Cfadd .HLA tory There came to the Ayden Primary Building in the year 1939 eighty six curious flrst graders llth wide eyes we beheld the abode wherein we were to launch on that most elementary period of ed ucatlon How frightened and unacquainted we were that day, the many horrors of school life which we had heard of now confronted us However, under the excellent supervlsmon and tender guidance of lies Oland and Kiss Taylor we became fondly attached to this adventurous epoch of learnlng and to each other Hot many weeks passed before we became famihar with the musty odors of old books and sweaty desks We spent most of our first year llstenmg to stories and learnlng to read The second year we met lies Sumrell and Miss Price Studies were a httle more advarcsd but nearly the same as the year before Our first school social event was the Easter party that year at Miss Sumrell's home Everyone was fascinated Miss Dawson and Miss Byrd held the floor our third year The new attract1on was modellng clay which helped to develop our creatlve and imaginative ab1l1ty le were separated our fourth year, with lies Freeman's class at the h1gh school bu11d1ng and lisa Ambrose's class at the primary buildlng Arzthmetic and geography were our greatest worry, but nevertheless we thrived and progressed For some of us the fifth year was the flrst year at the h1gh school bulldlllg, ard we were meek and timid: but the idea of two recesses a day dehghted us Mies Crawford and Mmss Eure sent us to the next grade with a little more knowledge ard a llttle less timidity lies stllldlll taught all of us in the s1xth grade ard everyone learred s great deal She was a tall and stately wosmn, always quick to asslst and dlrect her students The varlous war drlves helped to take our minds away from studies lies Dixon managed us very capably 1n the seventh grade We won the P T A attendance con test several tlmes, because she was behind us and urglng us on 1n everythlng that we did That was the year that we made an educatznonal tour of Raleigh lies Corbett and Mrs Freeman taught the elghth grade mmtll Chrlstlasg then H185 Corbett and lrs Bullock completed the year The seventh and elghth grades chartered buses and mde an lnter esting tour of that old and historical city, lilhamsburg, Virglnia le were assxpaed to Mrs Little and Mrs Edwards our freshman year C0l1fUSl0D relgned for a few weeks, but we finally became used to the cont1nual r1ng1ng of the bells and chaos of changing classes The year passed slowly and we were glad to becmne sophomores because then we were no longer the most inferlor class in high school At the beginning of that year we became eligible for memberslup in any club at school The nlne months swiftly passed and we were building a f1ne reputatlon for our class le moved up to lisa Worthington's room our Junior year, but later the class was d1v1ded and lr Copeland took part of Miss Worthington left us during the Ch!'1StlllS hol1days and Mr Nel son and Mr Copeland were in charge of us for the reminder of the term Three one act plays were v ry successfully presented under the excellent directlon of Lr Nel son and lrs 0 C Stroud Sr The funds provxded for our Jun1or Senior Banquet which, everyone a greed, was one of the best ever glven in Ayden le were honored to take part 1n the graduatlon exerclses at the close of the year F1ve per sons, having the hlghest scholastic records, were chosen from our group to be marshals They were Madge Smith, Grace Sumrell, Elliott Dixon, Helvm lang, and Jlmmy Dzmn Now we are thirty eight seniors, the largest graduatlng class slnce 1940 Mneteen are left from that group of eighty s1x curious flrst graders, nmeteen others have J01P6d us Mrs Lxttle and llrs lang are our advxsors Our class offlcers are pres1dent Jerry Butt, v1ce presldent Ray Harrington, honorary president Jesse B Jones, secretary Grace Sumrell, treasurer Elliott Dlxon, representatlves Troy Jackson and Ray Harrington le have been rushed thus far this year w1th currzcula as well as extra curr1cula act1v1t1es We have already had several of our money mak1rg proJects and have chosen our semor play It 18 a hilarious comedy entitled For Pete's Sake CContinued Prior to Adsj e lr.-Copeland and Kiss Keuzenkamp were in charge of our home rooms during our sophomore year. . us.
