What are these mem- ories? Where do they come from? They are remem- brances of our high school life, to be locked in the mind ' s t r e a s u r e chest for pleasant recall in later years. They come from every thing we ' ve ever seen, said, or done, during our stay in high school. These, our high school memories, are many: the final mastering of our hardest subjects; the development of unsuspected talents within ourselves; our leaders, who direct our thinking and increase our knowl- edge; that one special boy or girl who makes the heart beat faster and the pulse rate rise; or the realization of a job completed when commencement day arrives and a voice inside says, Well done. These things, easy to remember, yet so hard to forget, are the treasures of our minds. These are the things we look back on with pleasant recollection, for. . . For the two seasons previous to his resignation, Coach Tripp ' s football teams were conference and district champions. Last year his basketball players placed third in the state. Ayden High suffered a double loss in 1962 when Coach resigned. Mr. Tripp was also a teacher of history and government until last year. His patience, friendliness, and concern for a superior athletic program will never be forgotten. We, the Student Council, dedicate this annual to Coach Tripp with great pride. Mr. Johnson was the principal of Ayden High School for nineteen years. These were years of progress and development that have blazed their i m pr i nt on the school ' s history. In addition to being principal, he ad- ministered drivers ' education. Before becoming principal, Mr, Johnson was a coach and a teacher of physical edu- cation at Ayden High School. Progress in scholastic fields and in physical education were not his only contributions to the students. He was sincerely interested in each student as an individual and set a moral example for all. Spirit and pride that have clearly bettered our school were boosted by him. In 1962, when Mr. Johnson re- signed, a great loss was evident to everyone. We proudly dedicate this annual to one who has provided such a strong hand in guiding us in the past. MRS. GUYLA CLARK Business Education Our teachers escape to the lounge to be refortified. 8 MRS. Under the directors ' capable leadership, Shy Guy was a solid hit. Those who participated in the play will always remember the fun and heartaches of this production. Every night for a month, practices were held: requiring lines to be learned, repetition of scenes, costumes to be made, scenery to get, and make-up to develop. Finally the big night came, bringing with it success. With this play many new friends were made. All those who took part in the play will always have wonderful memories of this never-to-be-forgotten occasion. 34 Student Council The Student Council is the student governing body made up of representatives from each class and club. The 1961-62 Tornadoes ' Basketball team brought home three trophies to complete our trophy case. With the expert guidance of Coach Tripp, our team sped on to numerous victories. Having only one loss in the con- ference standings, the Tornadoes claimed the conference championship and took the District Championship also. The much awaited day came when we c he e r e d the Tornadoes on their way to Durham. The easy living at the Holiday Inn did not spoil their determination to win for their alma-mater. They pulled through with flying colors their first game of the week. With practice and fortitude, they played a close game Friday night with Warrenton. After the typing point by a Warrenton player. the score was tied through three overtimes. With less than two minutes to go in the fourth overtime, Warrenton led Ayden by five points. With one second to go the lead was lowered to only three points but that was not enough to put the Tornadoes ahead. Although the loss of the game was disappointing, the team rousted to victory the following evening and won third place in the State Class A Tournaments. The students, faculty, and citizens of Ayden were extremely proud of our Tornado team and the trophies andremembrance will always remain as a part of Ayden High School. MR . TOMMY LEWIS Head Coach The Ayden High Tornadoes are very proud of our present coaching staff. Tommy Lewis, our head coach, is with us for the first season, and has done an out- standing job in football by leading the Tornadoes to the position of runner-up in the Eastern Regional Championship. With Coach Lewis ' s strong leadership and devoted assistance , the Tornadoes can look forward to many suc- cessful seasons in the future . Tommy Craft, our assistant coach, has been with the Tornadoes for a number of years. He has served as line coach for the girls ' basketball team. His capable guidance is appreciated by both boys and girls. We should also give credit to Bob Reynolds for his a ble as- sistance throughout the football season. It is certainly appreci- ated. MR. High school graduates are all good men, filled with enthusiasm and the desire to make good in life. You can put 10 high school graduates to work in the same department of a company - each doing the same kind of work and with the same opportunity to learn and advance. At the end of a year, two or three will be at the top of their group - the rest will be where they started. Why? Because real value always rises to the top. The more you put into a job, the more you get out of it. You must give more to your jobs before you can expect more out of them. Maintain at all times a positive, constructive, progressive attitude toward your jobs. Always think in terms of how things can be done - never in terms of why they can- not. E. I. MORTON ' S BAKERY AND RESTAURANT Greenville, North Carolina JANE SHOP Greenville, North Carolina GOODSON FLANAGAN INS. Greenville, North Carolina Spring 1963 Gentlemen: This letter is to you, the businessmen and leaders of our community; you, to whom we look with admiration and respect. You are the people who make so many things possible for us: you help to back this annual and the school play; you charter buses for our athletic teams; you support our sports program with both your money and your at- tendance. In other words, you support us; the youth of today, the adults of tomorrow. To you, who are truly our friends, we open our hearts and from the very bottom of them we extend a hearty and much felt vote of thanks. Thank you one and all! Sincerely yours.
