheel editor and staff, I offer a challenge and my best wishes to accomplish it.
