GIRLS BASKETBALL Standing — Eunice McDaniels, Helen Lawerence, Lois Ashby, Miss Stratton, Josephine Howerton, Mary Durham, Janice Wyatt. Kneeling — Mary Grimes, Beatrice Branch, Dolly Rumley, Barbara Pace, Virginia Eanes, Frances Holland. Coached by Miss Betty Lou Stratton, the girls’ team was not so fortunate as the boys, but for the first time in four years, they chalked up a victory for the team. Although the girls failed in winning any league games, they succeeded in showing good sportsmanship and friendliness toward their opponents. Dolly Rumley was chosen as one of the best forwards in the county, to be on the all-star team.

BOYS BASKETBALL Standing — Mr. Pilson, Frank Payne, Paul Moore, Ronald Mountcastle, Oliver Carter, Ralph Moore, Lynwood Riddle. Kneeling — Dennis Marlowe, Nelson Eanes, Ted Barrow, David Eanes, Clifton Clark. The beginning of the basketball season of ’50 brought many hopes and desires from our boys’ team as to the possibilities of winning the county championship. To bring about this accomplishment would be a hard task for the team because they had pretty stiff competition from the other schools in the county, but the experience and leader- ship of their coach, Mr. O. E. Pilson helped them achieve their goal. The trophy was awarded to the captain, Ted Barrow, on December 5, at the Fieldale Gymnasium by Mr. Fairbanks, principal of Spencer-Penn High School. Ted Barrow and David Eanes were fortunate in being chosen as outstanding players on the all-star team. Ted won a silver miniature basketball for being best offensive player in the county.

BASEBALL First row — David Eanes, Jimmy Robertson, Clifton Clark, Dennis Marlowe, Oliver Carter, Maynard Shelton. Second row — Larry Holly, Maxwell Kendall, Sonny Lees, James Burchell. Third row — Jimmy Wall, Frank Payne, R. A. Tavenner, Lynwood Riddle, Jimmy Martin. Although R. A. Tavenner’s baseball team was minus several of last year’s players and new inexperienced boys took the places of those graduated from the team, that did not keep them from trying their best to win. With two of the most reliable pitchers being gone, Mr. Tavenner found new talent to fill their places also. The members of the team with their playing ability and sportsmanship had a successful playing season.
