TO MR. JL.O ) ' • — ' - V 0 O b History of Aycock High School There was going to be a new school building in the community of Cedar Grove. The children had been going to the Cedar Grove Academy. They all were anxious FOR THE NEW BUILDING TO BE COMPLETED, BECAUSE IT WAS TO BE MUCH LARGER AND MORE MODERN THAN THE OLD ONE HAD BEEN. THE PUPILS HAD THOUGHT THEY WOULD GET TO START TO SCHOOL AT THE FIRST OF THE YEAR, BUT THE BUILDING WAS NOT COMPLETED; THEREFORE, THEY HAD TO CONTINUE IN THE ACADEMY. IN JANUARY 35 C AME THE THRILL OF A LIFETIME: THE NEW BUILDING WAS COMPLETED, AND THEY ALL MOVED IN. The school was named Aycock, after the great educa¬ tional governor, Charles B. Aycock. There were only 8 teachers and 8 rooms. Mr. C. D. Whitley was the principal. With long benches and a few double desks FOR THE PUPILS TO SIT ON, THEY STARTED OUT TO FINISH THEIR YEAR’S WORK. THERE WERE 44 ENROLLED IN HIGH SCHOOL AND IN THE ELEMENTARY GRADES. AT THE END OF THE YEAR, MR. WHITLEY RESIGNED. ALL THE PUPILS REGRETTED THAT HE WAS LEAVING THEM, NEVER¬ THELESS THEY LOOKED FORWARD TO SEEING THEIR NEW HEAD. The next year started out with a bang. Their new principal was Mr. Sheppard. During his two years as PRINCIPAL, THE SCHOOL INCREASED GREATLY IN ENROLL¬ MENT. During his first year, 1924 the P.T.A.was or¬ ganized AND HAS BEEN ACTIVE EVER SINCE. It HAS BEEN VERY INFLUENTIAL IN BUILDING UP THE SCHOOL AND ALSO IN BUYING THINGS WHICH THE SCHOOL NEEDS. After Mr. Sheppard left, Mrs. V. L. Warren became THE NEW PRINCIPAL AND REMAINED UNTIL THE SPRING OF 194 |, AT THE END OF WHICH SHE RESIGNED, MUCH TO THE SORROW OF HER MANY FRIENDS IN THE SCHOOL. During her 15 years as principal, the school was ALWAYS ACTIVE IN SPORTS. FORMERLY, WHEN THERE WERE GAMES, THE BOYS AND GIRLS BOTH PILED INTO THE SCHOOL BUS AND WERE ON THEIR WAY TO MEET THEIR OPPON¬ ENTS. They had to play out of doors, and all their GAMES WERE PLAYED N THE AFTERNOON. HOWEVER ALTHOUGH THEY OFTEN PLAYED LARGER SCHOOLS WHICH HAD GOOD GYMS, the Aycock boys and girls have piled up an enviable RECORD IN ATHLETICS, AND HAVE WON MANY TROPHIES. At first there was no REGULAR janitor, but some of the OLDER BOYS DID THE JANITORIAL WORK. LATER, WE GOT Uncle Tim, who is still with us. During the past years, the enrollment has great¬ ly INCREASED. Lou¬ ise and Claude Hopkins,Aron Wilson, and Estelle McCul¬ loch WERE NEW STUDENTS OF THE CLASS. IN THE FALL,CLARA Belle Anderson moved away. Just before Christmas, two big events took place. Kathleen and Gloria Wilson JOINED us; AND WE WENT TO SEE TREASURE ISLAND”, A STORY WHICH WE HAD JUST FlNISED READING. MEXT SPRING, MISS Hughes was sick for 5 weeks, but a good substi tute Mrs. Bragg, took her place. Just before school was out, we WENT ON A WEINER ROAST. iT BEGAN RAINING BEFORE WE GOT THERE, BUT NO ONE GOT VERY WET a In the ninth grade,we had Mr.Lathan as agriculture TEACHER, IN ADDITION TO THE SAME TEACHERS THAT WE HAD HAD THE YEAR BEFORE. WE HAD THE SAME STUDENTS,EXCEPT FOR A NEW MEMBER, I.J. WILSON. ABOUT CHRISTMAS, EDMUND COPPLE, WHO HAD BEEN GOING TO EFLAND FOR AROUND A YEAR CAME BACK TO JOIN THE GIRLS IN TAKING HISTORY, WHiLE THE OTHER BOYS TOOK AGRICULTURE. DURING THE WINTER THE DEEP SNOW DELAYED US FOR 2 WEEKS, BUT WE DIDN’T CARE. The next spring we went to V.F.W. Lake for our weiner ROAST AND FROM THERE TO BURLINGTON TO SEE THE SHOW. !t RAINED THAT NIGHT, AND ALMOST EVERYONE GOT WET TH ROUGH THE STORM COVER WHICH HAD BEEN PULLED OVER THE TRUCK. The following summer, Mildred Grinstead decided that she couldn’t stand us any longer; hencf she married. As Juniors, we had the same teachers except for Miss Ward, our home room teacher, who took Mrs.Belue’s place. In October,Kathleen and Gloria left us and moved to Greensboro. The night before they moved, we had a wei¬ ner roast and