LLASS HISTORY In 1937, a group of eager s1x olds began one of the n'ost lmportant undertakmgs 1n the1r l1ves that of startmg to school How we had longed for th1s Now we were actually able to be come a part of the glorlous experlences told us by our elders Perhaps for a few weeks our class of seventy n1ne brlght ey ed youngsters were the hap prest chlldren ln the world We were overJoyed at the thought of bemg together all day w1th l1t tle to do Just gab' and play however our attltude soon changed when we found out that school llfe was not to be that easy The flrst few weeks were conducted prlmarxly for the purpose of gettmg us acquamted wnth our classmates teachers and the 1dea of gomg to school We soon became accustomed to the routme and thoroughly hked lt Our fzrst fom' years were spent at the prrmary Bu1ld1ng w1th few hrgh pomts of lnterest We after addmg many proverblal grey ha1rs to our young heads learned to reclte our mu1t1 plicatlon tables, to read wrlte and get a long wlth others Durrng our thrrd year we gave an operetta Th1s was really somethlng to behold Because of our lnborn prlde you could not touch our heads w1th a ten foot pole The glrls wore the1r flrst even1ng dresses and the boys thexr flrst long pants Altogether rt was a qlllte a gala occaslon Durmg that year we also had a band It was hardly comparable to that of Harry James but we were a very classy 11ttle bunch We gave several concerts In the fxfth grade we moved to the hrgh school Bulldlng yes r1ght up there w1th the Sen 1ors Th1s had a large effect on our personalltles as well as on our appearances There really IS not a thxng wrong wlth fifth graders wearmg make up IS there? Our mothers dlsagreed though Th1s year was spent m much the same mammer as the others had been w1th a few addl tlons to our studles In the sxxth and seventh grades we spent much of our t1me collectxng 1ron and scrap paper for the war effort Our class also helped ln a blg way to push the sale of defense stamps to ard our brothers who were glvmg the1r tlme and many unfortunate ones thelr l1ves At last we reached the erghth grade Th1s year was very appealmg to us for xt meant that we were to be upstairs to be able to change classes and to learn the meamng of the rlngmg of the many bells Yes It meant a great deal to us for we now felt that we were def1n1tely a part of that ever changmg wheel of hlgh school llfe constantly turmng It was durmg that year that a v1s1t was made to our capltal Clty Ralelgh We chartered a bus and spent the ent1re day v1s1t mg the many pomts of hrstorlcal lnterest such as the Cap1to1 Governor'sMans1on State Pen1 The next year we became a member of Ayden Hlgh 1n reallty Whlle 1n the mnth grade many members of our class became actlve partlclpants in athletlcs and the var1ous school clubs We were progress1ng rapldly 1n our school career Startlng wlth twelve steps to cllmb and now havmg reached four of them we had l1ttle or no 1dea what the remarmng four would hold m store for us Om' Sophomore year found us lookmg forward w1th great ant1c1pat1on to the Jumor Semor Banquet at whlch many of us served Attendmg that banquet made us all consclous of the fact that the next one would be glven by us and we were openly determlned that It would be the best one never to be forgotten The Jolly Jumors began planmng thelr banquet early ln the ensumg year Our theme was Hltch Your Wagon To A Star and we had an orchestra It was a tremendous success and was enyoyed by all Bemg ln the graduatlon exerclses was another hlghllght of that year We were both thrllled and proud beyond words The marshalls were Helen Joyce Whltehurst Arlene Joyner Ramona Taylor Barbara Llttle and Chref Jamce Turnage The goal whlch at one t1me seemed unattamable that of becomlng a Semor has been rea ched We have cllmbed the last of those twelve steps but l1tt1e do we reallze that the cllmbmg IS actually Just begmmng as we take our places on the road of l1fe Our class offlcers are Mary Al1ce Brown pres1dent Guy Wnlson v1ce pres1dent, Arlene Joyner Secretary, Ramona Taylor Treasurer and Lou Dall reporter Th1s year has held many pleasant memorles and experlences Grand G1rl mu' sen1or play, was very good Each practlce of the play holds some cherlshed memory We are lookxng forward to our tr1p to Washmgton D C ln the sprlng and of course to om' graduatron on May 27 1949 Now we are only twenty s1x of that happy seventy mne who started to school ln 37 w1th out a care 1n the world We regret the fact that all of us could not contmue together but those who lagged behlnd falled to real1ze that 1nto each lxfe some ra1n must fall and they apparent ly were not ready to face the showers Graduatlon tlme draws mgh and we must be prepared to take our place 1n lxfe We depart from Ayden Hrgh School leaving all but the cher1shed memorxes that no one could take away We have God alone to look to for d1v1ne gmdance We ask of H1m not money or materlal wealth but knowledge wlsdom and strength to sustam us 1n our 11fe to come -4'-f 12 QCP '1 , A . . . . - KK 1 . , v ' 7 7 7 ' , . . . , . .- 7 I ' 1 , . -- , ' . - - . - , . . , . . . . , Q . . . . l , 7 7 ' 7 7 , . y ' ' a s 9 ' tentlary, and var1ous other highlights. 7 , . , KK - 77 l . . . . ll . 73 . . 0 I . , 7 7 7 7 ' a 7 ' ' a , ' .
