7963 GOVERNOR VOL. 2 CHARLES B. AYCOCK HIGH SCHOOL PIKEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA I i This year was basically the same as any high school year; we studied, had fun, experienced sad moments of trial and error. There were games and dances; voices were hoarse from Pep Rallies. There were brief moments of glory for some of us in sports, musical and dramatic productions. All shared the hopeless reality of examinations and deadlines, the semester grades, the noontime cafeteria rush. These impressions are only a few that were packed into this full year. Credit for the production of this book goes to the loyal Governor Staff, who has strived to put into pictures and words a truly unforgettable year. It is not today that you will appreciate the Governor. Tomorrow, when it is not easy to think back on 1963, we will treasure the memories this book has stored for us. The following statement will always hold true: DEDICATION We, the Governor staff of Charles B. Aycock, wish to express our gratitude to two people who have meant so much to our school and community through their generosity and support. Realizing the inadequacy of any tribute we can pay them, we proudly dedicate this volume to Mrs. J. W. Rose and the late Dr. Rose, with deep appreciation for their wisdom and friendship. CAMPUS A mall of concrete and steel atop an inac- cessible hill. This is Charles B. Aycock, but taking a closer look we see that the view gives us but a hint of its special meaning. Ask one of the teachers who toil here, a student who has begun his adult life here, an athlete who has known both victory and defeat for her glory and you will soon find that it is more. It is a fortress of spirituality, of knowledge, of love. It is our school. It is our life. It is our love. COUNTY ADMINISTRATION TOM BENTON, Assistant Superintendent WAYNE COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION Mr. Casey, Mr. Aycock, Mrs. Strickland, Mr. Aycock, Mr. Davis, Mr. Proctor SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION Through his advanced planning and consideration for each student and staff member, Mr. Paschal has aided us in upholding our school standards. JERRY PASCHAL, Principal Mr. McNerney, as school counselor, is always glad to sit down with us and discuss our current problems. LOCAL SCHOOL BOARD R. E. Harry Sasser demonstrates his ability. OPERATING A SLIDE IS A SKILL Mr. Joyner explains this math problem in the simplest of terms. Mr. Fornecken gets ready for a busy day. SOCIAL STUDIES Mr. Boykin explains the world situation to his students. (It happened right here.) WE FACE MANY WORLD PROBLEMS During the year the Social Studies Depart- ment has completed many projects which have improved their understanding of world affairs. This seems to be a busy day in the Social Studies department. Why is Mr. Atkinson hiding? 16 PHYSICAL EDUCATION Mr. Williams ' P.E. classes take many drill exercises during class periods. He also has a class of advanced P.E. that is utilized by boys in the upper classes. Classwork can be fun. So it seems. EXERCISE BUILDS STRONG BODIES Mrs. Gillikin ' s P.E. girls have participated in various dances as well as different games. Mrs. Gillikin ' s physical education class takes daily exercise. The Charles B. Aycock band spends many hours of hard work in order to entertain us. Under the direction of Mr. Thig- pen this has been a very successful year. At the end of first semester the members received new uniforms. The uniforms were purchased by the Aycock Booster ' s Club. MUSIC DEPARTMENT HARMONY IS THE KEY NOTE The chorus has made many public appearances this year. Each has been rewarding. 18 COMMERCIAL DEPARTMENT Notehand is a new course that has been introduced in our com- mercial department this year. The sticlc is not always nec- essary. Kenneth Smith and Jimmy King are engulfed in Mr, Thompson ' s con- versation. ALL KEYS ARE NOT MUSICAL Mr. Edward ' s fifth period makes every minute count, especially Johnny and his eraser. 19 AGRICULTURE DEPARTMENT FARMERS LEARN BY DOING Mr. Ballance ' s boys apply the knowledge of books with that of practical knowledge. HOME ECONOMICS Mrs. Jackson ' s girls work hard to meet deadline. GIRLS LEARN USEFUL ARTS Mrs. Scott ' s girls have leisure time after the Fashion Show. 21 JOURNALISM CLASS PUBLISHING THE EDUCATOR Mr. Roberts discusses putting the paper to bed. During the current year the Journalism class has been very successful in pub- lishing our school paper. The paper appears once a month in conjunction with the Goldsboro News Argus. Most of the Journalism students par- ticipate in compiling the yearbook. The class was fortunate this year in the fact that they attended a convention in New York. They were accompanied on this trip by the Goldsboro class. TRAINEES TODAY, DRIVERS TOMORROW Driver ' s Training has proved help- ful to many students in our school in the past two years. Many bus drivers participate in this program before earning a bus license. This program encourages many safe- ty and courteous gestures for the students. 22 Mr. Mason describes a diagram to some of his students. JANICE ANDERSON— F.H. A. 1, 2; F.B.L.A. 3, 4; F.T.A. 3.