told them good-by. In order to make up MONEY FOR THE BANQUET, WE SPONSORED A POPULARITY CON- test. Peggy Pope was the prize-winner. After Christmas, Clara Belle came back. During the winter we had a few PARTIES AND DANCES AS ENTERTAINMENT. THAT 5PRING, JUST BEFORE WE GAVE THE SENIORS A BANQUET, WE GAVE A PLAY, called Aron Slick from Pumpkin Crick , which we think EVERYONE ENJOYED. THEN CAME THE BANQUET, IN MARCH. WE HAD A VERY PRETTY NIGHT FOR IT. LATER ON, WE WENT BACK to V.F.W. Lake for another weiner roast and went on to Burlington for the show. After school closed, another of our band-Clara Belle Anderson, joined the band of matrimony. This year, we have a new student, Jack Williams, for¬ merly of Fayetteville. However, we have lost a few mem¬ bers. Elizabeth White and Aron Wilson are working in Burlington. We have several new teachers, who are: Mrs Wall, our science teacherJMr. Muss,Agriculture teacher, Miss Cook, home economics teacher; Mr. Arrowood, who is principal. We still have Mr. Cude and Miss Hughes, two faithful teachers who have been with us a long time. On September 20, we attended the Lenoir-Rhywe foctsall game at Carolina, when all the North Carolina seniors WERE GUESTS OF THE UNIVERSITY. CM OCTOBER 2 ), WE WERE guests of State College. We are trying to live up to our motto, Faithful to the finish , and hope to be as happy in the future as WE HAVE BEEN IN THE PAST FOUR YEARS. Wait and see for yourself. Ruth Wells, that happy-go-lucky girl, has had ABOUT ENOUGH OF CAREER AND HAS DECIDED IT ' S THE BEST THING TO STICK TO YOUR MAN. Margaret Lynch has led a most successful life. At least, Billy and the children think so. Elaine Jobe has succeeded at last and is proud TO WALK BESIDE HER HEN-PECKED HUSBAND. Jack Finley has at last got a patent on his new type airplane. Gee, is he proudi Edmund Copple is settling down at last. We hope HIS BRIDE WILL BE PROUD OF HER FARMER HUSBAND. Annie Mae Lope is in love again, but it seems HARD FOR HER TO MAKE UP HER Ml NO. Fred Compton has kept his ball playing spirit AND HAS ACCEPTED A THREE YEAR CONTRACT TO COACH BASKET BALL AT CAROLINA THIS YEAR. I THINK HIS WIFE LIKES THIS SETTER THAN SHE DID ELON. Eulalia Ward seems to be quitting her job after so long a time. We wonder why. I suppose all OF THE NEWSPAPERS WILL TELL. Roy Clayton’s future is undecided, but i don’t THINK IT WILL BE THAT WAY LONG, AS HE WAS SEEN RECENTLY ESCORTING A GIRL TO CHURCH. ThAT IS GETTING CLOSE TO THE ALTAR, ISN’T IT? Mary Elizabeth Rogers has at last got that HOME SHE HAD DREAMED OF SO LONG.HER HUSBAND SEEMS TO BE QUITE A BRAG, ESPECIALLY ABOUT HIS Wl FE. Berneice Compton has been away .for some time NOW, BUT WE HEAR SHE BROUGHT HER MAN HOME FOR THE WEEK-END RECENTLY. Charlie Compton carried his bride-to-be to Ce¬ dar Grove last week-end. I hear she made quite A HIT WITH THE FAMILY. Louise Hopkins is about to marry an Aycock gra¬ duate. She seems proud to hang on to her same OLD PALS. Lulu Frances Compton has just had a wonderful home built. She is ready to quit teaching now. Dan Dixon’s new theatre draws the crowd. Every one considers him Carr’s most handsome million¬ aire. ■m m ' Mm wm ffiasaesaa£3B=a=it=eaeffi3S3 eiexc=ieieieffl= «ge5aei«=i « t ( r g r r rf ri:.i: FE HAVE MOVED DIDN’T LIKE TOWN 22 . We think he will prefer the latter. Alene Crabtree has had a promotion but she re¬ fused. t suppose you know the rest. Claude Hopkins seems to enjoy his work a great deal. We wonder if romance will never enter his life! Edith Clayton seems to be a wonderful secretary. At least. I suppose her boss thinks so-her hus¬ band, IN OTHER WORDS. Estelle McCulloch seems to be flying on air, but WHO WOULDN ' T, WITH A BIG CHURCH WEDDING ONLY 2 WEEKS OFF? Jack Williams seems to 8E a wonderful doctor. I HEAR HE HASN’T LOST A PATIENT YET.
